Calamitatum Of The Individual Essay example
In the realm of critical thinking, Abelard undoubtedly ranked highly in his day. He was an expert
dialectician, philosopher and theologian, and as a result led a movement towards individual
thinking. He traveled a lonely path of individuality, and when his ideas were suppressed, he found
different ways to express his individuality. The beginning of his life was marked by extreme personal
freedom. As his journey through life continued, he found himself compounded with innumerable
restrictions.

The role of monk could not change Abelard, and his individuality brought him even greater
misfortune. He may forewarn others against the risks of such extreme individualism, but his life
clearly shows that Abelard thought his individuality was a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

As he tells us, the whole world at his feet. In the Story of My Calamities, he confesses that at that
period of his life he was filled with vanity and pride. quot;I began to think myself the only
philosopher in the world, with nothing to fear from anyone, and so I yielded to the lusts of the
flesh. quot; (p.65, ll.13 15). The first part of this statement is a window into what made Abelard an
individual. He felt that he did not have to follow the same rules that other people did because he
was superior to them. The result was a man that did things differently, for better or for worse.

The second part of that statement lead Abelard down his next path of individuality, the first to
cause him physical pain. To these faults he attributes his downfall, which was as swift and tragic
as was everything, seemingly, in his dazzling career. He tells us in graphic language the tale of how
he fell in love with Heloise, niece of Canon Fulbert. In the midst of his exploits he met Heloise, and
in the first time writing about her in The Story of My Calamities he describes her individuality.
quot;...in the extent of her learning she stood supreme.

A gift for letters is so rare in women that it added greatly to her charm and had won her renown
throughout the realm. quot; (p.66 ll.15 17). This shows that Abelard valued individuality highly in
others as well as in himself. He arranged an agreement with
Prisoner s Dilemma Essay
1). The Prisoner s Dilemma
The Prisoner s Dilemma is an extremely popular game and way of thinking about social
interactions and also economics. It judges how people work together and against each other. It helps
us understand what governs the balance between cooperation and competition in business, in
politics, and in social settings. The two players in the game can choose between two moves, either
cooperate or defect . The idea is that each player gains when both cooperate, but if only one of them
cooperates, the other one, who defects, will gain more. If both defect, both lose. The whole game
situation and its different outcomes can be summarised with the example provided below,

This is none so more apparent than in the United States where a strange phenomenon is beginning to
develop as a direct consequence of the rapid pace of technological advancement, this phenomenon is
going bowling alone. This has been highlighted because at its core bowling is an extremely
sociable event and it was fun thing to do with friends and peer groups prior to technology
exploding at an unprecedented rate. Nowadays people find the ease of staying at home to watch
television or movies or play videogames much more appealing than going out to the bowling
alley with their friends for a game of bowling. You would think in today s modern and constantly
connected world that it would be easier than ever to organise your group of friends to go for a
game of bowling, but that isn t the case. Despite being constantly connected to the world,
organising a large group event is quite difficult because people tend to ignore their devices as
some sort of respite, to clear their minds from the stresses of the modern day and to get some peace
and quiet. Unlike, say 20 years ago, when you would tell your friends where to go and at what time
they were to go there at before a large group

