WEEKLY HOME GROUP GUIDE

Welcome Are you great at something? Playing the oboe, shooting pool, juggling, cooking, tap dancing? Its not good to brag on yourself, but what if it was Jesus bragging on you? How would you feel if the Great I AM called you great at something? What does Jesus want us to be great at? Well talk about this tonight as we look again at Matthew 5:17-20.

Family Time Theres a talk show host that has a bit in his program where people come out & show their unique talents. What talents do the members of our HG possess? Lets display our greatness! You might be great at something that Im not great at, & I might be great at something youre not great at. BUT, Jesus told us that each of us can be great at something very important to Him. Lets read Matthew 5:19 to find out what that is. Remember last weeks lesson where Jesus said, You are the light of the world, so let your light shine. You & I are only light because the True Light of the world (Jesus Christ) lives in us. Its His light that shines in us...not our own. In the same way, we cannot be great (i.e., practice & teach the commands of Jesus) on our own. What did Jesus do for us so that we could obey His Word & be great for Him? (read Matthew 5:17) Jesus perfectly kept Gods Law & died for those who failed to keep the Law (everyone in the world). He took our sins & gave us His righteousness. He made us great & gives us everything we need to be great for Him!

Kids Time Name as many great things about Jesus as you can think of. (Use a whiteboard, if you have one.) possible answers: He walked on water, gave sight to the blind, died & rose again, fed 5000 people with only 2 fish & 5 loaves, etc. One special thing about Jesus was that He was great (perfect, in fact) at obeying His Father. Look at Matthew 5:17 again. He never ever sinned! Have you ever disobeyed Gods commands? Were not like Jesus in that way, are we? The good news is that even though were not perfectly obeying Gods Laws, He still loves us & did an amazingly great thing for us! What did He do? Have the children make their own sock puppets, using white socks, markers, etc. Let the kids play for a few minutes with their puppets, then take each of the puppets away from them. Lay them in front of the kids & ask them why their puppets arent talking, playing or laughing now? (They cant do anything on their own.) Its only when you put your hand in the sock that the puppets come to life. In the same way, its only when Jesus lives inside of us that we come to life & do & say the great things He wants us to.

Adult Time What do these verses teach about the condition of mankind? Eph 2:1; Col 2:13; Rom 3:10-18. (All are dead in their sins & incapable of attaining Gods righteous standard on their own.) What do these verses teach about the Law? Rom 3:20; Rom 7:7; Gal 2:16; Gal 3:11. (The Law was never intended to save us. It points out our sin & our inability to save ourselves.) Now read Matt 5:17 again...why is it so important that Jesus didnt abolish the Law, but fulfilled (perfectly kept) the Law? (His perfect obedience proved that He was worthy to be slain & able to impart His righteousness on those who trust in Him.) Dead people cant be great at anything really...except being dead. But a living, breathing, Spirit-filled believer can be great because the Spirit of Life is living & breathing & moving in him. Prayer Time Thank God for the greatness of His Son! Praise His Holy Name! Rejoice in the great things He has done for us!
