The Dark Side of Disney
When you first meet someone, what are the first things that you notice? Sex? Race? Or maybe the
brands of clothing that indicate social status? Human beings as a society judge and categorize
others, labeling those who stray from social norm as weird or strange. Who are we to make these
judgments and where did these ideas of right and wrong come from? The Walt DisneyCompany plays
an important role in depicting who and what people should and shouldn t be. Every aspect of
Disney, including movies, TV shows, and products, are supported by most of the world for
entertainment and seemingly honest messages of innocence and magic. Beneath the image of
innocence, Disney is also a media empire, a global conglomerate consisting of... Show more content

Mickey Mouse Monopoly appeals to pathos when they discuss Disney s influence on children and
interview children and their insights on various Disney films, showing how sociological ideas
presented in Disney films effect the cultural development of children. This is really directed at
parents and people who want to be parents as it makes them think about all the issues Mickey
Mouse Monopoly is bringing to light. Justin Lewis, a university professor, points out that Disney
is so large and spread out globally, that its stories will be the stories that will form and help form a
child s imaginary world, all over the world, and that s an incredible amount of power, enormous
amount of power (Mickey Mouse Monopoly). He continues to say that we should question what
Disney is teaching and what children are learning from their films. He uses rhetorical question to
strengthen his point, asking if these [are] the stories we really want our children to hear (Mickey
Mouse Monopoly). He brings to light that if those kinds of questions aren t being asked, then people
are allowing Disney to shape the imaginations of millions of children. This really sets up the film s
discussion on the influence Disney has on children. By introducing this part of
Difference Between John Smith And William Bradford s Journals
John Smith and William Bradford were two authors of the 1600s, who wrote journals about the the
way they lived in the New World. John Smith s journal was filled with adventure and talked about
how heroic he was to persuade people to come to America. William Bradford s journal was about
his voyage to coming to America and his spiritual teachings and beliefs. The three main difference
between John Smith and William Bradford s Journals are their styles of writing, preconceived notion
of the Native Americans, and their reasons for coming into America.
The first difference between John Smith and William Bradford journals was their writing styles and
point of view, since they had different audiences and purposes. John Smith would write about his
The Strength Of Religion On The South
The Strength of Religion in the South
Religion plays a different role in southern culture than it does in other parts of the nation. In the bible
belt , religion is very integrated into both the local and regional cultures, demonstrated by higher
attendance in religious activities and more religion affiliated establishments per square mile. The
purpose of this paper is to understand how religion plays a role in the life of women in the south and
discuss the ever changing pressures they feel from their community and family. It will also explore
why religious ties in the south are stronger than those of the rest of the nation. The research method
for this paper is an extended life history of Janet Buckwell, who has lived her entire life ... Show

