Essay On Italian Americans
Italian Americans have been crucial in founding and developing American educational institutions.
Mother Frances Cabrini, the first American saint, who founded fourteen American colleges, ninety
eight schools, twenty eight orphanages, eight hospitals, three training schools and a score of other
institutions with the help of over 4,000 sisters she recruited for the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred
Heart. Italian Americans also founded two of the oldest colleges and universities in the United
States. The University of Santa Clara in California was founded by two Italian Jesuits, John Nobili
and A. Accolti; and Gonzaga University in Washington State was founded by a Jesuit priest, Joseph
Cataldo. Italian immigrants were ambivalent toward the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Father Giuseppe Rosati, who was consecrated a bishop in 1824, was given charge of the New
Orleans diocese, which at that time included Arkansas, Missouri and Illinois to the Rocky
Mountains. The Jesuits founded the St. Louis University in 1829 and, in the same year, Rosati
helped establish St. Louis Hospital, the first of its kind. He transformed a diocese with a few log
chapels into one with a cathedral, seventy eight churches and sixty missions. Public education in
St. Louis was of paramount importance at that time, because many of these societal gains were
stymied by the problems of slavery and discrimination. Missouri was admitted to the United States
as a slave state in 1821, but during the 1850s, there were about 3,200 free blacks and slaves
working as domestic servants, crewmen on the riverboats and laborers at the wharves. The Know
Nothing movement made every effort between 1830 to 1860 to halt the spread of Catholicism and
Catholic education. They spread vicious anti Catholic propaganda. Dr. Charles Constantine Pise, an
ordained priest, wrote one of the first books about Catholicism in America. His History of the
Catholic Church was praised by Pope Gregory XVI. This and Pise s many other works squelched
the lies and accusations of the Know Nothing propaganda. Henry Clay had Pise appointed a chaplain

The Sparks Heritage Museum Is An Important Architectural
The Sparks Heritage Museum is an important architectural facet of the Sparks area. The building
was built in 1931, by Rousch Belz Contractors, and designed by Frederic J. DeLongchamps to
serve as the Sparks branch of the Washoe County Library. The building served as the first public
library in area and is located at 814 Victorian Ave, Sparks, NV (all PDF). The buildingwas placed on
the Nation Register of Historic Places in 1984 (Website) and displays influences from the
Mediterranean Revival style of architecture, being one of two buildings in Sparks (the other being
the Immaculate Conception Church) created in that style (PDF).

The windows on the front and sides of the building differ from those in back. The similarities
among all of the windows is that they feature glass panes separated by muntins, have sills, and are
without lintels. The windows on the front side of the building have a hinged lower section,
feature twelve panes of glass, and the windows have security bars on the basement floor. The
windows on the back are slim, with fourteen panes of glass each. Characteristics that the building
share with the Mediterranean revival style are its semicircular arched entry, red tiled roof, wrought
iron balustrades on its twinned, L shaped staircases that lead to the first floor, and small paned
windows.(PDF) The building features a central, gabled pavilion and the roman arching that frames
the double door main entrance features a protruding keystone, and is flanked on both sides by
original light fixtures(PDF). Above the front entrance to the first floor of the building is a half
circle window with five panes of clear glass framed in wood. Two unique stones can be found on the
building; one on the northeast corner noting the building as the Sparks Branch Washoe County
Library , and the other on the southeastern corner baring the image of a Freemason square and
compass.
While much of the building s exterior is original, there are some changes that have occurred both
inside and outside of over time. The door for the front entrance
Importance Of Children In A Small Town
A small town, a place where everyone knows everyone. Raising a child in a small town can be
beneficial because of the environmental setting. Freedom in a small town is likely to come
because parents are not too concerned of their child s whereabouts. Getting out of the house and
being adventurous exposes children to nature and portrays a better view of life. Being skillful is a
great trait because it helps children be able to make do with what him/her may have.
Children should be reared in a small town rather than a large city because of its positive factors.
Freedom in a small town is given to children because parents do not have to worry as much. If
children are raised in a city, parents are less likely to give their children freedom because he/she
will be exposed to so much. As Rebecca Ley states, I can t imagine ever letting my children out of
the front door to roam /freely like I did. Not when I ve witnessed a man selling drugs at the end of
our road, and the crossing near the high street has a shrine of faded plastic flowers (3). Ley is
saying that if she lets her children roam around the city, then it may affect the way she is raising
them. As Rebecca Ley states, I worry that they will lose their innocence far too early, becoming
streetwise teenagers who roll their eyes and melt into the city to get up to no good (3). Rebecca
Ley says she is afraid that her children will become corrupted teenagers because of what the children
are exposed to. As Rebecca Ley

