Daoism And Confucianism
Roles Under the Chinese Golden Age
The three main belief systems that shaped daily life in China under the Tang and the Song period:
Daoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. Each played an important role in Chinese culture.
Daoism, an indigenous religion philosophical tradition that has shaped Chinese life for more than
2,000 years. In the broadest sense, a Daoist attitude toward life can be seen in the accepting and
yielding, the joyful and carefree sides of the Chinese character. An attitude that balances the moral
and duty conscious. Stark and deliberate character ascribed to Confucianism. Additionally, Daoism is
characterized by a positive, active attitude toward the occult and the metaphysical, whereas the

Buddhism needed the help of the ruling emperor to prosper, or suffered under their objection.
Emperor Wuzong, a faithful Daoist who viewed Buddhism as a barbaric, foreign religion used by
those to evade tax and responsibility to the state. In 845, he burned 4,600 monasteries and 4,000
temples. Buddhist temples became havens of refuge during times of the problem; land gifted to
temples and monasteries allowed monks to flourish their crops, and often, remains neutral from
conflicts. Buddhism was also useful for political reasons: some emperors persecuted them in favor
of Daoism, some adopted Buddhism to appease the masses (in Yuan Dynasty), and some manipulated
Buddhist ideologies of peace and neutrality as the publication to overcome social
Eminent Domain
It is a well known fact that the government makes laws that benefit it, and sometimes to the
detriment of the average citizen. Take, for example, the tax laws. You would be hard pressed to
find a taxpayer who believes that paying taxes is fair. In fact most people would complain that they
pay taxes all year by having an amount held out from their check, only to owe additional monies
every April 15. This form of governmental taking is probably the most popular, but there are other
actions that result in a private citizen losing their property to a governmental agency. However not
every instance of a taking leaves the average citizen without a remedy, and in some instances not
every instance of taken results in the person having less than when... Show more content on

It is the area of what amount of payment is adequate that is most frequently contested in a
condemnation matter. In order to show that the amount offered adequately compensates the owner
it is usually necessary to look at comparable sales in the area and the current use of the land.
Looking at these factors is a good way to show for what type of use the land is most suited. If the
proposed use does not make the most of the possibilities, the amount of compensation offered may

Why Is Kahlil Gibran Essay
Kahlil Gibran was born in Lebanon which subjugated to Ottoman dominion. The people of Mount
Lebanon had struggled to gain independence from the Ottoman rule. The Mount Lebanon area was
a troubled region, due to foreign interferences. Since childhood he enjoyed solitude in the natural
surroundings of the cascading falls and the rugged cliffs, this had symbolic influence to his
paintings and writings. Due to his poverty, he did not receive any formal education or schooling,
only regular visits to a village priest and learnt the essentials of religion and the Bible, and Arabic
languages.
In the Arab world, Gibran is regarded as a poetic rebel. His family immigrated to the US when he
was twelve, but he returned to study in Lebanon three years ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Later in the twilight, he leaves to his homeland while Almitra still stood alone upon the sea wall till
the ship vanished into the mist.
Gibran s masterpiece The Prophet holds a unique place in the field of English literature. It cannot
be completely categorized as a literary text; rather it is a philosophical text. Gibran combined his
mysticism with the social reality hence showing us the path to the sublime. Gibran has translated
his life experiences into art emotion, with high literary value. His works are full of cosmic
wisdom, aesthetic value and mystical truth. The Prophet for Gibran is a dream close to his heart.
He had Lebanon in his mind when he wrote the book. It is quite likely that Gibran speaks of his
own nostalgia; his own desire to return to his
Americans Are Utterly Powerless, The Former Secretary Of...
In the article Americans Are Utterly Powerless, the former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich points
out that the lack of meaningful choices is deteriorating American citizens basic rights, forcing
them to be powerless in nearly all aspects. He argues that the fundamental goal of economy and
society are supposed to be benefiting citizens. Instead, the system nowadays focuses on making the
top more powerful. As a matter of fact, American citizens become hopeless for that they can
account on no authorities for help. This is a social problem existing in America. However, I do not
agree with him that Americans are cornered to the dead end. Even though the society and economy
changes to favor the wealthy, there are choices that Americans can make to divert the predicament
of powerless. Before I elaborate my positive perspectives, it is necessary to look at Reich s
viewpoints. Albeit his slight gloom attitude toward the growing sense of powerlessness among
citizens, I like how he expounds the arguments in a clear structure. He examines the powerless
characteristic through three fundamental roles of citizens as workers, consumers, and voters. But
again, there are emerging choices I would like to point out that can decelerate the powerlessness.
Reich first puts his attention on workers. He states that despite economic recoveries, unemployment
is the highest in thirty years. Even in this situation companies are lowering wages, changing full time
workers to part time workers or

