Uglies Scott Westerfeld Essay
For the science fiction unit, I read the book Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. This story is the first part of
a 4 book series. The author writes mostly science fiction, but other types too, for young adults.
This book contains a futuristic setting where everyone is ugly, and then when they turn 16, they get
an operation done where they become absolutely beautiful. All of the pretties live together,
completely separated from all of the uglies who live together. The main character is a 15 year old girl,
almost 16, named Tally Youngblood. She is an adventurous girl who loves to sneak out and play
tricks on others in Uglyville, but she is excited to grow up and become pretty. She is also loyal
which plays a big role throughout the book because she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is shown in the story when it states Shay, I never would have gotten used to the idea. I don t
want to be ugly all my life. I want those perfect lips, and for everyone to took al me and gasp. And
for everyone who sees me to think Who s that? (89). Right now, Tally is hung up on the being
pretty and the idea that being pretty is better than ugly. She doesn t want to follow Shay, who is
running away, because she is basing her decision off of the appearance of pretties vs. herself, an
ugly. But, later on in the story, Tally s mindset changes. She clutched the pendant, squeezing the
undenying metal until her muscles, as if forcing into her own mind the almost unthinkable fact that
she might really remain an ugly for life. But somehow not ugly al all. She opened her hand and
threw the necklace into the center of the fire (267). This shows how Tally has learned not to judge
people and her decisions based on appearances because she doesn t mind staying ugly for life
because she doesn t even think she is that ugly anymore. Also, she burned the pendant that Dr. Cable
gave her showing that she wants to leave the pretty life completely
My Second Semester Of College At Florida Atlantic University
May came around at long last. So did the end of my second semester of college at Florida Atlantic
University. Not only did I survive my freshman year, I thrived, passing eight of my nine joint
courses with A s and getting A minus on the other one. Just like Neon Leon shocked the departed
Muhammad Ali in 1978, I defied my own expectations and those of a few among my closest
friends and family. Did I soon spend the next few months indulging in summer merriment at the
beach, getting my tan on while thirteen year old boys fawned over pictures of Selena Gomez?
Nope. I took summer classes to keep my mind sharp and knock out a few of the requirements
towards a degree which I d earn three years later. One such class = a six week crash course in
public speaking. Everything went well until I got an assignment to create, practice, and deliver a
three to five minute speech involving someone who stood out. The possibilities overwhelmed me
until I recalled someone with an outstanding life, hit him up on my cell, and talked to him in
person one hot Saturday afternoon. Grandpa explained how he and Jay stayed in Nice for two
weeks, joined a beach club in the Mediterranean for eleven dollars each, and enjoyed themselves.
Yes, the same Nice where eighty four people got killed in a terror attack on July 14, 2016. They
were low on cash when they went to a casinoin Monaco, right next to Nice. They took their cash and
bet it on the roulettewheel on the black. While scratching my right elbow
The Power Of Patronage Or The Spoils System
In the nineteenth century the United States government was corrupt with politicians promising
special favors and positions to those persons that helped them to get elected. Most of the US
Presidents of this time wanted to protect this system of patronage because without it, most of them
would not have been elected. Patronage, or The Spoils System, is the system in which government
positions are handed out to supporters that helped the candidate get elected. According to the Oxford
Dictionary of English, Patronage is the power to control appointments to office or the right to
privileges. Most of the Presidents that were elected in the late 1800s should not have been elected
because they didn t win the popular vote. Instead, they were put
Three Pieces Of Advice For Incoming Freshmen Analysis
Three Pieces of Advice for Incoming Freshmen Coming into high school can be very nerve
racking. Everyone makes jokes about you being a freshman, you aren t familiar with the building,
and you don t always have people you know in your classes. Three pieces of advice I have for
incoming freshmen are to keep personal things to yourself, stay out of other people s business, and
don t worry what others think of you. You might have a lot of close friends from middle schoolthat
you are transitioning to high schoolwith, but people change. Be careful who you share your
personal business with. You don t want everyone in school to know what is going on in your life. If
you keep to yourself and everything you do isn t public knowledge you most likely
Adolf Hitler Research Paper
In 1939, Germany had invaded Czechoslovakia and was planning on invading Poland. Hitler knew
that invading Poland meant war with Britain, France, and the Soviet Union, which would have been
difficult to win. To avoid this, Germany and the Soviet Union signed a non aggression pact agreeing
to not take any military action against each other. A secret clause in the Nazi Soviet pact of August
1939 provided for the patrician of Polandbetween Germanyand the Soviet Union(Merridale 72).
