What Is The Theme Of A Retrieved Reformation By O Henry
The intriguing short story, A Retrieved Reformation written by O. Henry speaks the story of a man
who is trying to turn his life around. Starting in prison by the name of Jimmy Valentine, he creates a
vile reputation for himself as a villainous criminal. This reputation follows him all through his life
but, when he sees a glimpse of being able to have a perfect life he snatches it up. After meeting the
alluring Ms.Annabel, Jimmy changes his name to Ralph Spencer and commences a different life, but
showing his true background could mess everything up. One theme this story suggests is that love
can alter a person s life. The belief in someone that they can accomplish something great is an act
of love. One example of this is when Ralph gets released from prison. The warden bestows upon
Ralph helpful advice for his life. You ll go out in the morning. Brace up, and make a man of
yourself. You re not a bad fellow at heart. Stop cracking safes and live straight. This is significant
because it reveals that even the people who had known Ralph as a criminal still believe that he is
capable of changing his life for the better. Also, knowing that people believe in him can make it
easier for him to leave his life of crime behind. Not only is support from others motivation for
change, but having an epiphany brings in a whole new light. Ralph decides to write Ben, an old
friend of Ralph s who had only known him as a criminal, to tell him about how wonderful his new

POSTMODERNISMO Y MODERNIDAD INTRODUCCION

Persuasive Essay On Climate Crisis
As advances in technology and medicine lead to longer lifespans and lowered mortality from
disease, some people worry about overpopulating the earth. These people also argue that aid work
will fuel the population growth and demolish one of the only forms of population control. Melinda
Gates explains that as people work to provide more education and contraceptives to women in third
world countries, the birth rate will naturally decrease, especially as they worry less about having a
child survive into adulthood (Rosen). Currently there is enough to sustain the population and its
growth in the years to come; presently the issue is not the number of people, but rather, the
distribution and effective use of resources.
The World Economic Forum s Global Shaper Survey shows that most millennials agree that climate
change is the most urgent issue and that they can do something to fix it (Jackson). Bill Gates has
mentioned the possibility of a new charity dedicated to solving the climate change issue because he
views it as the most imminent threat to the survival and advancement of humanity. An article on The
Guardian even mentions that The foundation s annual letter for 2015 says their achievements could
be undone by the advancing climate crisis. (Mathiesen). Gates has even theorized that, at the current
rate, we could be facing serious climatic consequences in as little as 15 or 20 years.

As I stared at the once working cartridge in my hands, I felt as though someone had had snapped a

powerless to help me feel better when I needed him to fix something the most. I was eleven years
old after hurricane Ike had devastated GalvestonIsland. Before that point, I never realized how

The Six Circus Basilica
Circus Basilica: The Christian Circus But there stands close by another church, renowned for its
princely decoration, for the great multitude to enter then, a lofty church with towering walls, and a
great one by reason of its proud grandeur, and gifts made it rich (Prudentius, 319). One reading this
would assume that this building is just another church in Rome. In fact, the building that is described
in this quote is the basilicaof S Lorenzo fuori le mura; one of the six, so far discovered basilicas
that are apse ended. Apart from this similarity, they all also have a lot of the dead buried within,
under and around them, and are usually situated around catacombs. The reason these basilicas are so
controversial is because scholars disagree... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, because of the many parallels in structure, I argue that the apse ended plan of the circus
basilicas were based or influenced by the circuses. It was a marketing ploy used by the early
Christians to convert the pagans, as well as to make this new religion easier to accept and relate to.
I also argue that the circus basilicas were based on the circuses as a way to remember the athletes of
Christianity the martyrs that died in the circus for their cause; whose graves tended to be close to
these basilicas, of not named after
Use Of A Theory And Pagerank Algorithm
Mathematics in Football

The purpose of this report is to research the use of mathematics in football. In particular, we have
researched the use of network theory and PageRank algorithm. The report aims to consider which
strategies are optimal and discuss whether teams ought to adopt a more mathematical approach to on
field play.

