SECTION B: COMPREHENSION
Poverty! Can a rich man who has not tasted poverty know what it means to be poor?
This is doubtful. Can a person who enjoys three square meals every day say what poverty
means? Perhaps, the real meaning comes to light when a man struggles hard to have one
miserable meal in a day. Poverty and hunger are twins, the former always pulls along the
latter wherever she chooses to go.
If you are well-dressed in your best attire, traditional or western and you look naturally
chubby in your dress. You may not understand what poverty means. Nor can you have a true
picture of poverty if you have some fine shirts and pairs of trousers. If you can change from
one wear to another at any time, then you are not poor. A person starts to have a real feeling
of poverty when he does not have any clothes apart from the calico sheet on him to keep
away the cold at night. Can a person who has never slept outside in the open appreciate the
real meaning of homelessness? Can a person who has built his house claim to be poor? In
fact, the really poor man has no roof over his head. For this reason, you will find him under a
bridge, tent or vast open air.
The poor man confronts the world as a loser, a runner-up, and a defeated person. In
every arrangement, interaction and activity involving the pauper and others, the poor man is
regularly reminded of his failure in life. Nobody listens to him nor do they appreciate his
opinions. In most cases, the poor man accepts that he is an underdog.
Even the poor man’s child is not spared. His child is hungry in body and mind. The poor
man does not have the resources to send his child to school. Even where education is free,
the poor man’s child is physically weak to attend school because of a lack of proper
nourishment. He even finds it difficult to understand the concept taught him. For these
reasons, the poor man’s child drops out of school.
Apart from the above, the poor man is an easy target for diseases because he feeds on
poor food. That is why most poor countries have a short life expectancy while the rich
countries have a long life expectancy.
