A Critique Of Low Carbohydrate Diet Essay
The low carbohydrate diet dates back to 1797, when Scottish surgeon John Roll successfully
treated two diabetic Army officers with a low carbohydrate diet, which made the low
carbohydrate, ketogenic diet became the standard treatment for diabetic and obese patients
throughout the 19th century (Morgan 10). Subsequently, there was a rise in demand for low
carbohydrate diet books in 1958, 1967, and 1972, by Dr. Richard Mackarness, Irwin Stillman,
and Dr. Robert Atkins, consecutively, with the latter one received the most widespread
popularity. All of these diets expressed a steady emphasis on a diet with high protein, high
natural fat in replacement of the loss in carbohydrate intake. From the early 2000s, the low
carbohydrate diet has become one of the most popular diets in the United States, with 18% of the
population reportedly used according to HealthDay. Even though Atkins book meets immense
success, it attracts criticism from the medical community ( A critique of Low Carbohydrate 15
23). While having the benefits of a diabetic treatment such as lowering blood sugar and insulin
level low carbohydrate diet has caused cases of hypoglycemia and ketoacidosis, where health
emergencies, even fatal, were recorded. Also, according to MayoClinic.org, the Dietary
Guidelines for Americans recommends a daily carbohydrates intake of 225 325 grams per day, while
most diets allow only 40 120 grams, with the Atkins diet allowing only 20 grams per day for two
weeks. All of this
Children Are An Important Part Of The Continuation Of...
Children are an important part of the continuation of humanity, both as a species and culturally.
However, there are few references, outside of the instances where laws in relation to orphans or
widows or introduced, that discuss children in the Old Testament. There are times where the birth
of a child is mentioned, as is the case when Eve bore Cain in Genesis 4.1. However, there is no
mention of his childhood. Rather, the story continues when he is an adult farmer. The New
Testament includes references to children other than as a reference to genealogy or to celebrate a
birth. These are very important to understanding the shift in tone from the previous books of the
Bible. In Matthew 18, the disciples ask Jesuswho the greatest in the kingdom of heaven will be
(18.1). He calls a child from among them before answering in the following verse. Before
examining the answer, it is work noting that children are present. It is easy to forget when reading
through the previous books that there are children, whether they are the patriarch s, a villager s, or a
servant s, that could be present in many of the scenes depicted. They are not mentioned because their
presence is unimportant to that particular tale. However, here they are important. So important, that
Jesus feels the need to bring one to him. It is also important to note that the text only says that [h]e
called a child (4.2). This child is not identified as male or female, the fact is irrelevant to this
particular story.
Ethical Dilemmas In Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the fifth installment in the Harry Potter series. In this
book J.K. Rowling presents two vastly different characters who have ethical viewpoints that are on
either side of the consequentialist spectrum.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix details the events that occur during Harry s fifth year at
Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This year was bound to be the most difficult yet
because not only does Harry have to worry about Lord Voldemort returning but he also has trouble
convincing other of the impending doom that accompanies Voldemort s arrival. Harry, two friends
Ron and Hermione, along with the Hogwarts Headmaster Professor Albus Dumbledore have spent
the better part of Harry s first four years at Hogwarts not only trying to subdue Voldemort, but also
trying to convince others of what they might soon have to face. Despite the obvious signs of
Voldemort s return, him trying to steal the sorcerer s/philosopher s stone, the opening of the
chamber of secrets, and most recently the death of fellow schoolmate Cedric Diggory the Ministry
of Magic, basically the government of the wizarding world, dismissed them all and gave ridiculous
excuses. This is because Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic, is convinced that Harry and
Dumbledore are lying because he believes that Dumbledore is after his job. Because of Fudge s
suspicion the Ministry decides to appoint one of their own as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts
Barack Obama Impact
Barack Obama has positively impacted our country in a variety of ways. He has put a tremendous
amount of effort towards having a better relationship with Muslims and Russia. In order to
accomplish that, he gave a speech to those people wanting a new relationship and won a Nobel
Peace Prize because of his efforts. In 2009, Barack Obamasigned the Family Smoking Prevention
and Tobacco Act. This law says that they have to have permission from the FDA before releasing
any new tobacco products. The law also improved the amount of warning labels for tobacco
products and got rid of misleading labels on those products. The tax on tobacco was also raised and
the money went towards Children s Health Insurancewhich was a part of the Children s Health
Insurance Authorization Act. During his time of being president, he decreased the... Show more

He s proved to all generations that the color of your skin should not impact what you can or can t
do and proved you don t have to look a certain way to work in the government. Avi Kedia said, it
shows that somebody from a different race can rise up and go against what everyone else says and

