Compare Two Western Films Made at Least Twenty Years Apart...
Author: Ben Nichols
Student ID: 394990
Course Name: CMM10 Screen History and Research
Assessment 2: Comparative Essay
Description: Compare two Western films made at least twenty years apart on the basis of the three
of the five frameworks studied in the first block of the unit, and the elements of the western genre
studied in the second block of the unit.
Films selected:
The Great Train Robbery (1903) v True Grit (2010)
Introduction:
When Thomas Edison asked Edwin S.Porter to make The Great Train Robbery (1903) little did
either realise that this film would be the beginning of not only the Western genre but an entire movie
industry. The silent classic, The Great Train Robbery depicts a famous railroad robbery by a

The audience, the industry, and the technology were all very different but what both films where
aiming to achieve is very similar. They are trying to bring to life stories about America s heart and
soul using the best visual skill and capabilities they had available to them. They are also one of the
stories of Film History. It is the historian s contention that understanding the past is useful in
understanding the present (Allan and Gomery, 1985 p6). Indeed, It can be further argued that
without the former it is very unlikely we would be enjoying the latter. They are so different visually
but they are the same in their goals; depicting a great literal story, through the medium of film.
Film Technology:
Edison Films unwitting invention of the movie making industry was driven by a desperate
struggle to make a profit out of his failing product, the Kinetoscope. He was under commercial
attack from rival systems and needed a strong marketing tool to save the flagging technology.
Edwin S Porter, Edison s chief cameraman, produced The Great Train Robbery and the rest is
history. Not a straightforward teleogical history though with a beginning and a pre determined end
with the goal of making films more real. Realism is a relative term in filmmaking. When the actor,
George Barnes appears at the beginning/end of The Great Train Robbery dressed as the bandit chief
and fires his pistol straight at
Parasailing Short Story
Parasailing Sailing over a hundred feet above blue waters sounds incredible, right? Well, I have it
was honestly the most terrifying and thrilling thing I have ever done. I got onto the ship to get to
the bigger bout and thoughts started to creep into my head like a shark was going to attack me,
or I was going to drown. My heart was beating at least 200 beats per second. Too start off this great
story, I got up in the morning of a sunny and bright day at the beach. I was at my Aunt Lorraine s
and she was like Shadee, do you want to do something crazy.
So, I said Yes, of course, I would love to! Before we went to find something too do we went and got
breakfast, and picked up my grandmother. Meanwhile sitting at the beach, we saw this yellow banana
looking raft going across the ocean. I asked, What the heck is that. They replied, I have no idea.
As my Grammy Kim got up, we all got up. My Aunt Rainy asked, Where are you going. Kim said,
To see where those boats are taking them. While, we walking we found out the yellow raft is
called a banana boat. Which was extremely ironic. We laugh for at least ten minutes. It was so
hilarious. The banana boat was taking people to a bigger boat called the Captain. I said, Can we go
parasailing or just ride the Banana Boat? As a man started walking up to us he said, Hi, my name is
Seth. I work for the Banana Boat and parasailing company. Are you guy interested in riding any of
The Age Of Fables Or Stories Of Gods And Heroes
Throughout my short life of 16 years, compared to my parents long lives of 46 years, I ve
witnessed alongside them the many hardships we ve had to face both together as a family and
alone as human beings. Whether it was moving houses and schools for the sixth time, or missing
up to weeks of school due to my Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, my family and I have always
