The poem ‘Farmers Wife’ written by P Lalitha Kumari (Volga) reflects the helpless condition of farmer’s
widow wife. In the poem a farmer’s wife was complaining about his act of committing suicide. She was
worried about her future life.
Farmer’s wife call her husband virtuous and she as poor sinner because she has to face all the problems. The
farmer committed suicide by taking poison. His cotton crop has worm eaten and destroyed. His debt
remained, He was unable to bend his head and stretch his hands out in front of the creditors. But Farmer’s
wife born with head bent and stretch her hands. She was born with difficulties. Many times she was escaped
from death, her husband abused her, reviled her and kicked her when he was drunk. But she thought he was a
man.
The Farmer didn’t took the responsibility of a man. He escaped from the problem and put all his burden on his
widow wife. She can’t leave her four children to the dust like worm eaten cotton pod. She decided to live and
struggle with the problems. She teach her children that they must live. Embrace life not death. Death is not the
solution to the problems. We should love the life and face the problems with courage. Committing suicide is a
sin.
