It comprised of an objective paper comprising maths, english, logical reasoning and general knowledge. The written paper comprised of letter writing and precise writing. After a long wait of 7 months results were announced and I was shortlisted for interview. On 12th jan 11 AM I was called for interview to SBI Headquarters, hyderabad. I reached their campus around 10:30. It was a sprawling campus resembling a mini hitech city. A total of 18 people were called for interview. I had to wait for over two hours to get my document verified. After which, they provided us lunch coupons and asked us to have lunch at their officers mess. After a quick meal, we were taken to a conference hall for group discussion. Again we were made to wait for another 2 hours as interviewers were busy interviewing people from morning batch. The conference hall was huge with state of art equipments. All of us were provided with a table mic. It was more a test on public speaking than a group discussion, as the format allowed no scope for countering others points. Everyone were given 2 minutes to talk on topic in 1st round and another 1 minute to conclude in 2nd round. The topic given was villages in India are its strengths or weaknesses . I said villages were once a strength and now have become our weakness and gave a few suggestions to convert our weakness into stength. After group discussion, the interviews started I was number 4 on list and hence didnt have to wait for long . The interview board comprised of 4 old men. Unlike a traditional interview setting, this room had sofas on four corners of room and each was seated in one corner. I was made to sit on a chair in middle of the room. Top 10 MISTAKES Which Candidates Do at an Interview MISTAKE No. 1 Timing Not reaching the interview venue on time This simply creates anxiety and nervousness and the half battle is lost even before the actual thing begins. MISTAKE No. 2 Not being dressed up properly (Dressing up for the interviews has been explained HERE). As I have wrote often that There is no second chance to make the first impression MISTAKE No. 3 Comfort Level Not being able to make yourself normal prior to entering the interview room. 48% of the candidates are feeling very thirsty or too hungry at this time so do remember to have a normal breakfast and carry a bottle of water with you. (Although you are supplied with snacks, water and lunch etc over there, but, if it is with you, you would be just ok). You cant expect to have a marvelous interview when your throat is simply dry. Secondly Looking at other candidates and comparing them to you is also something to be avoided. MISTAKE No. 4 Entry 70% of the candidates dont know about how to enter the interview room. Wait for the next post in which this aspect is going to be dealt in detail MISTAKE No. 5 Non Utilization of first 40 Seconds of the Interview Whether to hire or not to hire a candidate is decided normally in first 40 seconds of the interview only, rest is just a formality. Not being able to leave a mark in first 40 seconds, almost throws you out of the race. MISTAKE No. 6 Not being able to say I Dont Know Its not too hard to say I Dont know Interviewers are more experienced than you, hence be honest, instead of telling anything you are not sure of, its better to admit that you dont know. Remember To enter is human and to admit is Super Human MISTAKE No. 7 Trying to show knowledge by being too descriptive. Candidates think that if they are fully aware of the topic asked in question then they must show their knowledge to the interviewers. Or trying to show influence by answers like I am holding this degree from this college and my father is holding this position, my uncle is this my elder brother is this. If they have asked about you then be specific and dont open the Kundli of your family unless they have asked to do so. Its a wrong practice; no one is interested in your knowledge over there. That has already been proved at the written examination. Be as specific as you can. MISTAKE No. 8 Non Aware of how to deal with Blanks Blanks are the period of around a few seconds which may extend upto half a minute in which interviewers dont ask you anything but they are talking to each other. Your reaction at this time is of prime importance. Dont start looking at the room or dont start counting the number of lights or fans installed in the room. Be calm and cool. MISTAKE No. 9 Not being able to divert the interview in your strength areas. A majority of candidates are not able divert the flow of questions towards the areas of their strength. Thus they become an easy target and get nervous. Read here about answering to questions like Why do you want to choose banking as a career? Also, If you are holding a professional degree which is not related to banking, please also read, How to answer a career change here MISTAKE No. 10. No Finishing Touch Exactly like the first impression, this is also too much needed. Even if you are selected, you may seldom meet the interviewers again in your life, give a finishing touch to the interview, so that after you leave, they must discuss about your personality. Pleas e find below my interview experience at Union Bank of India. I hope it will help bank PO as pirants in s ome ways . My education : BE + MBA currently working as a PO in an S BI s pons ored RRB. Interview location : Mumbai Firs t thing to be noted is that UBI people were in has te to wind up all interviews . Mos t of the interviews held before mine hardly las ted for more than 5 minutes . In few cas es , they merely as ked candidates 'tell me about yours elf' and after getting ans wer, replied, "ok you may go now." My turn was at 12 pm and I reached the venue at 11:20 am. Document
