Mass Media in General and Newspapers
PART A: INTRODUCTION 1. Rationale Mass media in general and newspapers in particular
nowadays play a very important role in our lives. Many people even say that living in the world
without newspapers is like living in an isolated island. Newspapers help us become informed
citizens and make better decision by providing a lot of facts. Hard news stories, vital statistics,
weather, sports stories and scores and even calendars are examples of items that help inform
readers. Some newspaper articles help interpret or explain the meaning of news to readers. Besides,
newspapers provide services to readers that is providing information help readers solve business,
home, recreation and daily living problems. Moreover, some items in newspapers are... Show more

Background 1. Newspaper headlines 1.1. What is newspaper headline? Conventionally, it is
believed that newspapers have more readers than any other kind of written text. According to Van
Dijk (1986), for most citizens, news is perhaps the type of written discourse with which they are
confronted most frequently (p. 156). In the newspaper it is the headline that has the highest
readership. It summarizes the content of a story, and entices an audience into reading the article.
According to Ungerer (2000), a headline describes the essence of a complicated news story in a
few words. It informs quickly and accurately and arouses the reader s curiosity (p. 48). Newspaper
headlines are particularly important for the way readers comprehend a news text, they are markers
that monitor attention, perception and the reading process (Van Dijk, 1988). According to Danuta R.
(1998), headline is a unique type of text. It has a range of functions that specifically dictate its shape,
content, and structure and it operates within a range of restrictions that limited the freedom of the
writer. In other words, headline should
Transition To Modern America By Robert A. Divine
After reading Chapter 25 America Past and Present, Volume 2 10th Edition: Transition to Modern
America by Robert A. Divine, The Republican economic policies that led directly to the depression
were caused by the Republican economic policies set in place were popular at the time but failed to
stay involved internationally which eventually led America into the most desperate time in history,
the Great Depression.
The Great Depression is a major event in history. The policies led the rich to get richer and the poor
to get poorer. Many people had no money and no jobs.
The Republican presidents: Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover of the 1920 s
helped create the Great Depression. After the initial shock of the Harding scandals,
Essay On Dissection In Schools
Dissection in High Schools Dissection has become more and more prevalent in high schools in the
last 50 years, so much that it has been estimated that about 75% of pre college level biology classes
have them. Many organizations like PETA and animal humane societies have been bashing
dissection because it can be considered animal cruelty. Studies have shown that dissections have
provided a hands on, authentic approach to understanding anatomyand physiology, but when you
consider the ethics behind dissection, it totally changes the game. I believe that dissections in high
school do help students understand Anatomy and Physiology, but are unethical. Dissections in high
schools are considered unethical based off of their distributors/sources of the cadavers, alternatives
to animal dissection, and how it tells students that it s okay to abuse helpless animals. While people
like to believe that the animals have been killed because they were sick... Show more content on

PETA believes that dissection can even dissuade some people from pursuing careers in science.
Many animal rights groups think that classroom dissection desensitizes students to the sanctity of
life. Reports from MLive (a Michigan broadcast network) show that serial killer Jeffery Dahmer
dissected a frog when he was younger and then went to a dog and then became an infamous serial
killer. Now, I m not saying that since we are dissecting a cat we will become serial killers, but it
shows that someone thought it was okay to treat other beings like so because they were told it was
okay to do in school. Students who plan to go into the medical field would do better with human
cadavers or any of the non animal methods. This would more accurately reflect what they would
encounter in medical school, since according to CNN, more than 90 percent of US medical schools
have abandoned animal dissection in their
Expository Writing
During the semester, the class was assigned writing tasks that were intended to showcase our
strengths and weaknesses in our writing. We were forced to think outside the box and expand on
ideas in our readings. In the beginning of the semester, I was not certain what to except from this
course. Writing has never been my strong suit, early in the semester I struggled with the writings. In
high school, English class was not my favorite subject causing me to not gain the knowledge I
should have, coming into this course with a poor knowledge about expository and narrative writing.
Once I entered this course, the information that was received about expository and narrative writing
helped me tremendously. I became accustomed to the new writing... Show more content on

My weakness that was evident in my writing was my grammar, I made a few mistakes that could ve
been fixed had I revised my grammar more intently. Overall I enjoyed this writing because it was
based off a topic that I could relate to easily. I learned that if I organize my ideas prior to writing, it
makes it a lot easily to write about.
Reflection:
The prompt of the reflection was to reflect on a topic and question it. I wrote about love and why
it is that we love certain things. In my writing, I explained how individuals fall in love based off
quality memories that they have of that a person, place, or thing. My purpose was to provide the
reader with enough information to convince them that love is based off memories. The toughest
challenge that I faced was finding enough information to support my claim. Through multiple
hours of searching the web I was able to find enough information that supported my claim and was
satisfied with my draft that was submitted. While I was revising my paper my focus was to
eliminate any grammatical and or spelling errors that may have been made. Throughout my
writing the strength of it was my sensory imagery, when I talked about my grandmother s home I
made sure to give the reader a good mental image. Another strength that was evident in my writing
was my personal experiences, giving a perspective from my eyes to give the reader a better sense of
what I was trying to say. The weakness of this paper was my
Someone Special To Be My Hero Analysis
Someone Special to be my Hero Wade Boggs once said anyone can be a father but it takes
someone special to be a dad. That would be my father because he was a great father, husband, and
soldier. I still look up to him and he keeps inspiring me to become better and be better I love him
and I m honored to be writing this essay about why I think this. As I said he was a father first, he
taught me no matter what happen that familyalways came first because you cannot always trust them
but they would be there for you if you needed them. He also taught me to respect your wife because
things will get tough and there will be rough patches but she is the motherto your children and you
will always loveher for her and her flaws. He also taught me that... Show more content on