When she became a young adult, she began attending the regular church service with her parents.
One Sunday during the regular service Janet remembers that the preacher had an alter calling ,
which was a special event. The preacher requested that anyone who wanted to be baptized to
please come to the altar. Janet said she could feel God asking her to step forward and become
baptized, however, she did not step up because her parents did not nod at her that it was all right for
her to go up, instead, they just looked up and focused on the preacher. Janet felt she had missed the
opportunity to accept her calling from God.
Janet felt betrayed by her parents because they had denied her the chance to embrace her religion.
These feelings of betrayal lead her to pull away from her parents and her religion. As she
progressed through high school, Janet s life revolved less and less around her religion and more
and more around her own life. She no longer attended church every Sunday and the very same
parents who would not let her embrace her religion began making her feel guilty for not attending
services. She remembers her dad leaving for church each Sunday saying he would pray for her. Her
community also noticed she was not attending church services and that added to her guilt.
Adding to the confusion about her religion was the fact that each side of her family expressed and
acted out their religion
Washington Crossing The Delaware Compare And Contrast Essay
Emmanuel Leutze s painting Washington Crossing the Delaware shares some similarities with
David Shulman s poem Washington Crossing the Delaware ; however, the dissimilarities are more
abundant. These works of art and literature portray the scene of that remembered Christmas day
when Washington and his army set out to conquer to Hessian people. Although they have
similarities, there are some differences in these works that are nothing less than noticeable. Join me
in observing the similarities and dissimilarities in these pieces.
There are parallels in Shulman s poem and Leutze s painting and I would like to point them out.
First, how the water is represented in these two works are very much alike. In the painting, you can
see that they are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main difference in these two works is the disorder and movement. The painting by Leutze
expresses more of a chaotic scene while the Shulman s poem creates a slightly more composed
environment. Struggle is more evident in the painting. While the poem is serene and instills
confidence and excitement for battle in the reader, the painting depicts struggling men fighting for a
cause we are not quite certain of. Also, the feeling depicted in the painting is predominantly
distraught while the poem makes me feel the scene is filled with precise determination. Washington
commands: so go alight, crew, and win! (Shulman line 14). This is him telling them to go sneak,
fight, and win the battle. This makes evident some of the varying differences of these two works.
You can see how in the painting Washington is not promoting ideas or confidence in his crew like he
is the poem (Leutze Washington Crossing the Delaware). This is a leading reason in the difference of
disorder. Also, the painting shows ice as a major obstacle, while in the poem no ice is mentioned.
This shows how there is another element of conflict in the painting than in the written work which
can add to the madness happening. The poem depicts the brave, fearless leader watching the army he
is leading and rather triumphantly commanding them to go into battle and win (Shulman s
Washington Crossing the Delaware ). When the poem
Slaughterhouse-Five Vonnegut
Throughout Slaughterhouse Five, Vonnegut chooses to use special literary techniques that better
explain his own encounters in war as well as help his readers bare the horridness of war. Vonnegut
adds black humor in his text to benefit readers as well as an author as character perspective to set
barriers and help protect his own memories in the war. Without adding these two specific devices,
Vonnegut could possibly have lost reader s interests in the book or lost his own interest in writing the
book. Vonnegut includes himself in scenes within Slaughterhouse Five to portray an author as
character unique style. It is in the tenth chapter when Vonnegut switches points of view to reveal
himself as one of the soldiers alongside Billy.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another literary device Vonnegut uses within his Slaughterhouse Five is black humor. This is
found in the book so readers are able to feel more lighthearted when remembering the war. There
are though, critics who believe by adding black humor, Vonnegut is degrading the tragedy of war.
I believe Vonnegut uses black humor in his attempt to console readers (as well as himself), in
hopes of making the horrific, painful, unthinkable events of the war more bearable to read about.
Just in the first chapter readers see Mary O Hare s frustration towards Vonnegut for even wanting
to write a book about the war in the first place. You were just babies in the war like the ones
upstairs! // ...You ll pretend you were men instead of babies, and you ll be played in the movies
by Frank Sinatra and John Wayne or some of those other glamorous, war loving, dirty old men.
And war will look just wonderful, so we ll have a lot more of them. And they ll be fought by
babies like the babies upstairs. Mary does not even know what Vonnegut is going to write about
the war and here she is yelling at Vonnegut, showing her feelings of the pain caused by the war.
There are many other people in the world that will be just like Mary and be completely against a
book based on the topic of war because it is such a
20th Century Somalia
20th Century Somalia Somalia is a country located in the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by Ethiopia
to the west, Djibouti to the northwest, Kenya to the southwest, the Gulf of Aden to the north, and
the Indian Ocean to the east. With the longest coastline on the continent, its terrain consists mainly
of plateaus, plains, and highlands. It is made up of the former British Protectorate of Somaliland
and Italy s former Trust Territory of Somalia. Somalia s modern history began in the late 1800 s,

