EEE243/ECE220 - Signals and Systems - Final Examination - Spring 2017

Total Duration: 2 Hours

Total Marks: 100

Instructions:
1) There are 7 questions in total, you have to answer 5 (FIVE) of them INCLUDING AT LEAST ONE
QUESTION FROM Question no. 3 and no. 4 However, you are welcome to answer both!
2) Each question carries equal weight. Weight breakdown of each question will be mentioned in
parentheses next to them if applies.
3) Please be clear, concise, and to-the-point while answering the questions. The amount you “write” is
NOT proportional/correlated to the “score you get”.
4) Fourier Transformation pairs and FT properties table are attached with the question.
5) PLEASE DO NOT RETURN THE QUESTION PAPER, you can take it with you.

1. Consider an LTI system having an

impulse response ℎ(𝑡) as shown in the
right side of Fig.1.
Find out the system’s output for a
step input.

That means, find out the output 𝑦(𝑡) if

the input 𝑥(𝑡) = 𝑢(𝑡)
Fig.1

2. Consider a periodic signal x(t) with a

fundamental frequency ω𝟎 =1. The
magnitude and phase spectra of x(t) are
shown in Fig.2.
Now, x(t) is fed to an LTI system
characterized by the following differential
equation:
𝑦 ′ (𝑡) + 𝑦(𝑡) = 𝑥(𝑡)

Sketch the magnitude and phase spectra

for the output y(t). [15]

Find out the average power of the output

y(t) [5]

3. For the following frequency domain signal X(ω) (roughly shown in Fig.3), find out its corresponding time
domain representation x(t) using Inverse Fourier Transform.

15(𝜔 − 3) 15(𝜔 + 3)
X(𝜔) = 1 + 2 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑐 { } + 2 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑐 { }

4. For the following time domain signal x(t) as shown in Fig.4, find out its corresponding frequency domain
representation X(ω) using Fourier Transform.

5. Consider the following system in Fig.5 where input 𝒙(𝒕) = 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐜( ).
𝝅 𝝅

Find the cutoff frequency, gain and type of the filter , 𝒉(𝒕) so that 𝒚(𝒕) = 𝟐𝒙(𝒕). [15]

(Type of filter means if it is a Low Pass, High Pass or a Band-pass filter)

Also find out the average power of y(t). [5]

6. Find out the Fourier Series coefficients for the following signal 𝑥(𝑡) as shown in Fig.6. Also sketch the
magnitude and phase spectra of 𝒙(𝒕) showing at least 2 non zero coefficients on each side.

Fig.6

7. A signal is given by the equation 𝒙(𝒕) = 𝟐𝒓(𝒕) − 𝟐𝒓(𝒕 − 𝟏) − 𝟐𝒖(𝒕 − 𝟑) [10+5+5]

a) Sketch the signal and find out if 𝑥(𝑡) is energy signal or power signal or neither by
determining the energy and power of the signal.
b) Sketch 𝑥 ′ (𝑡). [𝑖. 𝑒. 𝑠𝑘𝑒𝑡𝑐ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑖𝑟𝑠𝑡 𝑑𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑥(𝑡)]
c) Find out if 𝑥 ′ (𝑡) is and Energy or Power Signal or neither.