He also taught me that you also needed to be courageous because life is tough and you need the
courage to stand up to it and get the job done. Last he taught me to have honor in whatever I do
because I did it and no one can take that away from me. That s also why I joined the military to
honor my father and be an inspiration to my kids like he was to me. Finally he was a husband to
my mother where I learned many things from him. One thing is that it is harder to be honest than
to lie and that lies can have devastating effects on a marriage so it s always better to just be honest.
He also taught me that we are human and we are not always right no matter how much we think
we are right. Last he taught me to be strong because being a husband means to be the rock in the
relationship and you have to be there for her no matter what situation is going on. This is why I
see him as my dad not just my father because he is a great father which taught and inspired me to be
a great father. He was a great soldier which taught and inspired me to be the best person I can be.
Finally he was a great husband which inspires me to keep being a great husband. I love my dad and
I hope he will stay around for as long as he
The Social Pathology Of Suicide By Emile Durkheim
Emile Durkheim studies the social pathology of suicide in detail. Through the use of both excessive
and insufficient social integration we can grasp suicide in a social context. Durkheim uses the
example of suicide among Jews, Protestants and Catholics within varying cultures and social
settings. This allows us to understand the rates and causes of suicideand how they differ across the
three religions.

Protestants have always had more of an appetite for suicide than the Jewish and Catholic community
(Durkheim, Emile, A Study in Sociology, London: The Free Press, 1951). It is only on some
occasions that this is reversed. Up until the middle of the 19th century, Catholics have committed
suicide more than Jews in all countries, except for in Bavaria. Both Catholicism and Judaism teach
strict disciplines in their individual religions. They both teach self control and obedience, and due to
this suicide is often condemned. Along with this, these religions are often the minority within certain
societies across the globe. Durkheim invites us to investigate the rates and causes of their suicides
with these factors in play. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet here we see that they kill themselves only one third as often as Protestants (Durkheim, Emile, A
Study in Sociology, London: The Free Press, 1951). In Bavaria we see a decline in the difference as
two thirds of the population are among the Catholic community. Suicides of the latter party are only
100 to 275 of those of the Protestant community (Durkheim, Emile, A Study in Sociology, London:
The Free Press, 1951). These statistics greatly contrast to those found in Austria, which is almost
entirely made up of Catholics. A rate of only 155 Protestant to 100 Catholic suicides exist. This
shows that Protestant suicides increase when they re a minority (Durkheim, Emile, A Study in
Sociology, London: The Free Press,
Sam Cooke Song
During the 1960 s protest songs were a big way for musical artists to put forth their opinions and
stances, on controversial events happening in the US, into the American public. Songs by these
artists in the 60 s, were able to connect to many of the feelings of American citizens on
controversial issues that many were afraid to speak out against, through their messages and lyrics.
One song that spoke to several people, on the topic of Civil Rights in America, was A Change Is
Gonna Come by Sam Cooke because of the songs ability to connect greatly with the black
community. It was able to tap into the anger and frustration that many felt because of the racism and
prejudice. It also was able to tap into the many hopeful thoughts that individuals were having in this
time too. This song was able to connect to not only to the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There was a great connection between Sam Cooke and him becoming a protest singer for Civil
Rights. As a black man himself he was face with many troubles that African Americans faced
during this time. The moment that triggered this song came In the fall of 1963, Cooke faced a
direct affront: He and his band were turned away from a Holiday Inn in Shreveport, La... he became
obstreperous to the point where his wife, Barbara, said, Sam, we d better get out of here. They re
going to kill you. And he says, They re not gonna kill me; I m Sam Cooke. To which his wife said,
No, to them you re just another ... you know. (www.npr.org). Within a few months of this altercation
happening, A Change Is Gonna Come was in the works of being made. This moment shows the
moment where the connection came together for him, that he needs to fight for his rights for himself
and his family, through music. This song and his activism was the result of the discrimination that he
faced during this time and also the discrimination that many other African Americans
Living Here Was Nothing Special
I live in a small town called Ocean City, New Jersey. To me, living here was nothing special.
Ironically, anytime I say that is where I m from I hear, Wait, you live in Ocean City?! That is my
favorite place in the world. We go there every summer! How can a place be a bother to someone
and an amazing get away to another? I went to Ocean City High School, where I could walk five feet
to the beach. Who could hate that? I sure could. I begged my parents to let me transfer my first
two years. I went to a Catholic school from kindergarten through 8th grade while everyone else at
my school attended the public middle schools in the area, which meant that everyone was already
friends and I had to make new ones. This was my first time ever in public schooling, and I felt like
a lost fish in the sea. Obviously things got better and I ended up making some of the best
friendships that I know will last a lifetime, but I still can t deny that I thought I could say June 18th,
2015, graduation, was going to be the best day of my life. Then things changed. This summer I
worked on the beach and was never done later than 12:00, so I went every single day after I
clocked out. To say I gained an appreciation for where I live would be an understatement. There is
nothing more relaxing than hearing the crashes of the big blue waves slowly putting me to sleep
as I lay in the warm sun. I was slowly beginning to realize why everyone loves this place so much.
