Assignment 2 (Spring 2012) : (Solution)

The document provides solutions to two circuit analysis problems. 1) It uses nodal analysis to find the current I1 in a circuit with two nodes. It derives two equations and solves them simultaneously to find I1 = 0.543 mA. 2) It uses mesh analysis to find the currents in all three meshes of a second circuit. It derives the mesh equations, solves them to find the three mesh currents as I1 = 0.77 A, I2 = -0.77 A, and I3 = 2 A. It also lists the currents through each resistor.

Assignment 2(Spring 2012)

(Solution)
Circuit Theory (Phy301) Marks: 20 th Due Date: 27 April, 2012 Q 1: Use nodal analysis to find I1 in the network given below. Identify and label each node otherwise you will lose your marks.

Sol: Labeling for node and super node

Since there exists a voltage source between two nodes, so we write constraint equation and super node equation.

Constra intequ .for super nodeis v1 v2 = 8....... . q e (1) Writting super nodeequ .we have v1 3 v1 v2+ 4 v2 + + + = 0 6 9 5 3 15(v 1 3) +10v 1+ 18(v 2+ 4) 30v 2 + =0 90 15(v 1 3) +10v 1+ 18(v 2+ 4) 30v= 0 + 2 15v 1 45 +10v1+ 18v 2+ 72 30v= 0 + 2 25v 1 +48v 2 + 27= 0 25v 1 + 48v2 = 27.......... .e q (2) Multiplyinging . q by(25) we get e (1) 25v 1 25 v 2 = 200........ .e(3) q solve e.q (2) and (3) simaltanously 25v 1 25 v 2 = 200 25v 1 48v 2 m = 27 73v 2 = 227 227 73 V2 = 3.11 V v2 = putting the value of v 2 q. (1) ine v1 + 3.11= 8 v1 =8 3.11

V = 4.89 V 1
Since we haveto calculate the valueof I and we know V1 = I1R 4.89 =(9 k) I 1 I1 = 4.89 9k

I1 = 0.543 mA

Q 2: Identify and label each mesh in given below circuit. Use Loop/Mesh analysis to find currents through all loops also find out current through each resistance.

Solution:
Labeling the circuit for meshes we have

There are three meshes in this problem. Current for mesh 3 is already given.

So I 3 = 2 Amps Now By writing the KVL equation for other mesh we can find current throw mesh 1 and mesh 2. Mesh 1 KVL Equation: 10 + (7) I 1 + 3( I 1 I 2 ) = 0 10 + 7 I 1 + 3I 1 3I 2 = 0 10 I 1 3I 2 = 10 (1)

Mesh 2 KVL Equations: 3( I 2 I1 ) + (2) I 2 + 5( I2 I3 ) = 0 3I 2 3I1 + 2 I 2 + 5 I2 5 I3 = 0 10 I 2 3I1 5 I3 = 0 10 I 2 3I1 5(2) = 0 10 I 2 3I1 + 10 = 0 3I1 + 10 I 2 = 10 (2)

Multiply Eq(1) by 3 and Eq. (2) by 10 30 I 1 9 I 2 = 30 30 I 1 100 I 2 = 100 91I 2 = 70 70 91 I 2 =-0.77A Now by putting the value of I2 in Eq. 2 I2 = 3I1 + 10(0.77) = 10 3I1 7.7 = 10 3I1 = 10 + 7.7 3I1 = 2.3 I1 = 2.3 3

I = 0.77 Amps 1
Mes1 Current is the current flowing through 7 so Current through 7 = 0.77 Amps Current through 3 Since current I1 and I2 are flowing through 3, so we have Currentt hrough 3 = I1 I 2 = 0.77 ( 0.77) = 0.77 + 0.77 = 1.54 A Mes2 Current is the current flowing through 2 so current through 2 = 0.76 Amps Current through 5 Since current I2 and I3 are flowing through 5, so we have Currentt hrough 5 = I 2 I3 = 0.77 ( 2) = 0.77 + 2 = 1.23 A So

Mes1 Current = I 1 = 0.77 A Mes2 Current = I 2 = 0.77 A Mes1 Current = I 3 = 2 A