Introduction
Network theory is becoming more and more used within football to help teams analyse and change
their style of play. It consists of a collection of nodes, with edges joining them that are weighted
depending on how frequent a path is used. In football, the nodes represent the players of a team, the
edges will be the passes between them and the weight will be the amount of passes between them.
We will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The PageRank algorithm gives more weight to a link if it comes from a high ranking page. In
terms of football this means a pass from a popular player is more valuable than a pass from a
player who is hardly involved in the game. Player s statistics constantly change throughout the
game and the PageRank score of a player depends on the score of his teammates so all scores must
be computed at the same time and the algorithm is only finished once the game has ended. In
summary, PageRank algorithm roughly assigns to each player the probability that he will have the
ball after a reasonable number of passes have been made. [8]

Mathematical Background
One way to analyse players position is closeness centrality, which is defined as the inverse geodesic
distance of a node in the network [1]:
(1)
Where Aij is the total amount of passes from player i to j. This formula uses incoming and outgoing
passes as equal measure. This will show how well connected the players are to each other.

Another way is betweenness centrality, which measures the extent to which a node lies on paths
between other nodes[2]:
(2)
Where is the number of geodesic paths from j to k going through i and is the total number of
geodesic paths.

The PageRank algorithm can be defined by: (3)

Where = is the total number of passes made by player , is a heuristic parameter that represents the
probability of the player keeping the

Dreams and Success in Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman

In Arthur Miller s play, Death of a Salesman, Miller probes the dream of Willy Lowman while
making a statement about the dreams of American society. This essay will explore how each
character of the play contributes to Willy s dream, success, and failure.

Willy is the aging salesman whose imagination is much larger than his sales ability. Willy s wife,
Linda, stands by her husband even in his absence of realism. Biff and Happy follow in their father s
fallacy of life. Willy s brother, Ben is the only member of the Loman family with the clear vision
necessary to succeed. Charlie and his son Benard, on the other hand, enjoy better success in life

But in the beautiful, ironic complexity of her creation, she is also Willy s and their sons
destroyer. In her love Linda has accepted Willy s Greatness and his dream, but while in her
admiration for Willy her love is powerful and moving, in her admiration for his dreams, it is
lethal. She encourages Willy s dream, yet she will not let him leave her for the New Continent, the
only realm where the dream can be fulfilled. She want to reconcile father and son, but she attempts
this in the context of Willy s false values. She cannot allow her sons to achieve that selfhood that
involves denial of these values (Gordon p. 316). Linda is also caught up in Willy s lies and
therefore does nothing but help fuel the fire in the inferno of their dreams and ambitions. She lets
this whole masquerade continue right in front of her instead of doing something to stop their out of
control lies.

Also, Biff the oldest son, continues to search for his purpose in life. Due mainly to all the hot air
Willy always feeds him, Biff continues to stumble in his fight for life. Biff has never had the
ability to hold down a job very long due to his inability to take orders and do his time in the trenches
before becoming a success at a particular job.

Richard J. Foster states, Biff, who in the play as an amplification or reflection of Willy s problems,

First Time Homebuyer Guide For Buying A Home
First Time Homebuyer Guide Buying a home is arguably one of the most important decisions any
adult will make. Not only do you want to find a home you love and that meets your needs, but you
also need to find a home that works for your financial situation. Although this process may be
stressful and intimidating, it is absolutely possible to get through it successfully. The purpose of
this guide is to help you through the steps to purchase your home, from finding a realtor all the
way to closing. 1.Finding a Realtor and Laying the Groundwork Choosing a Realtor Choosing a
capable, trustworthy realtor can make the home buying process so much easier. Start by searching
online for real estate agencies in the area or asking friends, family, and colleagues for
recommendations. Look for an agent that is experienced, knowledgeable, and has a personality that
meshes comfortably with yours. You will be working extensively with this person so having a good
rapport is just as important as their professional credentials. When you meet with an agent, there are
some important questions you need to ask. Ask the agent to explain the entire buying process and
ask questions about what services the agent will provide at each step. Don t forget to ask the agent
about their fee structure. Additionally, inquire about how long the agent has been working in the
field. A less experienced agent may not necessarily be incapable but do make sure that they are
knowledgeable and savvy. Reputable agents
Blindly Obeying Authority Essay
Introduction Individuals often yield to conformity when they are forced to discard their individual
freedom in order to benefit the larger group. Despite the fact that it is important to obey the
authority, obeying the authority can sometimes be hazardous especially when morals and
autonomous thought are suppressed to an extent that the other person is harmed. Obedience usually
involves doing what a rule or a person tells you to but negative consequences can result from
displaying obedience to authority for example; the people who obeyed the orders of Adolph Hitler
ended up killing innocent people during the Holocaust. In the same way, Stanley Milgram noted in
his article Perils of Obedience of how individuals obeyed authority and... Show more content on