We gain many insights from the use of first person in Cathedral such as, the narrator s opinions of
blind people, the change of heart of the narrator, and how the narrator felt after his sudden
realization. An example of his biased opinion of blind people includes when he said, In the
movies, the blind moved slowly and never laughed (32). These types of broad generalizations at
the start help to show his attitude leading up to his change of heart towards blind people. Through
the use of first person narration (175) and dynamic character (220), we get to see the narrator
change his opinion over time. For example, the narrator said, it was like nothing else in my life up
to now (42). This marked when the narrator started to become dynamic
Isaac Sherrill Biography
One day a miracle happened, I, Isaac Sherrill, was born! I was born on March 9, 2003. A long time
ago, I know. I thought I would write an autobiography so I could tell people about myself, but also
to entertain a little.
I was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana and I was the first child of my family. When I was one we
moved to Arizona for a year. Then when we moved back to Indiana my sister was born, and now I
have three brothers and three sisters. My life has taken taken some twists and turns and now I live
in Grand Rapids, Michigan as a manager of agents for artists, performers and athletes.
When I was two we moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa where my dad took a job as a pastor. When I
was going to preschool one of my friends was Jonah ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I got a lot of recognition working there because people knew who I was from playing basketball. I
made about $15,000 working out there which fortunately was enough to get by. My college
experience was amazing and I m thankful for my time there.
I was seen as a smart, young, athletic coming out of college and with some convincing I got a
position managing agents of athletes, performers, and artists. I made $120,000 with that job
which was great especially because this was my first big job. Through the years I have been working
my way up the ranks. I hope that one day I will be able to do something big like being the CEO of
Nike or something like that as I said earlier.
I live in Grand Rapids, MI because I have always loved the city, but most of all, all the opportunities
it offers for me and my family. I bought a very nice house straight off after college which I reside in
to this day. I also drive a nice Range Rover Evoque which had been my dream car since I was a little
boy. But I most enjoy having season tickets to the MSU basketball season, the very college I
graduated from. Looking back on my life I thank God for everything he has blessed me with. In
the future I hope to be able to impact people s lives in a big way such as possibly opening a hospital
or something like that (obviously that s a ways down the road). But in the meantime I ll be out here
in Grand Rapids, MI devoting my life to God
Effects Of Media Violence On Society
Effects of Media on Society
Media violence has numerous negative consequences on youth today to commit criminal acts in the
society.
Violence in the media will never be stopped as long as the society spends more time on violent
movies and video games.
Media violence has been tremendously growing and attaining the hazardous extents. Around 60 % of
TV shows contain some kind of violence. Most self involving video games contain some violent
matter in it. For example, if you manufacture guns, you do not need to give any advertisement,
because it is done by the amusement industry. Aggressive behavior, desensitization to violence,
hallucinations, and fear of being mishandled were caused by the media violence, was explained in
a 2009 Policy Statement on Media Violence, by the American Academy of Pediatrics (Arline,
2012). The increase in aggressive behavior happens by watching violent video shows on TV, and by
playing violent video games.
The researchers found that boys and girls who played a lot of violent video games changed over
the school year. Media violence is not probable to convert a child into a violent criminal. But,
someday by just smoking a cigarette can increase the likelihood of a lung cancer. Likewise, a
violent show can increase the likelihood of behaving in an aggressive way (Bushman and
Huesmann, p. 248). There are many reasons to be worried about the level of violence in the society,
it is clearly simplistic and confusing to hold that the major cause of criminal

the situation and future prospects in the Jamestown, Plymouth and Dutch settlement areas.

Tribal leadership changed in 1622 23. Indian attacks killed over 700 colonists and destroyed crops
and supplies in what was called the Jamestown Massacre ( The Colonies: Jamestown ). Hunger
remains a major hardship. Salt water poisoned colonists. A drought and massive fire destroyed
crops and killed all but 60 colonists (Captain John Smith qtd. in Miller, 84 85). Gross
mismanagement has failed to improve living conditions (Kelly). 1609 was labeled the starving
time. Only native plants and a few fish sustained the settlers. Desperate colonists cannibalized
buried Indians and even family members (Captain John Smith qtd. in Miller, 85). Tobacco
became the colony s sole cash crop and main source of revenue by 1612 with exports to England
increasing from 2,300 pounds in 1616 to over 49,000 pounds by 1618. Importation of slaves to
work in the fields began in 1619 ( The Colonies: Jamestown ). Settlers remain in Jamestown

the unoccupied site offers wide views of the area; and residents can try to find gold deposits and the

Is Lying Ever Justified Essay
Is Lying justified or never justified? Lying is an everyday social factor and a moral duty when the
time comes. Lying is sometimes justified when it is used to protect someone from harm or to protect
someone s feelings; but on the other hand, others think lying is always justified. Most think lying is
sometimes ok to protect someone from harm. In It s the Truth:Americans Conflicted About Lying,
the article states, Not only is lying justified it s sometimes a moral duty, (NBC News). This shows
that lying is a part of every day life. In addition, it states that it is a duty. This shows that it is a duty
to protect someone from harm. Also, the article states, For Harold smith, it was worth the risk when
he lied to his daughter about his health when undergoing treatment for a kidney treatment. Why get

In the article, Rejecting All Lies: Immanuel Kant, by Sissela Bok, Bok reports, Truthfulness in
statements which cannot be avoided is the formal duty if an individual to everyone, (Bok). This
statement is disagreeing with NBC News statement when stating that lying is a moral duty. It also
states that the truth will always come first which could be argued with. Kant also states This is an
absolutist position, prohibiting all lies, even those told for the best of purposes or to avoid the most
horrible of fate, (Kant). Kant states that even if lying to protect someone is needed, to not try and lie
to protect someone. This also shows that Kant disagrees with all lies even if it protects someone or
something from harm. Therefore, some think lying is never justified. Lying is sometimes justified
when it is used to protect someone from harm or to protect someone s feelings; but on the other
hand others think lying is always justified. Lying is apart of everyday life. It s better to protect
someone with a lie then letting them get hurt in the long