verification proces s went on for few minutes and my turn came around 12:15 pm. I entered the room, there were three members . (1 of them was an IAS officer, as per other candidates ) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------S o Mr.Jos hi, you're coming from Gujarat. Good. Pleas e have a s eat. Me : Yes S ir. I am from Gujarat. Thank you. One of the pers ons took my form in hand and as ked. S o Jos hi tell me, why have you taken up MBA Marketing after Engineering? Me : S ir when I was on the verge of completion of Engineering, I realized that if I purs ue pos t graduation in management after Engineering, it would help me in getting more divers ified job profiles and it would als o help me grow fas ter in my profes s ional life. Interviewer : Okay. But why did you opt for Marketing? Me : S ir, I have fair communication s kills and public dealing s kills . Als o Marketing is an ever green filed which helps you in almos t every s ector you work with. Therefore I chos e Marketing as my s pecialization in pos t graduation. Interviewer : Did you take up any as s ignments after Engineering? Come on, you mus t have got s ome good opportunities after Engineering. Me : S ir, I was very s ure about purs uing PG in Management. Therefore I focus ed on its entrance exams and did not go for technical jobs . Interviewer : But you've mentioned in your form that you've worked with a manufacturing firm. Me : S ir, I joined that job after MBA., not after BE. It was n't a technical job and I was into Marketing Communication department. Interviewer : Oh yes yes . S orry I mis unders tood. S o, what do you do at pres ent? Me : At pres ent, I have been working with S auras htra Gramin Bank, which is an RRB s pons ored by S tate Bank of India as a Probationary Officer. Interviewer : S o you're already a bank PO. S ince how long have you been working with RRB? Me : S ir, I have recently joined RRB. I am about to complete 2 months . Interviewer : S ince you are a PO s ince 2 months , you mus t be aware about how a bank works . I mean, its bas ic functions . Me : Yes S ir, I have tried to learn as much as pos s ible about bank's general functions in thes e two months Interviewer : But dear, you are already into JMGS S cale - 1. What is the rationale in joining UBI? Me : S ir as you know, RRBs are the extended arms of various nationalized banks . They dedicatedly work for agriculture financing and to accomplis h the vis ion of financial inclus ion.. They are good ins titutions to work with, but they have limited reach. Als o, every corporate entity is an as s imilation of the knowledge of all the people who work for it. S o the bigger this s ys tem, the bigger will be this knowledge bank and the better will be my chances for learning and growth. Als o, a nationalized bank can give me national expos ure which I cannot expect working with an RRB. (then I made a humorous comment) - S ir working with RRB is like playing in Ranji Trophy and working with a nationalized bank like UBI is like playing for national team. Both are different. All 3 broke into laughter with this comment. (I don't know whether it was okay to make s uch a humorous comment, but it was s pontaneous and it jus t happened!) Interviewer (smiling) : But Ranji Trophy is als o a link to the national team, and you are anyway being paid the s ame as a national team player. Me : S ir, playing for national team is a matter of privilege, which is beyond monetary benefits . Interviewer : Alright. Now tell me about the advances portfolio of an RRB? Me : S ir as I s aid earlier, RRBs work for agriculture financing and to accomplis h financial inclus ion. Their advances portfolio compris es mos tly of advances for - crops , tractors , minor irrigation, s elf help groups etc. But tehs il and dis trict level branches have a fair amount of bus ines s in regular loans like - home loans , vehicle loans , educational loans etc. But s till the major focus is on agriculture financing. Interviewer : How many RRBs does S BI have? Me : I am not very s ure S ir, but S BI owns around 12-15 RRBs in various s tates . In Gujarat, they have only 1 RRB. Interviewer : Okay, s o they have 1 RRB in Gujarat, hmmm. What is the s hare-holding pattern of an RRB? Me : (Confidently) S ir every RRB has 50% s take of central govt, 15% s take of s tate govt and 35% s take of its s pons or bank. Interviewer : Hmmmm. Which is the bes t quality a leader s hould pos s es s ? Me : S ir leaders hip, whether formal or informal, is all about taking charge. Coming forward and owing the res pons ibility. S o I think for any leader, having the attitude to 'take the charge' and 'owing the res pons ibility' is the bigges t quality. Apart from this , a leader has to have influential qualities to get the objectives met. Interviewer : Have you, in your life ever s hown s uch qualities ? Me : Yes S ir, at the time of s tarting my job with RRB....he cut me in between and as ked, Interviewer : Not in RRB, tell me where els e have you s hown thes e leaders hip s kills which you jus t talked about. Me : S ir I have s hown s uch s kills in my family affairs on quite a few occas ions . Als o when I was an MBA s tudent, we were s uppos ed to make a group and pres ent various topics . It us ed to be a group exercis e, but I us ed to come forward and take the informal charge of the entire group and ens ured all team members ' efforts remained s treamlined and we met our objectives . Interviewer : Okay. Now tell me which news paper do you read? Me : S ir I regularly read Times of India. And I read Economic Times as well, but not everyday. Interviewer : Times of India? Really? Why not other news papers ? Me : S ir I pers onally prefer reading The Hindu. But I live in a very small town where it is very difficult to find Times of India even. We do not get delivery of The Hindu s o it is not pos s ible for me to read it. But I read its articles from internet. Interviewer : Oh I s ee. Yes , The Hindu does n't have wide dis tribution network. Anyway, tell me one major recent news you've read. Me : S ir 3 BJP minis ters of Karnataka have res igned today s ince they were caught watching obs cene video clips on their
cell phones during legis lative as s embly. Thes e are the headlines of today's news paper as well. Interviewer : Okay. S o what do you do at RRB at pres ent? Me : S ir, we 7 probationers have been as s igned a s pecial project initially. Actually S BI has given our RRB Bancs s oftware which they us e for CBS . The migration from old s ys tem to new s ys tem took place few months back but becaus e of this migration, there have been s ome mismatches of data. Our objective is to correctly calculate all the parameters and ens ure the accounts migrated are correct. Interviewer : What is the NPA level in your bank? Me : S ir I am not 100% s ure, but it is around 1%. (in actual, it is around 0.8% s o I could give a clos e ans wer s omehow! ) Interviewer : Oh I s ee. Can you tell me which s ectors come under infras tructure financing? Me : S ir, power s ector comes under infras tructure financing. Interviewer : Then? Go on pleas e. Me : (thought a bit), trans portation s ector als o comes under infras tructure financing. Interviewer : Anything els e? Me : Not being able to recollect more S ir. Interviewer : Its okay, its okay. Then he s ignaled other members if they want to as k me anything. They s aid no. Then he s aid, Okay Jos hi, you may leave now. I thanked everyone and left.
