1. GOT IT! [25 MIN]

Grouped data is data that is organised into groups.

Measures of central tendency

A set of data can be compared with another set of data by making use of the following
measures of central tendency:

 Mean…
The average of a numerical set of data.
𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 𝑡𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑒 𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑 𝑣𝑣𝑣𝑣𝑣𝑣𝑣𝑣𝑣𝑣𝑣𝑣 570
𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀 = = = 28,5
𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡𝑡 𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛 𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑 𝑣𝑣𝑣𝑣𝑣𝑣𝑣𝑣𝑣𝑣𝑣𝑣 20
BUT…
With grouped data, we make use of the estimated mean.
- Firstly, you have to calculate the midpoint of each class interval.
- Secondly, you have to multiply each frequency with each calculated midpoint
- Thirdly, add up the total of the frequency and the total of 𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝐹𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐×𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀

EXAMPLE
Class Interval Frequency Midpoint of class 𝑭𝑭𝑭𝑭𝑭𝑭𝑭𝑭𝑭𝑭𝑭𝑭𝑭𝑭𝑭𝑭𝑭𝑭×𝑴𝑴𝑴𝑴𝑴𝑴𝑴𝑴𝑴𝑴𝑴𝑴𝑴𝑴𝑴𝑴
interval
𝟎𝟎 ≤ 𝒙𝒙 < 𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏 1 0+9 1×4,5 = 𝟒𝟒, 𝟓𝟓
= 4,5
2
𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏 ≤ 𝒙𝒙 < 𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐 5 10 + 19 5×14,5 = 𝟕𝟕𝟕𝟕, 𝟓𝟓
= 14,5
2
𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐 ≤ 𝒙𝒙 < 𝟑𝟑𝟑𝟑 3 20 + 29 3×24,5 = 𝟕𝟕𝟕𝟕, 𝟓𝟓
= 24,5
2
𝟑𝟑𝟑𝟑 ≤ 𝒙𝒙 < 𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒 7 30 + 39 7×34,5 = 𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐, 𝟓𝟓
= 34,5
2
𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒 ≤ 𝒙𝒙 < 𝟓𝟓𝟓𝟓 4 40 + 49 4×44,5 = 𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏
= 44,5
2
Total 20 𝟓𝟓𝟓𝟓𝟓𝟓

 Median class…
The middle position of the set of data. It is important that the data is arranged in
ascending order. Half of the data will lie at position 10 and 11
10+11
∴ 2 = 10,5. 10,5 lies in the class interval 30 ≤ 𝑥𝑥 < 40, which has a midpoint of
34,5.
 Modal class…
The class with the greatest frequency in the set of data. Thus, it will be the class
interval with the most represented data, 30 ≤ 𝑥𝑥 < 40.

The table below represents how much pocket money a group of grade 10 learners receives
in a month.
