The Role of Washington County, Ohio in the Success of the Underground Railroad

Gone, gone, sold and gone

To the rice swamps dank and lone,
From Virginia s hills and waters,
Woe is me, my stolen daughters!
(Whittier in Hamilton, pg. 105)

Families torn apart, humans sold on auction blocks, using humans for animal labor. These tragedies
along with the words of the Quaker poet John Whiittier are just the beginning when trying to explain
the motivation for abolitionists helping to free slaves.

The Underground Railroad was a path to safety and freedom for thousands of slaves before the
Civil War. Escaping from the chains, confinement and abuse of slavery was no easy task and it took

The Underground Railroad was the path that slaves took while escaping. It consisted of stations or
depots (houses), conductors (those who lived in the homes), tracks ( the actual trail they took) and
even station masters and presidents who led the efforts in their area. The railroad analogy was used
to describe many aspects of this anti slavery activity. The code helped those involved in freeing the
slaves communicate with each other without others understanding.

Sources and Methods

The research in this paper will come from three basic sources. The first source is over the internet.
Using the key words Underground, Railroad and Ohio, articles and books will be found. The library
will be the second source. Again the key words, Underground, Railroad and Ohio will be used to
find and books and newspapers containing valuable information. A local specialist by the name of
Mr. Henry Burke will be the third source for this paper. He will provide newspaper articles and
stories that he discovered during his research. Interviews with him will also provide valuable insights
into the knowledge he has gained throughout his research.

Format of the Paper

The paper will begin with a Review of the Research. This section will summarize all the
information gathered for this paper. Here the background will be given and the foundation laid for
the rest of the report. Next will be the Application of the Research. This is
Obstacles In A Worn Path
The short story A Worn Path is about an elderly woman on a quest to a village far away from her
home in the country. Although the path is difficult and has many obstacles, the elderly lady
perseveres until she gets to her destination. The beginning paragraph sets the scene for the entire
story and introduces the readers to Phoenix Jackson. Phoenix is described as a very old and frail
woman that walks with a cane out in front of her, indicating poor vision. The story begins on a cold
morning in December on a path in the woods. The use of imagery foreshadows the difficult path that
Phoenix must take. The beginning paragraph also reiterates that Phoenix is ill but persistent by
comparing the tapping of her cane on the earth to the sound of... Show more content on

First, Phoenix mistook a thorn bush for a green leafy bush and ended up getting caught in it.
Phoenix sat down to rest and saw a boy handing her a marble cake. However, when she went to go
grab it, she realized that there was nothing there: She did not dare to close her eyes, and when a
little boy brought her a plate with a slice of marble cake on it she spoke to him. (Welty 465). She
continued walking until she reached a field of dead corn where she mistook a scarecrow for a
ghost: Who be you the ghost of? For I have heard of nary death close by. (Welty 465). Phoenix s
vision and hallucinations impact the story by providing more evidence of her bravery and just
how lonely she is. A phoenix is a mythical bird that would live for 500 years, be consumed by fire
and then rise from its own ashes. The name Phoenix is appropriate for the main character because
she is very old, wise, and strong. Phoenix has traveled the same worn path several times over the
years. She knows the many challenges she faces including nature, persecution from others, and her
health. Like the bird, Phoenix continues to rise every time she must travel to town to get the
medicine for her grandson. She is persistent and keeps going no matter what happens along the
Women s Clothing During The Tudor Period
In the National Portrait Gallery, a selection of portraits from the late 1400s through the early
1600s helps individuals to visualize the fashion style of those early periods, mainly the Tudors
and the Elizabethans. During my visit at the National Portrait Gallery, I noticed that a majority of
the men and women during the Tudor period wore a lot of dark colors. For example, in Henry VII
s portrait he was dressed in a black soft hat, a black and dark red tunic against the white fur lapel
of his gown. His golden surcoat was embroidered with red patterns, which stood out strongly in the
portrait. Henry VII was also wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece, which was bestowed upon
him by Maximilian I. This particular portrait was my favorite and... Show more content on

