Tutorial 1: Chapter 1: Introduction To Pathology 25 Marks: Histotechnology I (HDL 105) Pan, S. Y. (2011)

This document provides definitions for key pathology terms and answers to multiple choice questions related to pathology. It defines etiology as the study of the cause of disease, pathology as the study of molecular, cellular, tissue, or organ responses to injury, and epidemiology as the study of health patterns in populations. It also defines pathogenesis, morphology, functional consequences, necropsy, euthanasia, autopsy, and prognosis. The document then provides the correct answers to multiple choice questions about acquired defects, biopsies, epidemiology, morphological changes, and the field that studies structural and functional changes in the body.

TUTORIAL 1: CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION TO PATHOLOGY ANSWER SCHEME 25 MARKS 1. Define the following terms: (20 marks) a. Etiology: Study of the cause of a disease b. Pathology: Scientific study of the molecular, cellular, tissue, or organ system response to injurious agents. c. Epidemiology: Epidemiology is the study of health-event patterns in a society. It is the cornerstone method of public health research, and helps inform evidence-based medicine for identifying risk factors for disease and determining optimal treatment approaches to clinical practice and for preventive medicine. d. Pathogenesis: Mechanisms of development of disease. e. Morphology: The structural alterations induced in cell and tissues. f. Functional consequences: Functional results of the morphologic changes, as observed clinically g. Necropsy: Gross examination of the animal cadaver by systematic dissection in order to evaluate any abnormal changes (lesions) that may be present. h. Euthanasia: Intentional putting to death of an individual with an incurable or painful disease by employing humane means i. Autopsy: Synonymous to necropsy in human medicine j. Prognosis: Expected outcome of the disease, It is the clinician's estimate of the severity and possible result of a disease.