Barack Obama ordered special forces travel to Abbottabad, Pakistan to find and capture Osama
Bin Laden. This was a very important day to our country because they had been searching for him
for almost 10 years and finally found him on May second, 2011. He also gave a speech on
September 11, 2016, honoring those whose lives were lost during 9/11. In 2009, Barack Obama
passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. This act gives women the right to sue their employers if
they find out they aren t being paid as much as a man for the same
Military Technological Advances
Advances in military technology have helped the course of history by changing our weapon use
and design of weapons over the course of time. If we still had the same weapons as the 1800 s I have
a feeling our world wouldn t be the same way it is right now. Our military has evolved and grown
into thousands of men and women who are risking their lives everyday to try to make sure our
world and people are safe and no harm comes our way. If our military systems and people still had
the same weapons and ideas of defending people and enemies back then I don t think we would
survive that well, thousands of people would die overtime we would go into battle simply because
of how much our world has changed and evolved over the years. if I could take a

here today because of the lost of a loved one. He lived a brief live where many obstacles were faced.
He held one very close friend. His dear friend Ms. Ariana Escobar, who is going to say a few words
about him.
The preacher leaves the front of the church and waves her forward. She rubs her sweaty palms
together. She takes two deep breaths, putting her left foot out in front of her followed by the right.
She begins walking towards the lone, dark wood casket. Her best friend lied beneath the closed
doors. She makes her way to the front and faces the crowd clothed in mourning clothes. She glances
around the crowd, noticing the red eyes and used tissues. We re all here for one reason. Caleb. He
was my absolute best friend. When I was five years old, I lost everything. I became an orphan and
was taken to the Throneroom Orphanage. My first month there, I noticed Caleb. He kept mostly to
himself but everyone noticed him. During that first month he became my friend and showed me the
ropes of how things worked in the home. He taught me how to protect myself and how to keep
myself together. From that early age until now we ve always been there for one another. We became
each others family. Her voice catches, tears
Progression Of Images And Leitmotif By Carol Ann Duffy
Progression of images/leitmotifs: Duffy establishes light and body parts as the leitmotifs in the poem
to illustrate the joy in motherhood, when a mother can watch her child grow up. The speaker
associates the daughter as a Light gatherer who held a candleworth, glowed in the speaker s hand,
and mirrored the soft lamp, which creates the light imagery. Light drives out darkness which has
connotations of sadness and evilness while light has the connotations of innocence and purity. Light
is also associated with the sun, which the speaker then illustrates that her child is the center of her
world, in which everything else revolves around her child. Light imagery is constant throughout the
poem, demonstrating that the child is a constant brightness and cheerfulness in the speaker s view.

