Arman in his early fortes, neither fat nor gaunt, neither hand-
some nor homely. He weary tweeds, smokes @ pipe, carries
Jomrimmed glasses, Although he is moving into middle age,
his dress andl his manner would suggest a man younger:

A-man in his late thirties, not poorly dressed, but carelessly.
What eas once a trim and lightly muscled body has begun to
40 to fat; and while he is no longer handsome, itis evident that
he once was. His fal from physical grace should not suggest
debauchery; he has, to come closest to it, a great weariness
THE SCENE
Its Central Park; a Sunday afternoon in summer; the present.
There are 1wo park benches, one toward either side of the
stage; they both face the audience. Behind them: foliage, trees,
sky, At the beginning, Peter is seated on one of the benches.
‘As the curtain rises, peen is seated on the bench stage-right. He
is roading a book. He stops reading, cleans his glasses, goes back
to reading, yenny enters.)

Tye been to the zoo. (ern doesn't notice) 1 said, I've been to the zoo.
MISTER, I'VE BEEN TO THE Z00!
PETER,
Hm? ,.. What? ... 'm sorry, were you talking to me?
jenny
went to the zoo, and then I walked until I came here. Have I been walk-
north?
even (Puzzled)
Norh? Why...1... 1 think so. Let me see
: Jenny
(Potsting past the audience) Is that Fifth Averie?
peren
Why yes: yes, iti
Jenny
And what is that cross street there: that one, to the right?
PETER
‘Thal? Oh, thats Seventy-fourth Street,
yenay
And the zoo is around Sisty-fith Street; so, I've been walking north,
PETE
(Anaious to get back to his reading) Yes; it would soem so.
Jenny
Gool old north,
PETER
(Ligatly, by reflet) Ha, ha.