BOOK SUMMARY: ANCIENT NEAR EASTERN THOUGHT AND THE

Old Testament Introduction OBST 510

Part 1 Comparative Studies

Chapter 1: History and Methods
History: Walton begins the chapter with the rediscovery of Egypt which began in the eighteenth
century AD and of Mesopotamia in the mid nineteenth century AD. There were discoveries of tens of
thousands of texts that were excavated, translated and studied. Many of these tablets and texts did
coincide with the Bible. Walton outlines comparative study which is the study that attempts to
understand things when compared to their broader cultural context. The goal in this case is to
understand the Old Testament compared to the ANE. There have ... Show more content on

If other beliefs of the ANE were based on Myth, and Hebrew belief was radically different, then
Oswalt questions how we include the Bible as a myth. The real question is how to define myth?
The Problem of Definition: In this chapter Oswalt discusses the many accepted definitions of a
myth. He combines the similarities of all the definitions to establish what is consistent in order
determine a true definition of myth. There must be consistency in the definition for it to be accepted.
Oswalt shows that if the definition is too broad it loses validity. E.g. Automobiles are moving
objects with wheels. If this is true, is a wheel barrel than considered an automobile? Oswalt further
explains that the nature of the definition must describe and not evaluate the credibility of the
meaning. Broadening or judging the definition to answer the unexplained does not answer the
question or define if the Bible is a myth.
Historical Philosophical, Etymological, Sociological, Literary, and Phenomenological: There are
many approaches to describing what a myth is and Oswalt reviews each accepted theological
definition. They all have differences and similarities in how they define what a myth is. Oswalt
believes in order to really define a myth we must narrow the definition and not use speculation or
opinion to get a true definition.
The Centrality of Continuity: In summary all the descriptive definitions and approaches to define a
myth lead to one
Dream In The American Dream
The American Dream, has stereotypically branded a permanent mental image of a successful and
stunning married couple standing in front of their perfect white picket fence, 1.5 children, and in the
back ground is their classic, cookie cutter, utopian house. However, this idea has wrongly become
the standard model to living a successful life. This American Dreamnow excludes a large, diverse
group of people; the poor and the immigrants who have given everything to migrate and relocate
only to have their dreams become farther away from reality. This harsh, and rather unrealistic,
utopian mental picture does not accurately show the dreams of all people, and is only merely a dream
society has portrayed. Millennials especially, have taken note and are reacting with very different
mindsets than the generations that have come before them. The millennials desire more and are
attempting to make a change. Sometimes the simplest things are the hardest to understand. Dreams
have strange concepts that some people do not fully comprehend, especially ones that seem out of
range. However, fantasy is an essential component in surviving. Dreams and goals differ, yet are
constantly mixed up, confused and misused. The terms are unique in their own ways, have very
distinct aspects but somehow still become intertwined. People s modern goals typically include
graduating school, getting a degree, obtaining a job and becoming successful enough to have a
decent paycheck that supports all the basic

One of the most controversial and polemic trials of all times since the OJ Simpson trial was the
case of Casey Anthony and the murder of her two year old daughter. All the evidences and witness

found not guilty of this murder due to several different aspects. This paper will inform and provide

Also the whole nanny situation was a lie, after detectives went to the apartment complex where
supposable Zenaida Fernandez lived records showed that no one by that name had ever been a
resident there. The next lie discovered was Casey s employment, she was actually unemployed
and not working at Universal studios like she stated. Records show that she worked there years
back but was fired. Detectives saw no ambition in Casey trying to find her daughter, Casey was a
liar and never did she show any type of emotions of suffering while talking to the detectives. The
biggest concern to police was Why Caylee was reported missing until a month after she was last
seen?
Weeks before the call, the vehicle Casey had been driving was found abandoned. The tow truck
driver who found the vehicle told officers that the vehicle had a smell as if something had been
decomposing. The tow truck driver compared the smell to a similar situation where he found an
abandoned truck with a dead man s body laying inside. Along with the horrible smell inside the
vehicle; hair and a black plastic bag were found in the trunk of the car. Also found was what it
seemed to be blood. On July 16 Casey Anthony was charged with first degree murder, child neglect,
aggravated child abuse and four counts of lying to detectives. On December 11, 2008 Caylee s body
was found wrapped inside a plastic bag, her body was decomposed and her skull only
Profound, Poetic Rock and Roll by Bob Dylan
While it is widely rumored that many of Bob Dylan s songs were written while he was under the
influence of various drugs, I m not so sure that those rumors are accurate. Following a 1991
interview conducted by Paul Zollo with Bob Dylan, Zollo stated that There s an unmistakable
elegance in Dylan s words, an almost biblical beauty and that Dylan s answers give you a lot to
think about while not necessarily revealing much about the man . (Zollo 2) The same can be said
with regard to many of the lyrics of Dylan s songs. The lyrics to Mr. Tambourine Man, for example,
are wildly descriptive and sometimes confusing and can leave a listener (or a reader) open to many
different interpretations, some more complex than others, with no real meaning ever being clearly
stated.