Duffy exaggerates the child s kissed feet glowed as a hyperbole to provide the sense of service for
glorification of the child, demonstrating the speaker s willingness to provide everything the child
needs. Language glittered like a river compares language to a river, explaining how the child had
no difficulty speaking because a river flows smoothly. The simile supports the adolescent stage of
the cycle of life because the child is learning communication skills, which marks the beginning of
independence from the parent as the child no longer relies on the parent as much as in the stage of
infancy. The w alliteration in with, whole, where, and watching creates soft and pleasant sounds that
supports the tenderness of the speaker s tone as though the speaker is lulling the child to sleep. The
tender care for the child showcases a mother s unconditional love that supports the child s
development and protect the child in the most vulnerable state of
The Pit And The Pendulum Summary
The Pit and The Pendulum Subject Matter Brought by Edgar Allan Poe, The Pit and The Pendulum
bring together dreadful sequences of the narrator being sentenced to death by the inquisitors. Black
robed pale faced judges collide with power and they are the inquisitors who had imprisoned the
narrator. Being that these judges are inquisitors, means that the story takes place during the Spanish
Inquisition. During the inquisition time period, being sentences to death means sentenced to
horrible, gruesome, and super torturous death. Upon analysis of this information, the story is set in a
past tense explanation of the torture brought to the narrator by a panel of black robed pale face
judges, which is an illustration of how people suffer a horrendous torture during imprisonment by the
inquisition.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the first incident, the narrator has been shown to be locked in a dungeon cell for
imprisonment. Brought by this, the narrator decides to take a walk inside the cell and quickly is
unbraced upon a deep pit as he trips and falls while walking. As he has come forth to realize, he is
safe as of now because he did not fall into the pit, but now knows how the inquisitors are preparing
to torture him. In the second incident, after awakening from slumber from the first incident, the
narrator then discovers a painting on the ceiling. After noticing this is a painting of Father Time he
soon discovers this is no ordinary painting as the scythe of Father Time has been replaced by a
pendulum that is slowly descending. Pendulum closing in, more attention is brought and now
noticed that it is razor sharp, now knowing another reagent the inquisitors are using as torture
towards the narrator. After much worrying, he has brought together an escape plan to get out of the
bands holding him down, he grabs the meat on the cell floor being
Department Store Industry Analysis Paper
In the United States, department stores have existed as a very large segment of the retailing world.
The industry is rolling towards change and challenge as external influences drive demand setting.
Department Store sales have been steadily dropping and are projected to continue to decline at
about 17% from the year 2011 to 2021. Mintel Academic predicts that salesin this industry are going
to drop in 2017 to $54.3 billion, 8% less than the year 2016 (Mintel Academic). This industry is in
the declining stage of its life cycle, with revenue steadily declining at a rate of 4% over the past five
years until 2017. (IBISWorld). This is largely due to the high level of competition in the industry,
both internally and externally. Wal Mart, Target,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The buyers in this sector are a diversified base of individual consumers serving as the end users.
Buyers are not likely to integrate backwards and thus serve solely as direct customers. The
population that makes up the consumer base is extremely large and high in concentration. The
diversification of the customer population serves as a weak force in the realm of department stores
as purchasing intentions and products offered can be considered universal across the industry.
Individual buyers do not spend enough to have a significant effect on the industry in consideration
of its massive size and total revenue produced. (Marketline) Successful branding is of much
importance where leaders have established strong recognizable brands. Companies are enacting
incentive programs where the consumer is rewarded for loyalty. Programs like this increase
switching costs for buyers further weakening buyer power. An estimated 40% of program
participants select their according retailer over other companies. Target uses a rewards card with
which customers make purchases and receive a 5% discount. (Mintel
The Adoration Of Jenna Fox Research Paper
Imagine a world where parental expectations did not exist for children entirely. Should they really
be in place? While some people may argue that parental expectations may be too much pressure for
offspring, they usually keep children s behavior rational, have an impact on their children and their
future, and goals are usually a source of motivation to do better. First, the reason parental expectation
is set in place, to begin with, is to regulate children and their actions. Second of all, having certain
achievements to meet has a significant impact on children and their future. Lastly, the need to meet
accomplishments set forth by the head(s) of the familyserve as a way to improve on one s self for
children. For these reasons, parental expectations should be made.
To begin with, parental expectations keep children s behavior in check. In The Adoration of Jenna
Fox, by Mary E. Pearson, this point is represented by the character s protagonist, Jenna Fox.
Throughout the majority of the book, Jenna stays well behaved under her parents rule, ... Show more

They keep the behavior of kids in check and keeps them rational, which is traits that can be useful
later on in life. Not only that, they have a positive impact on the future of children, which can be
beneficiary for them in the days to come. Lastly, parental expectations cause motivation and/or
aspiration in children, something that would not be there if it did not exist in the first place. If a
world did truly exist in which parental expectation was never really in place, the people in our
society would be different. They will be more relaxed and will not push themselves to their limit
these people would be ill mannered in society s view. Without parental expectations, society goes in
a backward direction, not
Repticon Essay
For the past ten years, Repticon Reptile and Exotic Animal Conventions have toured America,
traveling to cities displaying a wide gamut of exotic pets with hopes of informing potential owners
about the benefits of owning one (Repticon). Because I have never obtained an affinity for exotic
animals, I was confident Repticon would ensure my uneasiness and feelings of being an outsider. As
I approached the front door, I was greeted by a gigantic, inflatable snakethat welcomed eager
attendees, much like a theater shows previews to excited audiences waiting to see a movie. My
uneasiness immediately set in. Once I entered the open, airy room, I was stamped with a turtle on
my hand. There was no turning back now. The room had no prominent smell (to my surprise) and
was filled with collapsible tables arranged in squares, with each square presenting a different group
or category to participants. For example, some tables displayed actual reptiles, amphibians,
arachnids (yikes!), and anthropods while others focused on selling accessories (water bowls,... Show

The customer, attendees, and participants of Repticon were mostly families: middle class, blue
collar workers with kids. Some participants seemed to be there with their families to provide a
source of entertainment to their kids while others had an obvious obsession or strong fascination
for reptiles. One participant even wore unique pants that had snakes embroidered on the leg.
Other participants wore cowboy hats and torn jeans. I walked past many people who talked to
their pet lizard while holding it on their shoulder with a leash attached to it. This was an
unfamiliar sight to see but I could relate to it in the way that I treat my dog. This made me realize
that a pet is a pet. Whether it is a dog, cat, lizard, or a spider, we can all find joy in nurturing a life
that unconditionally loves