found the will to keep going and keep trying, despite knowing we were probably not going to last
at any one given location. Of course me and my siblings as children, knew not of the adult
struggles, so all we could do was keep a positive attitude and be friendly with others. Our parents
of course, dealt with it quite differently and found the will to keep going due to our dependence of
them, and of the hope that we d finally settle down. For this and many of the reasons that the The
Age of Fables or Stories of Gods and Heroes by Thomas Bulfinch, The Myth of Sisyphusby Albert
Camus, Matthew 26 and 27 of the New King James Version of the Bible , and The Crisis by
Thomas Paine express, the human soulis designed to continue struggling despite despair and known
futility. In the lowest of times, when everything is going very horribly, one believes there is no
escape or alternative, so giving up may seem the only answer; however, commitment to what is
thought to be right will not lead to failure. As long as one continues taking action to stand for what
is right, then defeat will never be a part of the
Summary Of The Poem We Real Cool
The poem We Real Cool by Gwendolyn Brooks, to summarize is about how the pool players (line
1) do not entirely care about school, as well as anything that is remotely good leaving them all to
relish in the uncertainty of their demise. In the first stanza is where there is more substance, with
we real cool. We / Left school. (lines 3 4), creating the image of the pool players leaving school,
possibly having dropped out. The second stanza lets the reader know that the players are
spending their time out late, with the lines Lurk late. We / Strike straight. (lines 5 6) and not up
to anything good. The third stanza is where the players start to celebrate all the mischief they
have caused by drinking the sorrows away, in the lines Sing sin. We / Thin gin. (lines 7 8). The
last stanza Jazz June. We / Die soon. (lines 9 10) is focused on the realization on how it might be
Summer, but are not aware, since other individuals do not believe that they should be alive much
longer, from their bad habits and everything in between. Response: We Real Cool
My analysis on the poem, We Real Cool on the first read through was how real it became. Even
though this poem was quite short, it packed a ton of meaning into a small amount of space. The
main purpose I conclude of this poem was how those that go out and party, caring more about
what their friends are doing then their school work. These types of people with this mindset is
not going to fundamentally help in the long run. So being cool is not all it is cracked up to be
and those that want to be cool need to realize all the good and bad that come along with it. Not
going to class because of deciding not to go is a critical piece of the puzzle to the path of wanting
to succeed versus choosing to not succeed. We are all in control of our life to an extent and can
make our own choices to create change, it s what we decide to do with it, that matters.
Summary: Rite of Passage The poem Rite of Passage by Sharon Olds is focused on a young boy s
birthday party, coming from the Mother s perspective and how the young boys are overly
competitive. This poem breaks down into a representation of what the mother perceives will be the
children at the party in the
The Complexity Of Functional Images
With the cognitive of maturity in artistic fields, visual culture has become a mainstream form of
contemporary culture. People s reading range has gradually expanded from text reading into visual
image interpretation. Narrative illustration is an integral part of the image and text. The different
between story and other visual form is it using a unique system of visual expression to building the
structure of information and telling stories. The multiplicity of narrativity is the most essential
characteristics. The visual rhythm is the reappearing of continuity element in whole story. Sequential
images in narrativeillustration always playing a significant role to explain story structure and express

