TOP 10 BOOKS FOR STUDENTS IN APRIL

1. Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

Thats All Folks

Well, that about does it for this year. I think it has been a pretty successful year in the library. Now is the time when we look back on the year and wonder whether weve made any progress. This year in the library we had a total circulation of 7,795. Thats a bit short of what weve had the last couple of years. Im not sure if I have a satisfactory reason why this might be. The top book for the year was Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. It was checked out 49 times this year. The Hunger Games and The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan were tied for second with 34 circulations. 8th grade in terms of circulation. 8th grade checked out just over 2000 times and the 7th grade more than doubled that with 4,444 circulations. Ill wait to reveal the top patrons when I give awards at the end of the year. Finally, thanks for all your help in the library and helping to improve literacy in the building. Lets do some more work next year. Dont forget to e-mail me to participate in the adult summer reading program. You can find old issues of the newsletter here. http:// westfieldmiddlepolicies.blogspot.com/

What Im Reading Now

The Influencing Machine by Brooke Gladstone is a difficult one to recommend. I loved this book, but I know that many people would take one look at it and dismiss it out of hand. Yes, it is written as a comic book, but this is the best history of the impact of media that Ive read. Starting with press releases in Caesars Rome, Gladstone discusses our usually uneasy relationship with media and journalism. She follows this arc through history to where weve ended up today, and she even speculates about some potential future interactions that might come to pass in the next few decades. Absolutely fascinating and engaging. The other book that Im reading is The Tigers Wife by Tea Obreht. This is our book club book for May. It was a National Book Award Nominee last year. Its about a woman in a Balkan country who is trying to unravel interconnected stories about her beloved grandfather after his death.

New Additions This is not actually a new book, but I thought with ISTEP and NWEA it was a timely book to talk about. This series from ABDO Publishing Company is pretty good. They present arguments for and against an issue and give a good thumbnail history of the topic. This particular

Curriculum Connection
Here are some things coming soon or available now in the library that you may find useful for your class.

Social Studies Black & White: A look at the clash between white and black in Birmingham, Alabama through the Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth and Bull Connor. Math The Book of Time. This is a very cool book that explores time from a scientific and historical perspective.

Related Arts Wideness & Wonder: This is a short biography of Georgia OKeefe with great illustrations that track her progress as an artist. Science Losing Our Cool: Asks questions about the sustainability of indoor climate control. Language Arts The News Never Stops: This is a very basic introduction to news media, how they operate, who they are,
and the tools they use. Although for my money, Id probably just use The Influencing Machine that I talked about on page 1 of this newsletter.

Technobrarian
Cleverbot Okay, this might make me officially beyond any redemption, but I love this. This site is essentially chatting with a robot. How cool is that! Cleverbot learns by having conversations with people. It started knowing nothing. Then someone said hello to it and it stored that in its vocabulary, so it had a vocabulary of one world. The more you talk to it the more it know and converses with you. Its now had millions of conversations and is more than happy to talk to you. Very entertaining. Not very useful but entertaining. Duck Duck Go

still the highest delight. He who has once known its satisfactions is provided with a resource against

calamity. -Ralph Thanks to Joe Stemnock for this one. This is a search engine that Waldo Emerson doesnt allow your activity to be tracked. If youre not comfortable with all of the weird things that Google does with data, you may want to check this out.
