India and Japan to Conduct First Ever Naval Exercise [ 6/5/2012] The Indian Navy and the Japanese

Maritime Self Defence Force will conduct their first ever bilateral exercise during the visit of four Indian Navy ships to Japan from 5-9 June, 2012 as part of the scheduled Overseas Fleet Deployment. The exercise will be conducted off the coast of Japan on 09-10 June, 2012. Vice Admiral DK Joshi is the Next Navy Chief [ 6/5/2012] The Government has appointed Vice Admiral DK Joshi, presently Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C) Western Naval Command, as the next Chief of the Naval Staff with effect from afternoon of August 31, 2012. The present Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral NK Verma retires from service on Aug 31, 2012. Born on July 04, 1954 Vice Admiral Joshi was commissioned on April 01, 1974 in the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy. During his long and distinguished Service spanning nearly 38 years, he has served in a variety of Command, Staff and Instructional appointments. Vice Admiral Joshi`s Sea Command includes Guided Missile Corvette Kuthar, Guided Missile destroyer Ranvir and the Aircraft Carrier Viraat. Before taking over as FOC-in-C Western Naval Command, he has served as the Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, Commander- in-Chief of A&N Command (CINCAN) and the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC). Vice Admiral Joshi is a distinguished graduate of the Naval War College, USA, an alumnus of the College of Naval Warfare, Mumbai and the prestigious National Defence College, New Delhi. He was Defence Advisor in the Indian High Commission at Singapore from 1996 to 1999. Vice Admiral Joshi has been decorated with ParamVishistSeva Medal (PVSM), AtiVishistSeva Medal (AVSM), YudhSeva Medal (YSM), NauSena Medal (NM) and VishistSeva Medal (VSM). He is one of the Honorary ADCs of the Supreme Commander.

President of India Felicitates Master Robin Singh, the winner of Roshni Logo competition at Rashtrapati Bhavan [ 6/5/2012] The President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil felicitated Master Robin Singh of Class 9 from Kendriya Vidyalaya Border Security Force (BSF) School at Bandipore in Jammu and Kashmir at Rashtrapati Bhavan today. Master Robin Singhs design was selected as the winning logo for the Roshni Prachodaya Society, a Presidents Estate sustainability initiative. The competition was held in association with the CIIs India@75 - an outreach programme for realizing the dream of an inclusive, sustainable and developed India by 2022. The competition whose result was declared on May 31, 2012 saw thousand of entries from across the country. Master Vibhu Prakash a student from Class 4 of Air Force School, Panchavati, Delhi Cantt. was also felicitated. He had received the Encouragement Prize on May 31, 2012. Wheat Procurement Crosses 350 lakh Tonne [ 6/4/2012] Wheat procurement in Ravi Marketing Season, 2012-13 has crossed the mark of 350 lakh tonne. As on June 4, 2012 total procurement of 353, 23, 772 tonne has been made by various Government agencies which is a record. The procurement last year on the day was 263,88,624 tonne. Highest procurement has been made in Punjab, i.e. 128,00257 tonne followed by Haryana 86,52,786 tonne and Madhya Pradesh 84,85,818 tonne. Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan have also made significant procurement by procuring 32,25,393 tonne and 15,93,674 tonne respectively. Anand crowned World Chess Champion for fifth time [ 5/30/2012] Defending champion Vishwanathan Anand of India clinched the World Chess Championship title for the fifth time here on Wednesday defeating Israeli challenger Boris Gelfand in a rapidchess tie-breaker. Anand sealed his fourth-consecutive world title beating Gelfand 2.5-1.5 in the four-match tie breaker at Moscow's State Tretyakov Gallery. The tournament went into the tie-breakers after Anand and Gelfand drew the 12th game Monday. They were tied 6-6 after the final round. Justice V.S.Sirpurkar takes over as New Chairman of the Competition Appellate Tribunal of India[ 5/29/2012] Justice V.S.Sirpurkar, a retired Judge of the Supreme Court of India today assumed the charge as Chairman of the Competition Appellate Tribunal of India. He took the oath of office was administered the oath of office and Secrecy in his office chamber. Born on 22 August, 1946, Justice Sirpurkar, joined Judicial Services as Judge Bombay High Court in 1992 and later served as Chief Justice in the High Courts of Uttarakhand and Calcutta. He was elevated to Supreme Court in 2007. India and Netherlands sign Protocol Amending DTAC [ 5/28/2012] The Convention between the Kingdom of Netherlands and the Republic of India for the avoidance of double taxation and for the

prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income and on capital was signed on 30th July, 1988 (DTAC). Both India and Netherlands have concluded a Protocol to amend the Article 26 of the DTAC concerning Exchange of Information to bring it in line with the international standards. On 10th May, 2012, India and Netherlands have signed the Protocol at The Hague, Netherlands. The protocol was signed by Ms. Bhaswati Mukherjee, Ambassador of India to The Netherlands and Mr. F.H.H.Weekers, state Secretary of Finance, Netherlands. The Protocol will replace the Article concerning Exchange of Information in the existing DTAC between India and Netherlands and will allow exchange of banking information as well as information without domestic interest. It will, now, allow use of information for non-tax purpose if allowed under the domestic laws of both the countries, after the approval of the supplying state. Vice President Presents International Gandhi Awards-2011 to Dr. Claire Velut & Dr. J.D. Samant [5/28/2012] The Vice President of India Shri M. Hamid Ansari presented International Gandhi Award-2011 to Dr. Caire Velut and Dr. J.D.Samant at a function organized by Gandhi Memorial Leprosy Foundation, Wardha (Maharashtra) today here. Addressing on the occasion, Shri Ansari said that as a disease, leprosy has affected humans for over 2000 years. Social stigma associated with leprosy had imputed moral and social overtones to a medical condition leading to ostracism. Mahatma Gandhi understood the social dimension of leprosy. 90% rural households will have tapped water system by 2022 [ 5/27/2012] The Government said that 90 percent of all rural households in the country will be covered by tapped water system by 2022, as the focus now is shifted from the hand pump approach to the surface water supply system. Briefing the media after a two-day conference of State Ministers in charge of Rural Drinking water supply and Sanitation, Rural Development Minister Shri Jairam Ramesh said in New Delhi that at present only 35 percent households in rural India has piped water system. He informed that while Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh have more than 80 percent rural areas covered by tapped water supply, in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar less than 10 percent areas are under the piped water scheme, as the focus in these North Indian States are more on hand pumps. Shri Ramesh said, due to absence of electricity in rural and extremely backward areas, some States have demanded solarenergy based drinking water system. He said that the Centre has already approved installation of solar-based water system in 10,000 villages of 78 naxal-affected districts with an outlay of 540 crore rupees and the project will be completed in 18 months. 60th Anniversary of the Parliament of India [ 5/26/2012] On 13th May 1952, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha held their first sessions, after the completion of the first General Elections in the country. India has developed its own missile defence shield [ 5/7/2012] India has developed its own missile defence shield which can be put in place at short notice to protect at least two cities, bringing the country at par with an elite group of few nations. The shield, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has been tested successfully and an incoming ballistic missile with the range of up to 2,000 kms can be destroyed. "The Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) shield is now mature. We are ready to put phase one in place and it can be put in very short time," DRDO chief V K Saraswat told PTI in an interview.

Talking to the media after meeting Balan here, Union Rural Development Minister Shri Jairam Ramesh said she will appear in ad campaigns to propagate construction and use of toilets. The Minister informed that Balan is the first brand ambassador of the Ministry. According to UNICEFWHO Joint Monitoring Programme Report 2010, nearly 60 per cent of India`s 1.1 billion people still practice open defecation and close to 58% of all open defecations in the World is in India. Vinod Rai to Head UN Audit Panel [ 1/23/2012] The Central government may have been critical of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Vinod Rai for taking out a series of adverse findings on government policies, but the contribution of the auditor seems to have been recognized by the United Nations which has appointed him as Chairman of its panel of external auditor. Rai as Chairman will oversee the audit of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), besides setting agenda for all UN specialized agencies such as the World Health Organisation (WHO), World Food Program me (WFP) and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). Along with director general of CAG, Jagbans Singh, Rai will audit the accounts and management operations of the UN and its specialized agencies and submit the report to the UN General Assembly. Pankaj Pachauri appointed as Prime Minister's new communications advisor [ 1/22/2012] Pankaj Pachauri, a TV journalist, was appointed as communication advisor in the PMO. A release from the PMO had said that Pachauri will advise the PMO on communication strategies in print, electronic and social media. Indian-born Noble laureate Venkatraman Ramakrishnan gets Knighthood [ 1/1/2012] Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, India-born US citizen whose pioneering work in molecular biology won him the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, has been honoured with a knighthood by the royal establishment here in a rare recognition of achievement by foreigners based in Britain. 58 year old Ramakrishnan is based at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge. He has been conferred knighthood for services to molecular biology.