While the women s clothing gave them a triangular shaped appearance because they wore tight
fitting corsets, which made their waist very thin, but their petticoats and gown were very wide.
Catherine Parr s portrait perfectly fits the previous description of women s clothing during the
Tudor period. In her portrait, she was dressed in a silver gown that had a crimson tassels hanging
down to her ankles. The square neck of her dress was cut low in order to show the top of her
shoulders during the early Tudor period this was a common style amongst the women. Catherine
s crimson underskirt was embroidered with gold and pearls. Over the crimson underskirt was a
bright silver dress embroidered with flowery patterns. Her narrows elbows were covered by a
whitish gray fur oversleeve. Her narrow elbows were also covered by an oversized crimson
undersleeve and her narrow wrists were enclosed in white silk puffs. While analyzing this painting, I
began to wonder why the women during this period desperately wanted to have a thin waist at the
expense of their health. In particular, I enjoyed the color scheme of the portrait. The artist used a
dark blue background to help show the details of the dress, hence making the simplicity of Catherine
s clothing pop
Swot Analysis Of Mac Ride
1.0Introduction
In this capstone integrated project report, the project team explored the firm Ride More Innovations
Ltd. (RMI) and its first product, Mac Ride . Mac Ride is a unique, front mounted, child seat for
mountain bicycles. This report begins by analyzing the child bike seat industry. Subsequently, RMI s
current strategy, potential markets and competitors across various geographical locations are
investigated in detail. Based on this analysis, different strategies are analyzed before a final
recommendation is suggested. The report also includes an implementation guide for the
recommended strategy as well as a description of the finance required to execute the strategy and
expected results of the strategy execution.

Accordingly, the child can participate in the ride, stand on the stirrups, all while having fun and
learning about balance and speed. Additionally, parents benefit by having the opportunity to have a
real conversation with his/her child without distractions or having to continually look back. Mac
Ride facilitates a closer connection between parents and children in their bicycle riding experience.
Mac Ride seats are easy to set up and suitable for off road riding, and, therefore, support an active,
engaged experience for children. Once the Mac Ride seat is removed, the only thing left on the
bike is a small spacer ring which blends into the bicycle design and may go completely unnoticed.
Easy removal and installation also allows parents to exchange the Mac Ride child seat quickly so
parents may take turns exploring and sharing their bicycling adventure with their child.
There do exist conventional front mounted bicycle children s seats. However, they have limited
space and children quickly outgrow the plastic seats which are usually clunky, aesthetically
unpleasing, and difficult to maintain. However, Mac Ride has extendable legs and a movable seat,
allowing children to use the seat for a longer duration than other conventional front mounted seats.
Depending on the size of the bike and height of the rider, children as old as 6 can easily use and
have fun with Mac Ride.
Furthermore, other front mounted child carriers often force the
My Grandparents
As a child, I was raised in an uppity, wealthy family. I was the child of the family failure. My
Grandparents raised me. I was the child of the youngest and most enabled of the 11 kids my
grandparents had. My father was a meth addict and my mother was selfish who was more
concerned with her image and social life than her children. My grandmother loved me because
she had children one after the other. By the time she was a master parent, all of her children had
left the nest. With empty nest syndrome, she was all too happy to accept her name sake into her
life and raise a little girl that was did not include an army of screaming children on top of the
small infant she was handed. My grandmother never realized the amount of favoritism she
displayed caused me a terrible childhood by my relatives. I was abused verbally and physically
due to jealousy of her adult children and her other grandchildren just followed the example. My
father, due to his drug addiction was not respected or treated as a parent. He was not allowed an
opinion, at all. They began to make claims that were false, including an opinion I had mental health
issues. One of my uncles had adopted a son with his previous wife and had been raising him fine
until his divorce to my previous aunt due to his adultery with my current aunt. My aunt had 3
children from her previous marriage. When my uncle married my new aunt, they decided that they
were no longer interested in raising my adopted cousin and began to claim
Automobile Car Body Is Made From Other Grades Of Low Alloy...
1.0INTRODUCTION

Automobile car body is made from various grades of low alloy and low carbon steels that are
prone to corrosion in the absence of proper surface protection [1,2]. Therefore, car body is
traditionally coated with primer, followed by paint for better corrosion resistance. However, due to
process complication, design intricacy and other issues, it is often observed that despite of applying
several layers of primer and paint on the car body, it suffers from General, Pitting, and Crevice
corrosion. When such corrosion occurs within the warranty period, it usually costs the car
manufacturer significantly and more importantly, it results in bad customer experience. The success
of automobile industries depends on keeping the customer satisfied with quality of product and
services. Therefore, it is highly imperative that such problems are identified at an early stage and
find effective solutions to mitigate them efficiently.