Arguments For And Against Scepticism
Scepticism can be defined as A view that doubts whether any of our beliefs can be supported by
adequate or sufficient evidence. (Richard H. Popkin, 1993, p. 182). This essay will be discussing
the arguments for and against the practise of scepticism. It will be focusing on the ideas of Socrates,
Descartes, Hume and Wittgenstein and it will elaborate on how their opinions on scepticism
contrast, in part, due to their historical setting. It will clarify and identify scepticisms role in society
and the changing role of philosophyfrom ancient to modern times.
Socrates began a revolution in philosophy when he called philosophy down from the heavens
(Popkin, 1999, p. 23). He challenged the moral complaceny of his fellow citizens in Athens. He
embarressed them with their inabililty to answer questions such as ... Show more content on

To define scepticism would go against its very principle as that definition could very well be
doubted as its true form which in turn shows the primary flaw of scepticism itself to question
everything is to never move forward on a basis of acceptance. Therefore scepticism should be
used sparsely as questioning does help us move forward as a society. For example questioning
medical practices can help to advance a field by investing in new studies. Hume s science of man
principal is an example of how investing moderately in scepticism can help society. If there was an
absence of sceptics in the world we would be stuck in a never ending circle. Scepticism helps to
influence others with an opinion that may not always be the most popular. Wittgenstein gives
examples just how far scepticism can go with his arguments against Solipsism. This is the danger of
scepticism; this chosen isolation from the rest of humanity can lead to the beginning of cults and
sects which can have disastrous impacts on society. Scepticism in its finest form, is when it is
balanced and used with some common
The Down Fall of Rose Williams and Blanche DuBois
Tennessee Williams is known to be a Southern playwright of American drama. Williams knew
how to show haunting elements like psychological drama, loneliness, and inexcusable violence in
his plays. Critics say Williams often depicted women who were suffering from critical downfalls
due to his sister Rose Williams. Rose was always fighting with a mental health condition known as
schizophrenia all her life. The character Laura in The Glass Menagerie is always compared to
Rose, because they were both socially awkward and very quiet girls. This may be true, but one can
look at Blanche DuBoisfrom A Street Car Named Desire shadows his sister s life and characteristics
more than Laura did. In the obituary of Rose Williams that was written by... Show more content on

During a party when Rose was twenty six, Williams went off on her by saying, I hate the sight of
your ugly old face (Hoare)! Rose s illness made her become delusional and a compulsive liar. This

illness. Rose s schizophrenia only got worse as time went on. Finally, her parents felt she was not
fit for society in her state. Rose was taken to the State Hospital in Farmington where doctors
performed a bilateral prefrontal lobotomy. Tennessee Williams regrets to not stopping the lobotomy,
because his sister was never the same again and never recovered. Due to the regret, Williams
financed his sister s private care until his death in 1983. Even though the siblings had a very
dysfunctional relationship; Tennessee shows the haunting and suffering he felt in his plays due
to his sister s illness. Williams first introduces Blanche DuBois in the play with the following
description, She is daintily dressed in a white suit with a fluffy bodice, necklace and earrings of
pearl, white gloves and hat, looking as if she were arriving at a summer tea or cocktail party
(Williams 15). This description depicts Blanche as a high society woman and could do better than
living in New Orleans. Blanche is only putting on airs from this description. This means that she is

Historiography Of The British Empire
Any historiography of The British Raj must first start with the understanding that The British Raj fits
within the broader historic concept of The British Empire. In the late 19th Century, many historians
proposed that the history of The British Empire could be broken down into The First British Empire
and The Second British Empire. The British Raj falls within the category of The Second British
Empire within this view. The previous British involvement in India, via The East India Company,
would largely fall within First British Empire. The opinions of historians, not any official decree
by British law or authorities, are the basis for the concept of multiple periods of The British
Empire. There was never an official start, or end date, for either period of empire. The British
Empire was never an official entity, as in there was not a document or constitution dictating how it
was administered. As a result, the colonial administrations varied depending on the colony to
which they belonged. The views on The British Empire, during its height, were not a single
monolithic view shared by all British citizens, but varied across the full spectrum from unwavering
support to strong opposition. Joseph Chamberlain s 1897 book The True Conception of Empire
provides an excellent quote that sums up a common mindset of the era. We feel now that our rule
over these territories can only be justified if we can show that it adds to the happiness and
prosperity of the people,

The Importance of Nutrition and Sleeping Habits In The Classroom
Having good nutrition and sleeping habits is very important for education. It is important for
children and adolescents to perform well in the classroom so that they get the most out of their
education. Having poor sleeping habits or poor eating habits can have many harmful effects on a
child s classroom performance. If children have good eating habits as well as good sleeping habits
they will perform better and be able to live up to their potential.

