Strategies for Sustainable Development
Strategy formulation
Country ownership and participation, leadership and initiative in
developing their strategies.
There is enough for everybody’s need, but not for anybody’s greed
- Mahatma Gandhi
(c) mzsengineeringtechnologies 2
Strategies for Sustainable Development
Strategy formulation
Broad consultation, including particularly with the poor and with
civil society, to open up debate on new ideas and information,
expose issues to be addressed, and build consensus and political
support on action.
(c) mzsengineeringtechnologies 3
Strategies for Sustainable Development Strategy formulation
Ensuring sustained beneficial impacts on disadvantaged and
marginalised groups and on future generations.
(c) mzsengineeringtechnologies 4
Strategies for Sustainable Development Strategy formulation
Building on existing strategies and processes, rather than adding
additional ones, to enable convergence and coherence.
A solid analytical basis, taking account also of relevant regional
issues, including a comprehensive review of the present situation and
forecasts of trends and risks.
Integration of economic, social and environmental objectives
through mutually supportive policies and practices and the
management of tradeoffs.
Realistic targets with clear budgetary priorities.
(c) mzsengineeringtechnologies 5
Strategies for Sustainable Development
Capacity development
Strengthening and building on existing country capacity —
public, civil society, and private — as part of the strategy process.

Resistances to the concept
1. Motivation
2. Identification of the problem
3. Literacy and basic education
4. Lack of financial resources
5. War-torn countries or political
influences
6. Natural hazards
7. Government policies
8. Corruption
9. Lack of efforts at municipal levels
(c) mzsengineeringtechnologies 8
Alternative to Sustainable Development
1. Precaution
2. Proportionality
3. Life-cycle approach
4. Prevention
5. Security rule of law
6. Environmental protection
7. Improved markets
8. Agricultural development
9. Community development

Modelling of Issues related to Sustainable Development
1. Conceptual
2. Contextual
3. Academic
4. Geopolitical

Example of Sustainable Development: Solar Energy
Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the Sun that is harnessed
using a range of ever-evolving technologies such as solar heating,
photovoltaic, solar thermal energy, solar architecture, molten salt
power plants and artificial photosynthesis.
(c) mzsengineeringtechnologies 12
Example of Sustainable Development: Solar Energy
Importance of Solar Energy
It is an important source of renewable energy and its technologies
are broadly characterized as either passive solar or active solar
depending on how they capture and distribute solar energy or
convert it into solar power.
Active solar techniques include
the use of photovoltaic systems,
concentrated solar power and solar
water heating to harness the energy.
Passive solar techniques include
orienting a building to the Sun,
selecting materials with favourable
thermal mass or light dispersing
properties, and designing spaces
that naturally circulate air.

Example of Sustainable Development: Solar Energy
Application and uses in fields
Urban Sector Rural Sector
1. Industrial 1. Remote Households
2. Commercial 2. Agriculture
3. Residential 3. Small Scale Entrepreneurships
(c) mzsengineeringtechnologies 14
Example of Sustainable Development: Solar Energy
Application and uses in fields
Residential Application
1. Flat plate collectors – Hot water
2. BIPV- Semi transparent PV windows
3. Rooftop PV systems
4. Solar air conditioning (HVAC)
(c) mzsengineeringtechnologies 15
Example of Sustainable Development: Solar Energy
Application and uses in fields
For un-electrified:
1. Solar lanterns
2. PV powered agricultural pumps
3. Solar cookers and ovens
4. Solar street lighting systems
5. PV-telephone booths
6. Community solar cooking systems
7. Solar food dryers and air heaters
8. Solar inverters
9. PV mobile network towers
(c) mzsengineeringtechnologies 16
Example of Sustainable Development: Solar Energy
Application and uses in fields
10. PV- Vaccine refrigerators-transporting medicines to remote areas
11. Industrial process heat-dairy and other small scale units in
villages
12. Electricity to hospitals and schools in remote regions
13. Standalone systems- for households in the mountainous areas
(c) mzsengineeringtechnologies 17
Example of Sustainable Development: Solar Energy
Implementation and success in fields
Solar steam cooking system implemented for community cooking in
villages
World Largest Solar Steam At Sri Saibaba Sansthan,
Cooking System: Tirupati Shirdi 3000 Meals per day
30000 Meals per day

Example of Sustainable Development: Solar Energy
Application and uses in fields
Goals Satisfied after implementation
of such sustainable approach:
1. Energy Security
2. Employment Generation
3. Emission Reduction
4. Improved Livelihood for Rural
5. Better Water quality and health
6. Agricultural Sector Growth
7. National Economic Growth
(c) mzsengineeringtechnologies 19
Example of Sustainable Development: Solar Energy
Measures identified / Suggested
Measured Suggested:
1. Government national action plan and policy focus for
sustainable development of rural areas.
2. Training and awareness programs in remote areas
3. Providing soft loans/incentives/ subsidies for solar systems
installed in rural areas
4. Mandating PV installations for hot water and process heat in
residential and industrial sectors
5. Setting up demonstrative projects/ systems to display its
benefits
6. Deploy support schemes in collaboration with international
development organisations
7. R&D facilities for efficient and economic technology
innovations