The Effect of the Proper Integration of Educational Technology on the Study Skills of Primary and
Secondary Students
Technology is highly prevalent and accessible now more than ever, so much so that the present is
called the Age of Information by many. However, a significant portion of schools around the world
still rely on the old style lecture method, detract of the utilization of many modern technological
advancements. A citing of the National Center for Educational Statistics by Carver revealed that
97% of American classrooms had at least one computer at hand. However, a mere 40% of teachers
actually used their computers in class (110). This is especially notable because of the benefits that
schools and institutions could gain for their students should they implement the use of information
and communication technology specifically designed for education in classrooms. Students study
skills in reading, math, and science have been shown to significantly improve due to the proper
integration of educational technology in primary and secondary schools.
According to Oxford University s online dictionary, study skills are strategies, usually learned, to
help in one s education. These are a highly diverse set of skills that include reading, critical thinking,
and research among others.
Educational technology is the application of technology in order to aid learning and academic
The Passion Of Joan Of Arc And Sweet Smell Of Success By...
Silent films ushered in the era of moving pictures and paved the way to modern cinema. Films
such as The Passion of Joan of Arc and Sweet Smell of Success represent the early and later stages
of this time period that was dominated by silent films. Within these films, two actors stand out for
their performances and there own unique traits they utilize to make the character they are
representing their own. Renée Jeanne Falconetti and Burt Lancaster both are superb leading actors
that, through their own methods, make these characters come alive. Regardless of these
performances though, there are both similarities and differences that they portray in their movies.
These films were shot with cameras that lacked a multitude of settings and this led to a very
theater esque method of filming. Many of these silent films were shot with non moving cameras,
obviously no sound, and also less effects. [BRING UP READING IN REGARDS TO INTRO TO
FILMS] This lack of supplemental technology forced these actors to up their game so to speak and
really carry the filmthemselves, rather than saturate the screen with fancy effects that so many
modern movies revolve around. This forced the director to focus on the facial expressions of the
cast in order to display both tone and intent during every scene. Live music sometimes accompanied
these films in order to help set these moods so the actorcould focus on character development and
expression. The first character to be discussed is
Symbolism In Sweat By Zora Neale Hurston
In the story Sweat by Zora Neale Hurston she talks about a lady that is independent. This lady s
name is Delia. She is married to Sykes who does abuse her and has a mistress named Bertha who
he is trying to get her into Delia s house. Delia is the one that does all the hard work while Sykes
just sits at home. The symbols in this story help get the theme across which are domestic violence
and empowerment. The three main symbols in this story each stand for a theme which is the
snake portraying domestic violence, the Chinaberry tree and the title Sweat both portray
empowerment. The snake in the story symbolizes evil which portrays domestic violence. Sykes
tried getting rid of Delia so he could go and be with Bertha, his mistress. He knew how afraid Delia
was of snakes so he decided to bring one home. Then, moved by both horror and terror, she sprang
back toward the door. There lay the snake in the basket! (Hurston 8). He really wanted the snake
to bite Delia so he could get rid of her. Leaving the snake in the basket where he knew was the
easiest place for it to bite her. Sykes knew that the snake would bite her. He was pure evil. The snake
however did not bite Delia but it bit Sykes. He crept an inch or two toward... Show more content on

