LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET in Empowerment Technologies 11
Quarter 4, Week 3
Name of Learner: _____________________________________ Date: ________________
Grade & Section: _____________________________________

Brief Background/Discussion:
Imagine a central hub for all your digital needs – a computer specifically designed to store, manage, and share
data and resources across a network. That's the power of a computer server! Here's a quick rundown of what
goes into setting one up:
1. Why Do You Need One?
The purpose is key. Is it for:
 File Sharing: Centralize documents, photos, music, etc., for easy access by multiple users.
 Web Hosting: Run your own website or applications.
 Email Server: Manage email accounts for your business or group.
 Database Management: Store and organize large amounts of structured data.
 And More! The possibilities are vast.
2. Choosing the Right Hardware:
Think of it as building a powerful PC, but with a server-specific twist:
 Server Type: Tower servers are compact for smaller needs, while rack-mounted servers offer more power for
larger setups.
 Processor (CPU): Needs enough processing power to handle the workload (e.g., multiple users, complex tasks).
 Memory (RAM): Sufficient RAM ensures smooth operation, especially for data-intensive tasks.
 Storage: A combination of HDDs for bulk storage and SSDs for faster performance might be ideal.
 Operating System: Popular options include Windows Server, Linux distributions, or virtualization software like
VMware.

Activity
Server Configuration Challenge
Security Settings: The server needs to be secured! Discuss and propose configurations for user access control,
firewalls, and virus protection on the server.
1. Remote Access: Imagine some employees need to access the server remotely. Discuss how you would enable
secure remote access to the server.
2. Resource Management: Briefly outline strategies for managing storage space and user accounts on the server
to ensure optimal performance.
Wrap-Up & Discussion (10 minutes):
 Recap the key learnings from the activity, including essential server hardware, server OS functionalities, and basic
server configuration considerations.
 Discuss the importance of planning, documentation, and following best practices when setting up a real server.
 Address any unanswered questions or remaining challenges related to server setup.
Optional Extension Activities:
 Research and present on a specific server hardware component or server virtualization technologies.
 Explore online tutorials or simulations for real-world server OS installation processes.
Assessment:
 Participation in group discussions and brainstorming sessions.
 Completeness and accuracy of individual hardware/software selection and server configuration plans.
 Ability to explain the rationale behind chosen configurations and answer questions from peers.