Germany and the Soviet Union became allies, deciding to split up their shares of Poland. However,
some people, like cartoonist Daniel Brustlein, did not believe that this relationship would last. The
purpose of this cartoon is to act as a warning for Germany,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Hitler s features are drawn as innocent and almost childlike. This characteristic speaks to the date
of the cartoon. In 1939 Hitler was not seen as a large threat. To some, he was just a crazy
politician. By drawing Hitler in a cute way, Alain can insult Hitler. Also, Alain might be
commenting on Hitler s childlike behavior; Hitler does what he wants without thinking about the
consequences. In contrast to the innocent Hitler, Stalin is very stern. His hand is in a military
pose and he almost looks angry. In the cartoon, Stalin might be angry that Germany betrayed him
by throwing the boomerang. However, in context of the year Germany had not yet done anything
to upset the Soviet Union so this is just a prediction of the future. Hitler, hit on the head by the
boomerang, was not expecting it to come back. He underestimated the strength of the Soviet
Union and it came back to hurt him. A flaw of Hitler s later in the war was that he misjudged the
Soviet Union. Overy says that Hitler believed nothing less than that the Soviet Union could be
defeated in four months (Overy 13). Hitler s belief that the Soviet Union was weak is a flaw that can
be seen even before he decided to invade
Speaker Of The House
The Speaker of the House is mandated by the Constitution. The Speaker is chosen by the majority
party, which has both formal and informal powers, and is second in line to triumph to the
presidency should that office become available. The Speaker is in charge of his party and the
entire House. He or she also serves as the presiding officer of the House of Representatives. The
Speaker of the House fulfills quite a few roles, including representing constituents as a member of
Congress, acting as executive head of the House, making committee assignments, appointing the
party s legislative leaders and party leadership a staff, and serving as leader of the majority political
party in the House. The current Speaker of the House is John Boehner from

Nantahala Lake
Nantahala Lake is located 3000 feet above sea level in the Nantahala National Forest. Its features
include crystal clear water, waterfalls, hiking trails, fishing, lodging, and many more amenities.
The lake is regulated and maintained by Duke Power and it is a major source of hydroelectricity
for the surrounding counties. It was created in 1942 by Nantahala Power to provide electricity for
war efforts. The lake holds 42 miles of shoreline, which makes the waters close to the shore
murky, but as soon as you get out into the middle, it gets very clear! Nantahala Lake releases into
the Nantahala River, creating one of the nation s most known whitewater rivers. When the river is
considered on the rafters and kayakers come to play. The water usually gets released from 8 a.m. to
5 p.m., unless copious amounts of rain or special events are running. This brings many tourists to the
area, and what better place to stay than a cozy cabin lodge tucked back in the hollers surrounding the
beautiful Nantahala Lake?... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Analysis
Problem based learning (PBL), is the using of real world patient problems as the educational
context for teaching medical students basic and clinical sciences, as well as clinical reasoning and
problem solving processes . This week s reading revealed varied positive effects of the PBL on
academic performance, clinical performance, and levels of satisfaction in learning.
Problem based learning is used in many medical schools is found to have several advantages,
including promotes deeper learning, self directed, learner centered, improves team working skills,
and facilitates lifelong learning, on the other hand, the PBL approach has a number of disadvantages,
such as individual learning needs may over ridden by group learning needs, and this approach may
not suit the learning styles of some students.
Application
As a student, I found peer teaching is enjoyable for students and peer teachers. Allowing a students to
take turns between being the teacher and the learner, will achieve benefit from explaining their own
personal understanding of the material to another, and from hearing the same material from the
others understanding or viewpoint. In this model, students spend time summarizing information,
assessing the work or ideas of a peer, and explaining rationales. All of these meaningful activities
promote critical thinking and long term retention