Moreover, different characters as the principal part in the story to brining the aesthetics and ploy
sensuality to the audience. The visual rhythm bring reader into an immersive atmospheres by
following the story structure in serial image. It s exoteric, diversified, also figurative and motorial.
There are three main way to build a narrative illustration: the integrality tone deign in whole story,
the specific expression of theme and space composition and the setting of symbolistic metaphor. All
of these considerations can be seen to work within Todorov s theory in the case of illustrate narrative.
Reading a narrative illustration, the tone in the image always leading the audience into a world of
diversified visual enjoyment by following the story structure. The color visual language as a
complementary strategy to the other visual language, which is creating the story into a vivid
multifaceted space. The case of color synesthesia as a strong visual impaction within psychology,
also combining the unprecedented emotional felling with the perception of colors. Edwin Boring
(1945) said every representation of retinal phenomenon are involves on psychological felling.
Because of the physical synesthesia, the color had the fells of cold, warm, sad and happy etc. During
the process of reading, the audience no matter are adult or children, they will naturally adjustment
the association when they aimed at the changing color in the frame. It is produced the inner

The calculation uses information from both the company s income statement and its balance sheet:

Therefore, if net working capital increases, this is an offset to cash flow from operations, whereas if
net working capital decreases, this is an enhancement of the cash flow from operations.
Cash flow from operations is a key indicator of a company s financial health, because without the
ability to generate cash flows from its operations, a company may not be able to survive in the
future: cash flows are the lifeblood of a company.
The verity of compassion exemplifies the reward of life s hardest choices. The verify of pity is
also shown through these epics. In the epic Gilgamesh, Enkidu pities the life of Gilgamesh when
the battle is ended with Enkidu standing up Gilgamesh and extending the offer to be friends.
After the long journey, as Gilgamesh is desperately seeking the plant of everlasting life, the old
immortal man Utnapishtim has pity on Gilgamesh when Utnapishtim directs, In the depths of the
sea lies a plant. It looks like a buckthorn and pricks like a rose. If any man comes into possession
of it, he can, by tasting it, regain his youth! Pity is displayed at the start of The Iliad as goddess
Hera becomes distressed at the site of the Danaans dying and puts pity into the heart of Achilles
to call all of the men into the place of assembly. Andromache prays, No pity for our child/poor
little one, or me in my sad lot soon to be deprived of you! soon, soon/Achaens as one man will set
upon you/and cut you down! Anchises, in The Aeneid, pities the lives of the other family members
by refusing to add additional weight, as a burden, to the family s escape. Through the epics, pity
has been a verity that has saved and changed the life of many characters. Pride is the verity that
troubled characters in the epics. It was said to be that Gilgamesh was the mightiest warrior and no
one could match Gilgamesh in combat. Knowing this, Gilgamesh is a hubris
The Wife Of Bath s Tale
Geoffrey Chaucer The Father of English, is best known for his literary work The Canterbury Tales.
In which his most realistically developed character is The Wife of Bath. In The Canterbury Tales,
the Wife of Bath s Tale has been seen as controversial because in the middle ages womanhad no say
in anything including marriage. She considered herself an expert as a wife, (Chaucer, l. 12) and
on marriage because of her past experiences in five marriages. She believed that a marriage
controlled by the woman is a happy marriage, and her beliefs on marriage are directly connected to
the tale she tells.
The Wife of Bath, whose name is Alisoun, has some unusual ideas on marriage, especially for a
woman in the Middle Ages. She considers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In her tale a handsome young knight is charged with rape and is sentenced to death by the king.
The queen gives him a year and a day to spare his life if he can answer the question what is the
thing that women most desire? (Chaucer, l. 81) On the last day he meets an elderly woman who
gives him the answer and he promises her that when all of it is over he will give her whatever she
desires if it is in his power. The knight goes before the queen and presents the answer that was told
to him by the elderly woman and the answer is correct. When he asked the woman what she
wanted she replied to be your wife. The knight refused to marry the old woman, he pleaded her to
ask for anything else but that. The old woman said that she would only settle for marriage and so
they got married. On their wedding the knight expressed his feeling and how he thought that he
was to good for her because she was too old, ugly, and poor. The woman then told him that
although she was old, ugly, and poor she would be a faithful wife. She then proposed to him a
choice would he want her to be old, ugly, poor, and faithful or young and beautiful and risk that
when his friends came over to visit they would visit for the sole purpose of seeing her. The knight
then told her that she could choose and the woman told him does this mean i will be in control of
this marriage? The knight told her yes, yes, yes. She then became young beautiful and
Proposed Plan for Resolving the Housing Crisis in America...
The United States foreclosure and housing market problems have been well documented in recent
years. This issue has only been heightened by the 2009 economic downturn. Can the sky rocketing
foreclosure market truly be blamed on the recession, however? Can the issue be pinned down on
the masses of people who have lost their occupations? Surely many of the cases can be traced back
to these harsh conditions, but many more, most likely, can be attributed to something else.
Foreclosures are not a new phenomenon and have been a part of American society for years. So, in
order to determine a plan for how best to reduce the number of American families losing their
homes, it seems best to look backwards rather than simply at the present. The... Show more content

Though it may not immediately impact the economy for the better, the far reaching
consequences will be much greater than simply writing a new homeowner a check for $8,000
that they may or may not have earned. This financial education will focus on a far ranging
plethora of topics, but in regards to buying a house specifically, there will be three main pillars:
the importance of a savings account for emergencies, the importance of living by a budget, and a
more expansive area of loan and interest education. The education of the masses must start early
on for many reasons. One is that by the time most citizens are old enough or financially
established enough to buy a house, their spending habits and mindset have been locked, and it
would take a great deal of change to undo them. It will be much easier to produce a more
financially savvy buyer if the principles have been instilled since youth. It is suggested that a
person is unable to become a native speaker of a language once a certain age has been reached. In
much the same way, it can be assumed that it will be much more difficult for an adult to become a
native speaker of strong financial conscious than for a child who has repeatedly practiced the tenants
of smart decision making. The three pillars of sound home buying will be taught beginning in fifth
or sixth grade, when youth are