The Chinaberry tree represents nature and its reproduction. A woman is meant to reproduce to keep
the family going. She could scarcely reach the Chinaberry tree, where she waited in the growing
heat while inside she knew the cold river was creeping up and up to extinguish that eye which must
know by now that she knew (Hurston 9). As Delia sits on top of the tree while Sykes is in his last
moments it shows the victory she has gotten. She has now gotten rid of him and is now starting a
new beginning on her own without a man. She sat there without any movement because she was the
one that brought home everything to keep herself and her husband

Darkness By Eileen Chang Quotes
Traditionally, a lack of light gives readers a impression of death, while light is used to illuminate
life and gives off a sense of happiness. However, in Eileen Chang s fiction light and darkness are
emphasized to elicit different feelings. For instance, light can be used to illuminate desolation or
obstacles that characters are hesitant to face. Meanwhile darkness can serve as an ominous precursor
for calamities that have not yet unfolded. Most importantly darkness and lightserve as critical links to
major themes in Eileen Chang s fiction.
One particular illustration of Eileen Chang s usage of light and darkness was the way she used it to
focus on the desolation that the main protagonist s faced, alerting readers to pay particular ... Show

It was dark inside the closet, and the lilac scent made her dizzy. In that closet there was no bright,
clear morning like the one outside the window, with its flat green grass, mute frightened face, and
peanut skins at the corner of the mouth... all that dirty, complicated, unreasonable reality (33). This
passage offers a juxtaposition between light and darkness. Although there is no light inside the
closet Weilong prefers the darkness to the contrasting bright light of the outside. The bright light
outside does not elicit pleasant feelings, but instead reveals all of the dreadful, rotten things in
Weilong s life. Weilong loathes her reality so much that she actually goes into the darkness to hide
from the light, correlating with Eileen Chang s central theme of desolation. The portrayal of light
and darkness links to a major theme of desolation in Chang s fiction. In both Jasmine Tea and
Aloeswood Incense, the protagonist s live in a world full of misery and loneliness while trying to
discover who they are and what they desire. Eileen Chang s fiction was written with the intention to
convey the simplicity of life, and portray the lives of relatable ordinary characters. Without a doubt
Eileen Chang used darkness and light to highlight desolation, but above all she used darkness to
illuminate what was not present in the protagonsit s lives; namely love and human

One example of upfront clashing is Sam and Mr. Beach at odds during the argument involving Sam
and Father. In the beginning of the book the difference between Father and Sam is very evident.
He is a boy of sixteen that is arguing his opinion that contradicts his father s. The argument of war
isn t just between families, it is also between generations. In chapter one, Mr. Beach, the town s
Anglican minister, also has his opinion on war that discriminates the new generation, I think men
of common sense will prevail. Nobody wants rebellion except fools and hotheads. (Collier and
Collier, 6). Sam goes on to argue with Mr. Beach, That s not what they say in New Haven, sir.
They say that the whole colony of Massachusetts is ready to fight and if Massachusetts fights,
Connecticut will fight too. (Collier and Collier, 6). Through Mr. Beach s character at this point
in the novel, he is seen as a representative of Redding s society and Anglican church. In chapter
two,Tim says by law everyone had to go to church so his sermons would impact the people of
Redding. For example, the night after Sam ran to Tom Warrup s hut, Mr. Beach made it his
subject of sermon. Nobody was going to let me forget it, that was for sure. Mr. Beach made it the
subject of his sermon. (Collier and Collier, 28). Furthermore, Sam arguing his point represents the
younger generation of college boys with college boy wind and Mr. Beach represents the more older