Let me introduce Bandara. Bandara has been working as the number two in a medium sized
organization for ten years. It has always been intimated that when Jeremy his boss retires or leaves,
Bandara will slip into the number one position and lead the organization. Barry has always had some
clear ideas on how he is going to take the organization forward when Jeremy is not there; ideas that
have not been taken up in the past.

Life being perverse, it had been decided to advertise the job externally and guess what? A better
candidate came up who has now been in post for three weeks. Bandera s new boss is a great guy,
very friendly and supportive . . . but, he is not Barry. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Counsellor: Bandara, if I were in your position, what would you advise me to do?

Well done again counsellor. Getting an objective view on this.

Bandara: Well that is simple. Think through the ideas you have always had, refine them and get
them out of your head and onto paper (or a Word document). Not too long. Do not spend too much
time on it and keep it very brief an overview. Arrange to see the new number one, preferably off site
at a neutral venue, and tell him that you have always had these ideas but never shared then and you
would now like to share them and if anything was that good, maybe the organization can adopt them.

You will either get an acceptance, in which case you will achieve what you have always wanted or
you will have a debate as to what can or cannot be adopted and you will have at least cleared the air
for yourself.
Counsellor: So Bandara what are you going to do?

Bandara: Crafty you have got me to resolve my own dilemma. Clearly, I shall take my own advice
and do just what I have recommended.

Thanks sir. I have gone from tragic to magic as Walt Disney would say and it s all down to you.
Thanks.

Not crafty, just a great counselling session. The counsellor was faced with what appeared to be a
somewhat intractable problem which was solved by some excellent
Operant Conditioning Methods And Research
Introduction
In the article, Operant Conditioning Methods Applied to Research in Chronic Schizophrenia, a study
is described where experimenters used operant conditioning methods to analyze the behavior of non
verbal, lowly motivated, chronic psychotic patients. (Lindsley 118 119) Before this study can be
understood, a brief description of operant conditioning is necessary.
Operant conditioning was a method developed by B.F. Skinner in 1938. (121) Prior to this year,
Skinner became very interested in analyzing the behavior of laboratory animals. He put the
animal(s) in a small enclosure, free to do whatever they wanted. Within the small enclosure, there
was a device, such as a light switch, that the animal could operate by turning it on and off. Every
time the animal turned the light switch on or off, an item that would reinforce the behavior of
turning the light switch on or off, such as a piece of food, would become available to the animal.
Skinner believed that by providing a reinforcing item to the animal every time it displayed the
desired behavior of turning the light switch on an off, the animal would continuously display the
target behavior.

Research Questions
Since 1938, operant conditioning has been used extensively by many different professionals to
control many different types of behavior. In the study in this article, experimenters posed the
question, How would individuals with schizophrenia behave in an enclosed space with nothing but a
stimulus
Persuasive Essay On The Pledge Of Allegiance
As a daily routine many schools have their students start by standing up, facing the American flag,
and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. This is something that most students have memorized since
kindergarten and in some cases even preschool. The students recite the pledge every morning and
most of them don t know what it means or aren t really sure why they have to say it. If students don
t know what the purpose or the history behind something is, they generally don t take the matter
seriously, which with The Pledge being a serious matter, students need to know the history in order
to show respect. The Pledge of Allegianceshould be said every morning by students at schools in
the USA and they should be aware of its meaning. There have been several versions of The Pledge
and the one that we currently recite today was revised back in 1954 when president Eisenhower
reacted to the communist threat. The original version was written by Francis Bellamyin 1892, who
had hoped that countries around the world would recreate their own versions. Now, in most states
reciting The Pledge at school is a state law. The Pledge consist of students standing up, facing the
American flag, placing their right hand over their heart, and saying the words I pledge allegiance to
the Flag of the United Statesof America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under
God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. In other places when The Pledge is being recited its

