Residential Schools: A Legacy of Historical Globalization 1) Discussion of the different perspectives on the issue of residential schools You need

to create two accounts of residential school. Your accounts need to accurately represent the different perspectives on the issue. Specifically, one account needs to be from the point of view of a First Nations citizen who either attended a school or had a loved one at a school. The other account needs to be from the perspective of someone who was part of the dominant culture. Your account can be written as -a diary entry -a letter to someone (e.g. friend, a staff member in a residential school, a government official, the local newspaper) -Accurate representation of the perspective youve chosen (remember, you must represent both sides of the issue, one in each account) -Discussion of how you feel about residential schools. You must present arguments that reflect why you feel the way that you do. -Evidence to support the arguments you have given. -Arguments (explained, persuasive, convincing) -Evidence (relevant, accurate, linked to the argument) -Communication (organization, spelling, grammar, syntax) 15 marks x 2 perspectives = /5 marks /5 marks /5 marks) /30 marks

2) Reaction to the Governments Decision to Compensate Residential School Survivors Editorials appear in newspapers, magazines, etc. and are designed to persuade readers of the writers perspective. Your job is to write an editorial about the Canadian governments decision to provide compensation to survivors of residential schools. Remember, you are trying to persuade your readers to see things the way that you do.

Arguments (convincing, developed, explained) Evidence (relevant, accurate, linked to arguments) Communication (spelling, grammar, syntax)

*Note: Your editorial will be posted in a forum in class and responded to by your peers. 3) Response to the editorial of two peers In class you will be responsible for choosing two editorials with which you disagree and write a letter to the editor response (i.e. a formal reply of about 200 words). 4) Visual Representation of Your Learning You need to create a visual representation of what you have learned about residential schools as an example of a legacy of historical globalization. -Use of symbols -Color choice -Shape -Use of space /30 marks

5) Written Explanation of the Visual Because you will be using symbolism, viewers may not immediately understand what you are intending to communicate. In order to make sure that your message is clearly understood, you will be required to write an explanation of your visual. Remember, everything that you do should be done for a reason. This explanation will allow you to explain your reasons. /10 marks Total = /100 marks

NOTE: Sections 1, 2 and 3 must be done individually. However, sections 4 and 5 (the visual) may be done in a group of up to 3 people. If you choose to work in a group, you must choose people you trust and with whom you can meet outside of class. If the visual is done by a group all members of the group will receive the same grade.