Stanley Milgram versus Diana Baumrind In Stanley Milgram s The Perils of Obedience ,
Milgram reports from his studies of how far an individual can go in obedience to instructions and
he pointed out that individuals can go as far as causing serious harm to the other people. Basically,
the experiments are meant to test the choice that an individual would make when faced with the
conflict of choosing between obedience to authority and obedience to one s conscience. From the
tests, it was found out that a number of people would go against their own conscience of choosing
between what is wrong and what is right so as to please the individual in authority (Milgram 317).
However, the experiments conducted by Milgram caused a wide range of controversy for instance;
according to Diana Baumrind, the experiments were immoral. Baumrind notes in Review of Stanley
Milgram s Experiments on Obedience that Milgram did not only entrap his subjects, but he also
potentially caused harm to his subjects (Baumrind 329). Based on the arguments that have been
presented by the two authors, it is apparent that the two authors are concerned with real life
situations, authority and ethics but the difference is that they both view these perspectives from
different points of view as indicated by their writings. By and large, they also tend to show the
importance or the insignificance of the experiments. Real Life
The Fall Of The House Of Usher Effect
Edgar Allan Poe once said that the artistry of narratives is in the ability to achieve a unity of effect
(Clement, lecture notes). His narrative The Fall of the House of Usher, is about a man that gets a
letter from an old friend that wants him to go visit because he is sick. When he arrives, he notices
that his friend and his sister is not the only one affected by illness, the house is too. That leads to
the death of the Ushers and the fall of the house. In The Fall of the House of Usher, Poe makes death
and decay, and overall illness, his unity of effect. He establishes this effect through his narrator, the
setting of the story, and the tragedy that affects its characters. In this short narrative, there are many
textual examples that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This alone gives us the sense that the setting is a somber place. From that brief section of text, we
can begin to picture a place that can be taken as being ill and gloomy. The narrator gives us a very
vivid description of the atmosphere of the house. For example, when entering he said it was like
he breathed an atmosphere of sorrow (The Art of the Short Story, 711). A narratives plot may be
the biggest factor in producing an effect. Through the conflict that is presented, the reader is given
events that lead them to become interested in the story and its characters. The conflict that takes
place in this narrative is that Rodrick Usher, the narrators boyhood friend, is sick and he wants the
narrator to go to his estate to visit him. The mystery builds because the illness seems to deadly and
it is unclear what exactly is wrong with him. The narrator learned that the entire family lay in the
direct line of descent and it did not have any enduring branches (The Art of the Short Story, 709).
Although it is not explicitly stated by the Ushers, the reader can infer that the cause of this family s
illness is incest that has gone on for many
Szymborska Use Irony In Poem
Use of irony and imagery in Szymborska s poems and their effectiveness in conveying meaning
Szymborska s poems deal with various matters, mainly those related to her era. One striking
feature in her poems is her prominent use of irony and imagery. This essay will explore areas
where Szymborska uses irony and imagery in her poems and their role in facilitating the reader s
understanding of the ideas in each poem through effects on the reader, with reference to the poems
Starvation camp near Jaslo , Hitler s first photograph , Cat in an empty apartment and Hatred .

the ideas encompassed in them. In the poem Cat in an empty apartment , Szymborska uses human

This is convoluted through indirect descriptions of the cat s anger at his master from different
angles unusual to a cat, like waiting till he turns up and thinking whether he will ever get a lesson
on what not to do to a cat . The purpose of making it convoluted is to connote a sense of instability
in the cat resulting from his disappeared master. The reader is immensely surprised by the irony
used in giving thought processes to the cat, which are beyond the reader s expectation. Phrases
like get a lesson and show his face add to the irony. This irony, coupled with the flow of these
thoughts along with the details used, makes the reader feel the cat s presence and hear his
thoughts. This generates a sense of the cat as an intellectual being and allows the reader to feel and
understand the cat s anger under this characteristic. This anger is justified by the phrase visibly

pushing the reader beyond habitual perceptions to understand the cat s feeling of loss through the
effective conveyance of the cat s anger and