Pollution And Photochemical Smog In New York City
1. What is the difference between the type of smog experienced by cities in the eastern United
States and that found in Southern California? early people burned wood for heat and cooking fires
in enclosed spaces such as caves and small tents or houses. And Photochemical smog is the
abundance of cars and sunshine that provided the perfect setting for a chemical reaction between
some of the molecules in auto exhaust or oil refinery emissions. 2. London has suffered from terrible
air pollutionfor at least seven centuries. Why is the city so prone to its famous London fog? What
did London do to get rid of its air pollution? Because of The terrible events in Pennsylvania and
London, plus the recognition of the hazards of photochemical smog. They did the Clean Air Act in
1970 in the United States. The act now regulates 189 pollutants. 3.... Show more content on

What might be a reason why the city of San Francisco and its metropolitan area is not on the list of
smoggiest cities for 2012? Maybe because they reduce somehow their pollution during that period. 5.
Why are naturally occurring substances, such as particulates or carbon dioxide, sometimes
considered pollutants? Because they are being used by humans such as volcanic ash. Dust is natural
but exacerbated by human activities.

6. How does ozone form from vehicle exhaust? It is created by a chemical reaction that takes
place in exhaust and in the presence of sunlight. 7. What are the necessary ingredients for ozone
creation, excluding those that are readily available in the atmosphere? Why could there be a city
with a lot of cars but relatively little ozone pollution? Cars, Trucks, PM, HC, NOx, CO, and SO2.
Depending on what climate is in that city the ozone pollution would be high or low. 8. Some
people say that we need to phase out fossil fuel use and replace it with clean energy. Why is fossil
fuel use becoming undesirable? fossil fuels do not burn completely and the incomplete chemical
reactions produce
Jean King Persuasive Speech
Reigning NBA champions, the Golden State Warriors, refused to attend the customary tradition of
visiting the White House after their championship victory. To make a statement, the team took young
kids to an African American history museum; this decision made in hope to inspire the public that
sports and athletes can impact change. Recurring issues involving racial profiling, discrimination,
and police brutality, have fueled a historical timeline with professional athletes protesting social
oppression. The position of fame held by an athlete intensifies the athlete s performance, words, or
actions, drawing a wide range of the world s attention. The athlete s voice, when amplified onto a

Harry Edwards, a sociology instructor at San Jose State University, put together a program called
the Olympic Project for Human Rights in order to oppose racism in sports. The initial plan of the
program was to assemble a group of athletes to boycott the games, but this plan failed. Instead,
athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos, both actively involved with Harry Edwards s
movement, decided to protest, in some form, if they reached the victory platform. Sure enough,
in the 200 meter sprint of the Mexico City Olympics, Tommie Smith took first place and John
Carlos took third. On the day of the award ceremony, both men wore black socks and no shoes to
symbolize African American poverty, and each wore a black glove to symbolize African American
unity. During the national anthem, Smith and Carlos bowed their heads and raised a fist in the air,
gaining worldwide attention. Smith later explained their protest as a cry for freedom and for
human rights. We had to be seen because we couldn t be heard (Davis 2). Winning the gold and
bronze medals provided Smith and Carlos with a platform to make their silent statement, embodying
the vision of the Civil Rights Movement altogether. The Olympic setting produced a much larger
audience for this protest, challenging prior Olympic ideals in which sports and politics were not
intended to be
The Story Of Electricity Is Told By Al Khalili Essay
The Story of Electricity is told by Al Khalili, a British theoretical physicist, and begins the three part
TV program with the Spark or dawn of human knowledge of electricity, showcasing the simple and
primitive experiments. Leading next, the second part of the program goes over 18th and 19th
centuries and how many scientists and physicists harnessed the power of electricityand magnetism
and created practical devices and how these devices complete transformed the way people lived
and continues to do so today. In the third episode, Khalili finishes up the story with how what we
applied what we have learned in the past 200 years to connect the world with electricity via
networks and broadcasting. He explains that our era is defined by electricity, and how our
understanding of electricity is proportional to our reliance upon it. The first episode starts us off
with Isaac Newton and Francis Hauksbee in the Royal Society and the experiments they created.
One of the first experiments regarding electricity involved a spinning glass hollow sphere vacuum.
In a dark room, as the glass span, Hauksbee placed his hand very near the surface without touching
it, and light emitted from inside the glass. This experiment was groundbreaking since it was the first
time mankind had seemingly created a power reserved to the All Mighty. Even though this discovery
was groundbreaking, its practicality was nearly nil. Conjurors and street magicians called themselves
electricians and