Cold rolled steel sheets remained the most widely used car body material. However, to meet the
future energy efficiency requirement of automobiles, automobile industries will have to look for
optimum way in designing and usage of steel sheets. The standard TS 4011 summarizes the
additional requirement for cold rolled sheets for critical auto body components and outer panels. In
general, steel alloy must have high formability and high strength. In addition, car body material must
have good joining characteristics. It is a common observation
The Pedestrian Ray Bradbury Character Analysis
Has mankind managed to progress in a positive way? In The Pedestrian , Ray Bradbury shared his
opinion about the situation. Using characterization and imagery Bradbury shows that if the world
advances to the point where people lose all humanity then the world might as well not exist,
although his opinion may not be the opinion of all mankind it is logical and understood. Rays
opinion about the future and forces the reader to consider the possible reality of it.

The short story is a science fiction set in the future, 2053. The m main character, Leonard Mead is
a lonely writer who spends a good majority of his time taking long walks for pure enjoyment,
unlike the rest of the brain dead civilians who are only focused on materialistic things and
technology. As leonard is taking one of his leasurely walks, a robotic police officer forces him to
stop. In his society taking walks is considered strange . The officer asks him many wuestions one
question being what is your employment? . When Mead tells the officer he is a writer the answer is

Ray makes a statement on the effect of improvements in our world today. In the story it says ...
but one particular house had all of its electric lights brightly lit, every window allowed
illumination, square and warm in the cool darkness . This is symbolic to Meads actions and
personality. He chooses to live in the light as apposed to the other brain dead citizens who sit by
the T.V all day. Bradburry stresses death in his imagry to show you what ife would be ike in a
world that lets improvements drive humanity away. Examples of his use of imagry would be the

The Federal Republic Of Germany
The Federal Republic of Germany is part of the EU (European Union). Its capital is the beautiful
and globally famous city of Berlin. It is composed by the union of 16 individual states, where
people have the freedom of religion, press and free market economy. Germany has a long history,
this town, just as the majority of all the European towns, was established during the Roman Empire.
More than 200 years ago, the north and west regions of Europe were filled with Germanic tribes,
and even though Julio Caesar pushed the limits of the Roman Empire to the east of the Rhine river,
the Romans were not able to conquered that region nor north Danube, which is now known today as
the beautiful country of Germany. In 1949, the German Federal Republic became a constitutional,
parliamentary democracy. Since its reunification in 1990, the country has been composed of 16
federal states.
After having a four hour conversation via FaceTime with a dear German friend, whom I had the
privilege of meeting back in 2013 when I first visited Germany, I summarized as much as I was
able to the history of this precious country. It was not easy due to a lot of important events that
happened but here is my summary: On November 4 of 1918, the German revolution took place
with about 40,000 marines that invaded the port of Kiel. Three years later, on November 1921, the
Sturmabteilung aka SA was formally formed by Adolf Hitler. On November of 1923, an army coup
organized by Hitler failed, but again in 1938,
The Gospel Of Valentinus
My class presentation is on the early Gnostic theologian Valentinus. He claimed to know a truth that
he revealed by writing a text called the gospel of truth. The truth in this writing claims that there is a
correct way of life that only Jesus knows. This truth comes forth into the world in the person of Jesus
Christ. Jesus is the savior because He holds the totality of this truth from the Father in Himself. For
some people, they were overcome by darkness which resulted in their forgetfulness. They
experienced this because they did not know the Father. Their forgetfulness would disappear once
they saw Jesus, and the fog that blocked them from seeing the truth and would disappear too. When
Jesus came into the world, error was angry that Jesus led people to the path of truth with this
knowledge He gave them. Jesus was then crucified on the cross by error. In Jesus trials, He
embodied great courage because of the extent He went to bring this knowledge to others. Jesus went
through the cross by remaining present with the people who had the forgetfulness, and He
announced the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Gospel of Thomas teaches Gnosticism along with Valentinus. For a person, the spirit in the
body is good, but not the body. It also explains that all the matter in the world is not good. This
applies to Valentinus when he explained that people who do not know this knowledge have bad
experiences like forgetfulness. The Gospel of Thomas is also similar to the gospel of truth when
it reveals that Jesus was the giver of this secret knowledge. In this gospel, Jesus freed the material
world by revealing this knowledge. Jesus was no different from anyone else, except He held in His
body the secret knowledge that man does not have when they are in the material world. Jesus goal
in the Gospel of Thomas then was to tell man how to be united with the Father, just like in the gospel
of truth by

The Culture of Jamaica
The culture of Jamaica has a strong religion, norms, values and lifestyle that governs the Jamaican
people. There is a rich culture in the island of Jamaica. The people are friendly, the religion is

Dance has always been important to the Jamaicans, from colonial times until the present. Early folk
