Figure 1. ASSETS Raw Data. A Partial Display of Raw Data in The ASSET Table of A Database

Raw data refers to unprocessed facts and figures directly from transactions, while information results from analyzing and interpreting raw data to reveal meaningful insights. For example, asset and customer transaction data stored in database tables are raw data, but generating reports from this data to analyze retired assets, product sales, or customer service provides useful information. Information systems play an important role in transforming raw data into meaningful information through processes like summarization and analysis to support decision making.

Data are raw unorganized facts that have not been processed to reveal their true meaning.

Furthermore, raw data is actual transaction collected data that have not been yet processed. In contrast, information is the result of processed raw data to reveals its meaning. A raw data example is asset raw data stored in an ASSETS table as shown in figure 1 below.

Figure 1. ASSETS Raw Data. A partial display of raw data in the ASSET table of a database.

On the other hand, the same asset raw data stored in the ASSETS table becomes information when used in a report, which gives meaningful information about the assets reason retired or quantity of assets retired as depicted in figure 2 below.

Figure 2. Assets Retired Information. A partial display of information of a report from processed data from the ASSETS table depicted in Figure 1 above.

Another raw data example is customer transaction information stored in a CUST_TRANSACTION table as shown in figure 3 below.

Figure 3. CUST_TRANSACTION Raw Data. A partial display of raw data in the CUST_TRANSACTION table of a database. These raw data becomes information when the customer transaction raw data is used in a report that analyses product sales or sales by customer or what employee serviced the

customer by running the order. Furthermore, when raw data is analyzed, summarized, or tabulated it becomes useful information that can be in the form of a properly formatted report or some other medium for the purpose of decision making as shown in figure 4 below. Information is either used to replenish a stock item or to analyze gross monthly sales or to project sales trends or to determine the amount of total sales or the total quantity of products sold. Raw data is real time transaction stored information, where information is born from raw data. It is important to denote that Information Systems have a lot to do with these raw data transformations because information systems require raw data as its main source for generating information. Information plays a unique role in information systems because without it, information systems would not be at the top of decision making support list for top-management in any organization.

Figure 4. Customer Transactions Information. A display of information of a report from processed data from the CUST_TRANSACTIONS table depicted in Figure 3 above. In conclusion, raw data depends on database transactions, but information depends on raw data. Information would not exist without the existence of raw data, but raw data can exist without information. At the end, information systems have a lot to do with these raw data transformations, but yet information depends on raw data collection.