School meals are now being made healthier so that children can practice good nutrition skills.
Children of all socioeconomic levels are at risk for poor nutrition. Some children do not get
enough to eat each day because their families lack money to buy sufficient food. Other children
consume enough food but have diets high in fat, sugar, and sodium that put them at risk for obesity
or heart disease and other chronic illnesses ( ). These poor diets can harm a child s classroom
performance and impede their learning ability. Poor nutrition among children in America is on the
rise. This is due, in part, to poor eating habits like skipping meals, overeating, working parents eating
on the run, and fast food establishments ( ). These factors not only cause a child health problems but
also impedes their learning. If a child cannot use his cognitive abilities to the fullest it will be harder
to learn, participate in class, and function properly throughout the day. Inadequate nutrition affects
the long term development of the child ( ). This could be detrimental to a child all the way into
adulthood. Poor eating habits could persist into college and then hinder them from being as
productive as they could
Analysis Of Alexander Pope s Frankenstein
Throughout history, humans have been fascinated the inherent bond that exists between ourselves
and Nature. During the eighteenth century, known also as the Reformation period, there was a push
in European society towards science and reason being the epicenter of culture. During this time,
Alexander Pope wrote the poem Essay on Man which was intended to be an outline of perennial,
universal truths. The emphasis was primarily on the nature of reason rather than Nature itself. After
this time period came the Romantic period, lasting from 1785 1832. It was in 1818 that Mary
Shelley wrote Frankenstein, also known as The Modern Prometheus , an imaginative tale about a
monster created by man. The relationships between Nature and the characters are dynamic in that
they change frequently. They appear, in many instances, to be a vehicle for expressing emotion. By
examining and writing about the way humans interact with the Nature surrounding them, Pope and
Shelley made it possible to analyze and highlight common relationships between humans and
Nature during their lifetime; for Pope and his peers, it was more about reason and ___ (word for
only coming to conclusions based on ur five senses), while during Shelley s time period, people
tended to have a more emotional relationship with Nature.
Shelley utilized imagery, metaphor, simile, and personification relative to Nature, frequently paired
with tone, in many scenes throughout Frankenstein. Whether it be to uplift or depress
Gender Roles In Ancient Mediterranean
Gossiping during the Ancient Mediterranean was a form of social control, which enforced social
norms such as ethical sexual behaviors. Gossip is usually established from witnessing an action that
is considered a deviation from the standard behaviors within a given society. Set restraints and
values produce a power dynamic and allow individuals to claim their subjecthood; this socially
constructed definition of subjecthood allows people to categorize themselves within the social and
political hierarchy in order to make sense of who they are, such as their sexuality. The interdictions
built and created an understanding of one s subjecthood and were controlled by gossip. As a result,
gossip defines what is acceptable within that society, the creation... Show more content on

For example, if a couple did not perform sexual intercourse in the manner that abided the
interdictions stated in the Talmud, there would be public and physical consequences on their
children. Why are there lame children? Because they [their fathers] turned over the tables. Why are
there dumb children? Because they talk during intercourse. Why are there blind children? Because
they look at that place (Nedarim 20a b; Boyarin p. 110). In this interpretation of the text, the
ministering angels told R. Yohanan b. Dehabi that those who perform unconventional sexual
behavior will have children with birth defects. The deformed children became public evidence that
the couple did not follow the code of the Talmud and they would have had to confront the gossip
that circled around the community about them and their children. This also deals with the issue of
the panopticon, which is the idea that God is the all seeing eye and is always watching you, even
in the married bed. This theory of surveillance functions as a social policing because it shapes
behaviors such as those in the marital bed and enforces the ideas in the
