American Slang and Conversation: Part I

Screw up (verb) To do something badly / make a mistake. Example: I really screwed up that test today. I didnt study at all last night. Hottie (noun) A very attractive person. Hot (adjective) Very attractive. Example: Thats your boyfriend? Hes such a hottie. (Or Hes so hot.) Hang out (verb) To spend time with someone. Example: Im hanging out with Charlie at the mall. 24/7 (adjective) All the time, constantly. (Literally means 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.) Example: Im so tired; all I do is work 24/7. Make out (verb) To kiss (for a long time). Example: I want to make out with her in the corner, but her mom is watching! That sucks / it sucks (expression of sympathy or regret) Something that is bad or unfortunate Example: It sucks that I have to leave the party so early. Chill (verb or adjective) To relax (verb) or cool/relaxed/not stressed (adjective) Example: Im just going to chill for a while. / I love Emily; shes so chill.

Note: Can also be used as a synonym for cool, ie. Thats chill, man. Awkward (adjective) Uncomfortable, without style (sem jeito), strange. Example: Well, that conversation was awkward. / I dont want to talk to him, hes always so awkward. Bromance (noun) Close friendship between men, like brothers. Literally: A mixture of the words brother and romance. Example: I love the bromance that those two guys have. Shot (noun) A try, an attempt. Example: Give it another shot. = Try it again. / Ill take a shot at it. = Ill try.

In conversation Words and sounds to use to show youre listening! Listen/Agree Mm-hmm. Right. Yeah / Yep / Yup Uh-huh. I know. Sympathize No way! Seriously? Wow. Jeez. Oh my god! Oh no! Really? Exclamations Awesome! Nice. Sweet. Sick.

Thats great. Yay! Fantastic! Cool.
