THE MOUNT TIMES

Senior Marni OShea Takes a Look Back

By MARIO SCIPIONI Sports Editor
It is truly great when a schools athletic program has an athlete who has done it all. The College of Mount Saint Vincent had that athlete for the past four years in senior Marni OShea. In her time at CMSV, OShea played two seasons of soccer, basketball, and volleyball, and four seasons of softball. Playing multiple sports was nothing new for the White Plains, New York native. She came into the program with a lot of experience and promise, as she was a three-sport athlete at her high school, Our Lady of Victory Academy in Dobbs Ferry, New York. There was no hesitation in her mind to play all three sports in college as well as take on a new one. OShea always found ways to contribute to the success of her teams. She had more of a minor role with the volleyball and basketball teams, but still delivered when needed. Her junior year was her first time playing soccer, but she got the hang of it quickly. She became a leader of the team, earning a great amount of playing time and starting in 25 out of 30 games in two seasons. OShea would find her best performances in softball, where she was one of the teams top batters every year and played great defense. She was also named Skyline Conference Player of the Week several times. With all of these statistics and great accomplishments, one must wonder what her favorite moment was. Many Marni OShea during her time as a slugger for the softball team. would guess it would be something like Its definitely brought me out The senior says she would do it making her first basket or hitting four home runs in a season, which she has of my shell more I think, said all over again if she could. It was so much fun. I met so done twice. The answer should surprise OShea. Its given me a bit more confidence in myself just because many different people. Its just and humor many. During a soccer game, I was my abilities improved in sports and been a really great experience to taken out from behind. Somebody I guess making more friends kind be involved in so many things. To the returning CMSV athletes, took me out from behind and I like of gave me more confidence. As she looks back at the past she has some words of wisdom. smashed onto the floor and my back four years, she has a few people to Appreciate the time that you really hurt and I was just like Wow thank. For example, she credits her have to play a sport because after that was so cool! said OShea. soccer coaches in her junior year four years, sometimes the level I never got to do that in any sport for being very motivational and of competition is over for a lot of before. That was really fun. making her want to play the sport people. Playing all these sports has done and get better everyday. Of course, Congratulations to Marni for more than allow OShea to show her she could never forget her biggest four excellent years as a Dolphin, skills to her peers. Through CMSV fans, her grandmother and father, and best of luck to her in her future athletics, she found it easier to enjoy her who have made sure they see her at endeavors! college experience. just about every game.

Wrestling Grapples its Way to the Mount

By COLBY LANDEEN Staff Writer
Many students on campus may have heard reports about a new sport being offered in the fall, and it appears that this information is true. Starting next fall there will be a wrestling team on campus for the first time ever at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. However, some students may wonder why we have added a sport to the already full list that our school offers. Also, with limited space in our sports facilities others may wonder where a wrestling team would fit in. To find out more about this developing team, I sat down with Athletic Director Jay Butler. He informed me that the school had been planning to create a wrestling team long before he arrived. In the interview regarding the team, Butler said, Our college had the intention of trying to increase programs and find sports that are out there that we have the facilities for; we dont necessarily have a need or desire to create more outdoor sports because we dont have fields to provide for them. With no possibility of building outside fields, and the availability of two indoor gymnasiums, wrestling seems to have been the perfect choice for our school. Wrestling is also a sport that seems to be popular among college athletes and, according to Mr. Butler, will attract well-rounded students to our school. Mr. Butler claimed, It can be a sport that will attract a good number of students and usually wrestling students historically have a history of being good students because they have to have a very high level of self-motivation. An important aspect to having a team is having opponents, and there are many other Division-III colleges in our area that also have wrestling programs. Mr. Butler explained, We are fortunate enough that we do have a good number of Division

III colleges within a 200 mile radius, so the level of us being able to put together a competitive schedule was possible. Some teams that have wrestling programs and that we will face next semester are Hunter College and NYU. One very appealing detail about our new wrestling team will be their competition schedule. Butler explained that a major factor in the creation of the wrestling team was the fact that competitions are held on weekends: Theyll have less missed academic time because most of their competitions will be on weekends, so it fit into the model of academics being a component to the whole experience and not taking away from the experience. This means that members of the wrestling team will have more time during the week to spend on academic work. What is a team without a coach? Hired in the spring of last year, new

coach Ryan Cooley, a wrestler and graduate from NYU, has already scheduled two tournaments to take place next semester. His goal was to spend the whole year developing the team and recruiting new students. Currently, there are four incoming freshman committed to the team while there are another 25 who expressed interest in the program but have not yet made a decision. On the future of the team, Mr. Butler said: Our goal in the first year was to have anywhere from fifteen to twenty active wrestlers but the eventual goal is to have anywhere from thirty to thirty-five on the roster and that is the normal roster for a wrestling program. With a young squad and a motivated coach, the College of Mount Saint Vincents wrestling team seems to be headed for success.
