Form of assessment:

Individual work Group work

For group work assessment which requires members to submit both individual
and group work aspects for the assignment, the work should be submitted as:

Consolidated single document Separately by each member

Write Group No clearly on the cover sheet. Separate key tasks using sub-dividers
and write the name of the person who carried out each key task clearly (with initials
on calculation pad).

Number of assignment copies required:

Student No (SN): ........................................................................................................

Note:
• The coursework emailed to the module leader/tutor is not acceptable.
• You will not get marks for the scheme design unless you attach it with the final
submission and justify that the feedback by the tutor is taken into account.
• Please keep your copy of the coursework, the tutor is not responsible for returning
the electronically submitted work.

Design Brief

Requirements:

1. A new five storey office and underground car park. See Figure 1.
2. The building is to be located on the outskirts of a large city in a landscaped
area.
3. A minimum clear internal height of 3.0m is required to each office floor and
the car park. The finished floor to floor height for the offices is 5.0m and the
car park 4.0m.
4. Four core areas each measuring 5.0m x 5.0m are required internally for stairs,
lifts and services.
5. The columns to the fully glazed elevations are to be at a minimum spacing of
5.0m. The spacing of the internal columns is to suit the underground car park
layout and is to be kept to a minimum.
6. At least 200 car parking spaces are required and each car parking space is to be
5.0m x 2.5m with 6.0m wide circulation aisles.

Imposed Loading:

7. Roof 1.5kN/m²
Floors 5.0kN/m²
Car park 2.5kN/m²

Site

8. The site is located on the outskirts of a large city. Basic wind speed is 40m/s
based on a 3 second gust; the equivalent mean hourly wind speed is 20m/s.

Ground conditions:

9. Ground conditions:

Ground level – 1.0m top soil / fill

1.0m – 5.0m sand and gravel N = 10

5.0m - 9.0m sand and gravel N = 35

Below 9.0m sandstone, characteristic compressive

strength 1500kN/m²

Ground water was encountered at 5.0m below ground level.

Omit from consideration

10. Detail design of stair and lift shaft core.

NOTE: All dimensions are in metres

Assessment Criteria

Your design team is required to produce design of critical structural elements

excluding detailed design of the lift/elevator shafts, stairs and foundations.

Following documents need to be submitted by the specific deadlines. The marks

allocated are indicated in brackets.

• Appendix 1 - A conceptual and scheme design report (individual work): It

should contain appropriate drawings showing clear general layout with span
and height dimensions. The concepts/schemes must be distinct and viable
indicating clearly the design philosophy including key assumptions, functional
framing, load transfer and stability aspects. (20% marks)

• Appendix 2 – Design appraisal of schemes (group work): Following the design

appraisal of the schemes, the group should identify the recommended
structural scheme, giving reasons for their choice. (5% marks)

• For the chosen scheme, the group must produce the deliverables listed
below. The work must be equally split among the group member and submit
the work individually.

▪ Appendix 3 - Detailed design calculations (group work): This should

contain loading, analysis and detailed design calculations for the
selected scheme superstructure. Work to be split equally. (40% marks)

▪ Appendix 4 – Drawings (group work): It must include general

arrangement (structural plans and elevations) drawings and critical
detailed drawings of the main elements. Work to be split equally. (20%
marks)

▪ Appendix 5 – Letter to the client (individual work): After the design

has been completed the client advises you that he wishes to add
landscaping around the building with 1.0m of topsoil on the car park
roof, thus lowering the car park by a further 1.0 m into the ground and
also to landscape the office roof with 0.3m of topsoil. Write a letter to
the Client explaining the implications on your design. (5% marks)

▪ Appendix 6 – Safe construction method statement (individual work):

Prepare a brief method statement for the safe construction of the

6
building and an outline construction programme. Also produce a risk
assessment, and health and safety document for this building. (10%
marks)

Log Book

• Each group is required to keep a Log Book, giving a brief summary of weekly
key activities undertaken by each team member (please use template
provided). The Log Book must be submitted at the back of the Final Report.

Design Data

• The verification of structural viability should be carried out in accordance with

current Eurocodes. Always clearly refer the documents used in support of
calculations (use the Ref. column on the calculation pad to refer to Eurocodes’
clauses used).
• Clearly state the main assumptions used in your calculation, preferably using a
list at the beginning of your calculation. Use calculation sheet template
provided.
• Loading data should be from the relevant design codes and/or using
reasonable assumptions.
