World Environment Day Celebration June 10, 2012: Kolkata The Ganga, which is synonymous with the Indian

civilisation, is dying. Volunteers from the Sankatmochan Foundation have managed to blow the lid on government's claims that the Ganga is clean. The presence of the coliform bacteria, in the Ganga, is at an alarming level, so instead of cleansing those who bathe in it, the water is actually passing on several w water-borne diseases. Moreover, the Gangetic dolphin is today borne as endangered as the tiger. If the dolphin is to be saved it's the Ganga, which must be protected. The biggest problem with the Ganga is that all the sewage from the cities are dumped in the rive The only river. solution is to put a stop to this. World Environment Day (WED) was created to invoke political and public action towards issues concerned with the environment. On WED 2012, CNN-IBN focused on 'Saving the IBN Ganga', a 45-day campaign that highlights how the sacred river is dying despite thousands of crores of day rupees being spent to save it. CNN-IBN's special report shows how dams and pollution are killing the river -IBN's in every state it passes through. We, the members o GBS Yi-Net, wanted our campaign to be in of synchronization with the theme of WED 2012; Green Economy: Does it include you? and merge it with merged CNN-IBNs initiative. The UN Environment Programme defines the Green Economy as one that results in improved human well-being, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities , scarcities. The WED celebration of GBS Yi-Net was flagged of with eighteen Yi-Net members and thirty two other Net off supporters gathering at Babughat, Kolkata on a Sunday morning to campaign against dumping of waste in the river. We started cleaning the banks of the Ganga with our friends and family, who came to show their support. This is our first step towards th campaign that we are embarking upon to improve the well. the being of the people who live near the Ganga and draw their livelihood off it. As, South African President Jacob Zuma had said, Save tomorrow, today we must start saving the Ganga now, before its today, e now ecosystem gets destroyed in the future.
