CREATING PROGRESS BY
TAILOR-MADE SOLUTIONS
Scana optimises every propulsion configuration to the specific
vessel’s running condition. The shipowner focuses strongly on operating
costs. A tailor-made design to a vessel’s propulsion system can yield great
savings. A conventional propulsion system can be the best solution for one
vessel type, while others will benefit from a diesel-electric, hybrid or a twin
engine solution. Scana propulsion systems can be adapted to most types
of medium and high speed engines. The propeller range fits any slow speed
engine in a direct drive system.

6
The varying working conditions of a vessel require flexible solutions in order to execute all tasks efficiently. The
goal is therefore that the ship’s total operating system is optimised to the ship’s actual service profile. With different
configurations of engines and gearboxes, combined with propellers and tunnel thrusters,,
it is possible to achieve required flexibility, efficiency and economy.
y.

DIESEL-MECHANICAL PROPULSION
These are systems at a reasonable price level with a simplistic
solution, suitable to all ship types with a narrow service profile.
Typical ships are cargo vessels, tankers and ferries. The system
can be driven by either a constant or slightly varying engine rpm.
Simultaneous running of an el-generator with fixed or floating
frequency is possible by a PTO.

This mechanical gear solution with PTO/PTI is mainly used in ships with

diesel engine and generator, both working at constant speed, but with engine
need for widely different levels of propulsion power.

The gearbox is arranged to enable several ways of power flow distribution.

• Diesel power distributed partly to the propeller at the selected optimum

propeller speed, and partly to the generator running at constant speed.

DIESEL-ELECTRIC PROPULSION
This is a flexible and efficient solution for a wide and varied
range in propulsion power. The propeller is driven by one or
more electric motors via a reduction gearbox. The power is
delivered from the ship’s electric supply system. The most
efficient solution is achieved through variable rpm from one or
more of the electric motors, to ensure that the propeller has
optimised working conditions in the entire power range.

OPTIMUM PROPELLER EFFICIENCY
Scana serves a large variety of vessel applications. There is a continuing
demand for propeller designs to be optimised in order to achieve the
highest energy efficiency. All Scana propeller configurations are designed
for the particular ship. Tailor-made blade design ensures optimum propeller
efficiency with lowest possible vibration and noise levels. The use of modern
computer software ensures acceptable cavitation levels.

10
HYDRODYNAMIC DESIGN
Both CP- and FP-propellers are tailor-made to the particular vessel. Scana
bases its hydrodynamic propeller design on calculation methods from the latest
hydrodynamic theories and tank test results. The propeller blade data, such as
diameter, pitch, rpm, skew and load distribution, are always carefully selected
to give the best solution with respect to both efficiency and noise/vibration
characteristics. The blades are machined, polished and statically balanced,
according to the tolerance requirements of ISO 484 class l. Adaptations to other
class requirements can be carried out upon request. Scana propellers can be

CUSTOMISED REDUCTION
GEARBOXES
Scana has gained vast experience as a gearbox designer and manufacturer
since the early 1960s. Through being part of the Norwegian maritime cluster,
we have contributed to the definition and production of highly advanced
offshore vessels. The close relationship between Scana, ship owners and
class societies has led to the wide range of gear models and configurations
that makes our assortment one of the most extensive in the market.

12
Scana offers configurations from single-mode transmission systems to advanced systems, customised for specialised
vessels with a high number of operational modes. Stringent safety regulations and environmental concerns are in focus
when designing a system for any type of ship, to ensure cost efficiency and reliability.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES
All Scana gear designs are based on the gearhouse and PTO parts are
standardised in modules giving the unique flexibility to configure the gearbox
to each customer’s requirements. All gearboxes are designed in 3D and both
FEM and FMEA analysed in order to secure strength and reliability.

SOFTCLUTCH ®
The unique PLC-controlled Scana SOFTCLUTCH® reduces the large torque
peaks which may occur in connection with clutch engagements in today’s
complex propulsion system. Hydraulically operated wet plate multi-disc clutch
allows for engagement at full engine speed with zero propeller pitch.

WIDE RANGE OF PTO/PTI UNITS

On all gearboxes without an integrated PTO/PTI solution it is possible to
choose amongst a wide range of PTO/PTI modules which may be connected
to the main gearbox. The PTO/PTI modules are selected by definition of the
function of the gearbox and the propulsion system, and might be primary or
secondary driven with or without integrated clutch solutions for fully automatic
operation. Our two-step PTO/PTI solutions are available for special purpose
vessels.

COMPLETE TUNNEL
THRUSTER SYSTEMS
Scana has, since the early 1970’s, manufactured with controllable (CPT)
and fixed pitch propeller (FPT). More than a thousand transverse thrusters
in the power range from 100 to 3500 kW have been delivered to different
types and sizes of seagoing vessels. Each delivery is individual and
optimised to meet customers’ requirements. Maximum thrust and efficiency,
at minimum noise and vibration level, have been the design parameters.
This is highly environmentally-friendly, as the thrusters can operate on
biodegradable oil, eliminating any risk to the environment.

16
THE MAIN ADVANTAGES OF SCANA TUNNEL THRUSTERS
• Compact design reduces the length of thrusters and allows for mounting in
narrow hulls
• Special blade design to avoid cavitation and reduce noise and vibration
• Shaft and pinion are placed on high quality roller bearings with long
lifetime
• High quality Cyclo-Palloid bevel gears made by using an HPG method
• High quality shaft seals protect against oil leakage
• Monitoring of sealing condition
• Hub design facilitates disassembling of the blade in a horizontal position
• Possibility of replacing a blade under water on a trimmed vessel without Cross-section of a CPT type tunnel

emptying oil from thruster thruster with controllable pitch

• Same type of oil is used in all thruster hydraulic systems propellers and bevel gear.

DRIVE SYSTEM
The standard drive system is a class-certified asynchronous, 3-phase,
squirrel cage motor in marine execution. Voltage, frequency, duty class,
protection degree and insulation classes are designed according to the customer’s
requirements. Motor windings are equipped with temperature sensors and anti-
condensation heaters. An autotransformer start is included as a recommended
solution. Other starting systems (DOL, star/delta, softstarter) are also available.
The tunnel thrusters can also be driven by hydraulic motors or diesel engines.

REMOTE CONTROL SYSTEM

The control system is designed for propeller pitch control, control and supervision of
hydraulic system operations and control of motor start-up and supervision of a driving
system operation. The control system is interfaced to the following ship systems:
• Power plant management system
• Ship’s alarm system
• Voyage Data Recording system
• Joystick/DP system (option)

TUNNEL
The welded structure and an anti-cavitation ring made of stainless
steel are mounted inside a tunnel in the propeller blade area. The tunnel
is equipped with radial and horizontal ribs for welding to the ship’s hull
structure. The bracket for an electric motor is a separate entity, and
is mounted to the tunnel. Tunnels are delivered in standard lengths.

Extra lengths, additional ribs and control panels, and other interfacing can
be delivered upon request.

17
SCANA REMOTE
CONTROL SYSTEMS
Scana’s control systems are designed to suit most vessel types, from fast
ferries and yachts to fishing boats, cargo- and offshore supply vessels. Our
products incorporate the latest microprocessor technology and are developed
based upon our extensive experience. The remote control systems are
available as part of an integrated system or as a stand-alone unit.