From the first chorus where the singer is speaking to a Tambourine Man telling him that he s not
sleepy and there is no place he s going to , but in the jingle jangle morning he ll come following
you (lines 1 4), there is confusion. Some guess that the Tambourine Man is a drug dealer, who
Dylan follows to get his fix. Others say that he is a musician who played the tambourine during a
music session with Dylan at one time. Some speculate that the Tambourine Man is a fictional
character who was created by Dylan after attending a Mardi Gras celebration, which, incidentally is
when the song is said to have been written.

While there are many lines in the song/poem that could easily be viewed
Psychoanalytical Analysis Of Tsotsi
The Effect of one s Past on their Future The film Tsotsi, directed by Gavin Hood, portrays how an
individual s childhood and experiences effect the individual s psychological development in his
struggle for redemption. The narrative centers on Tsotsi, whose name when translated, literally
means thug a nickname he has accumulated through his atrocity as gang leader. The opening scene
of the film establishes a strong sense of direction for the story a glimpse of a person rolling dice is
shown, drawing attention to the archetype of the dice representing chance and having no control
over what will happen. This reveals the context that Tsotsi s life is more distinctly influenced by
outside forces, rather than his own free will.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, Hoods use of outside forces further develops Tsotsi s character. Furthermore, Tsotsi
steals a baby in his attempt to steal a car from Pumla. At this point, the critical question stands:
Can a small baby redeem a cold hearted thug? Clearly, the baby plays a major role in Tsotsi s
development as a dynamic character in his path to redemption. Tsotsi becomes occupied with
caring for the baby as his pathway out of his odious life. To implement a psychological association
to Tsotsi s repressed humanity, Hood uses sentimental flashbacks. Tsotsi s involvement with
gangs is explained by Tsotsi s harsh father who restricts him from seeing his ill mother. You...stay
away from your mother (Hood, 2005). The baby serves as a representation of what Tsotsi has lost;
revealed when he visits the baby s room, and realizes what he has stripped from the baby. As the
film progresses, Tsotsi develops a strong admiration towards Miriam, a female figure that he
associates with his own mother, and therefore tells Miriam that the baby s name is David, the
name he himself was given by his own mother. This is also revealed when Boston says, Everyone
has a name. A real name from him mother (Hood, 2005). Miriam reveals the Oedipal Complex at
work in the film as Tsotsi revives memories of his mother s affections. The decency, that Boston
continuously mentions, is finally revealed to be seen in Tsotsi when he finally hands the baby over
to its parents. However, his
The Pervasive Nature Of Clostridium Difficile And Its...
Checking in to the hospital comes with a heavy price tag, and sometimes you get more than what
you bargained for. As highly trained doctors, nurses, and staff make their way through the hospital,
they carry with them microbial agents of disease. Although regarded as centers for treatment and
prevention, hospitals are also known to harbor nosocomial, healthcare associated, bacterial
infections. These infections can be a result of overused or inappropriately used antibiotics and the
breaching of infection containment policies by patients and staff. Though health care associated
infections have been decreasing, one infection inciting nosocomial bacterial, Clostridium difficilehas
been rampant. It is important that inefficiencies in health care be met with stringent efforts for
prevention as they may lead to distressing financial, emotional, and medical repercussions.
Introduction New challenges from an established pathogen:
Ample literature has been published to elucidate the pervasive nature of Clostridium difficile and its
relationship with inadequate health care practices. Clostridium difficile associated disease: New
challenges from an established pathogen by Sunshine and McDonald, published in the Cleveland
Clinic Journal of Medicine discusses the concern over Clostridium difficile. It includes a case report
involving infection caused by the bacterium and important guidelines for prevention and treatment
associated with the bacterium.
