President's Address: Positioned To Transform Construction Industry Through Vela Systems Acquisition
Presidents Address
Dear Friends and Colleagues, In early June the press wires were filled with titles like Autodesk Positioned to Transform Construction Industry Through Vela Systems Acquisition but what does it mean? The acquisition by Autodesk of Vela Systems adds to Autodesks solutions a technology and specifically a company known for leveraging cloud computing and mobile devices to link building information modeling with the physical activities of construction. The addition will certainly streamline multiple aspects of the construction process, done through increasing the BIM models quality and fidelity while improving the overall design. By moving a lot of a construction projects busy work such as inventory management, document tracking, and construction plans to the tablet and the cloud, this will result in big things for everyone involved from the original architect through to the eventual occupant. We will watch this development closely, as it is one of Autodesks most exciting recent moves. Tim Duncan, AIA President/CEO CADsoft Consulting

Revit Architecture Tip: Converting Model Lines to Detail Lines If you're anything like most Revit users, you've probably fallen into the trap of drawing something using a model line when you really needed a detail line, or vice versa. I've run into this plenty! It used to be a bit of a pain to convert one to the other, but with this great feature from the Subscription Advantage Pack, it's a breeze!

Now you see it... Now you don't! Isaac Harper, AEC Technical Consultant In AutoCAD 2012, Autodesk added some dynamic preview capabilities to some of their software that allow you see the final results before applying the settings to the command, eliminating the unnecessary Undos and repeated steps during a design process or testing. Some of these commands included: FILLET, CHAMFER, BLEND, JOIN and ARRAY as well as some 3D functionality to the UCS as well as some commands associated with SOLID and SURFACE LOFTS, (i.e. SURFBLEND, SURFPATCH, SURFFILLET, FILLETEDGE, CHAMFEREDGE, and LOFT) which also allows you to display the preview results with transparency to easily distinguish it from the completed objects. [Note: You can control the transparency level with the PREVIEWCREATIONTRANSPARENCY variable.] Autodesk has also added new model documentation workflows with preview capabilities with its Automated Drawing Views Commands. Oh Where, Oh Where Has My Google Earth Gone? Ron Couillard, AEC Technical Consultant With the release of Civil 3D 2013, there were a few cool additions that were added. With this being said, some users were disappointed to learn that Google Earth functionality was removed from Civil 3D 2013 all together. While I am only speculating and do not have anything official to refer to, I imagine that there were some legal issues involved, but as I stated, I dont know for sure. This has left more questions than answers and I have had alot of users asking about this. Is there any type of workaround? Can anything else be done to get that Google Earth functionality? I hope this blog will help ease some of the pain that not having Google Earth functionality may be causing you. Read More
