Final Presentation For Transport (Combined)

Road transportation has evolved significantly over time. Early forms included the use of animals like horses and camels to transport people and goods. The development of wheels and vehicles like sleds and travois improved transport. The Romans later built early road networks to enable military travel. Modern road transportation developed with early motorized vehicles in the late 18th and 19th centuries. Today's global road transportation industry involves extensive private vehicle ownership and commercial operations like car rental agencies that rent vehicles for short periods.

A car rental or car hire agency is a company that rent automobiles for short periods of time (generally ranging from a few hours to a few weeks). Car rental agencies primarily serve people who have a car that is temporarily out of reach or out of service, E.g. (travelers who are out of town or owners of damaged or destroyed vehicles who are awaiting repair or insurance compensation.) Who needs a rental car? Business travelers in need of flexibility. ii. Leisure travelers on vacation. iii. City dwellers on weekends escapes. iv. Those in need of a replacement vehicles. v. Those in need of vans or trucks.
i.

Car-rental firms operate either as corporations or as licensees. The largest firm is Hertz, Avis, Budget, Dollar, and Thrifty.

Car rental companies make their money from their rental of the car and from the sale of the used car.

History

of Car Rentals: The Beginnings

The U.S. car rental industry is believed to have began

back in 1916, when a Nebraska man by the name of Joe Saunders decided to lend out his Ford Model T to local and visiting businessmen.
It didn't take long for Saunders to realize he'd stumbled

onto a lucrative business idea. By 1925, Saunders' independent car rental company had grow to include operations In 21 states.

The Battle Begins

a.

Competitors (Walter L. Jacobs started renting out a dozen or so Model T Fords of his own).

b.

Both Saunders and Jacobs built their independent car rental businesses from humble beginnings, but only one would come out on top.
In the mid 1920s, Jacobs made the acquaintance of Mr. John Hertz, owner of The Yellow Cab Manufacturing Company in Chicago. Hertz eventually bought Jacobs' car rental company, giving birth to what is now one of the largest chain car rental companies in the nation. Later, General Motors would buy out the Hertz's Yellow Cab Manufacturing Company, renaming the car rental portion of the business the "Hertz Drive-UrSelf System."

Most car rental offices offer a range of vehicle sizes to suit a variety of budgets and space requirements and some additionally offer specialized vehicles to suit its location such as convertibles, prestige models, hybrid/electric vehicles or SUV and passenger vans. To allow for a uniform classification and easy comparison of car rental prices, the Association of Car Rental Industry Systems and Standards (ACRISS) has developed the ACRISS Car Classification Code coding system. This describes the size, door count, gearbox type (manual/automatic) and whether the car is air-conditioned, encoded into four letters.

ii.

Space
No need to lug bags. More space for impulse buys.

ii.

Space
Increase exposure to theft. Must choose car class carefully.

iii.

Cost
The more passengers, the less per- person cost.

iii.

Cost
Not necessarily cheaper than public transport if car not used during each day of rental.

Car-rental firms are the most concerned about the requirements of their customer.

i.

GPS (Global Positioning Systems)

A map or a synthesized voice provides running directions. Using satellites, the GPS provides drivers with an accurate reading of their location. It is possible to choose a route that avoid traffics jams.

ii.

DRLs (Daytime Running Lights)

Come on automatically whenever the ignition is turned on and make vehicles more conspicuous and therefore safer. Research has shown that DRLs substantially reduce daytime multiple-car accidents.

MCI traces its roots to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, where, in 1933, repair shop owner Harry Zoltok introduced his first vehicle design an 11-passenger body on a Packard chassis, sketched for his workers on the factory floor. It was that moment that the company then known as Fort Garry Motor Body and Paint Works Limited began a journey of growth and innovation.

History

the MC-9,
1963 : MCI opened its Pembina, North Dakota, plant and entered the U.S. market

1987 : Greyhound Dial Corp. sold Greyhound Lines, and the two

CLASS A

TYPES OF MOTORCOACH
CLASS B

CLASS C

Class A is the boxy bus-type. Class A coaches can have gasoline or diesel engines, a crucial choice because of many differences in cost, performance and maintenance. A gas-powered Class A motor home usually has the engine in the front, providing nice flexibility in floor plans and windows. Many Class A motor homes are "diesel - pushers," meaning they have a powerful diesel engine

Class B is usually an RV body built on a van-type chassis.

For instance, a class B might be the lowest cost, though models built on a commercial delivery van chassis can get up there in price.

Class C is an RV body on a truck chassis, with the truck cab poking out of the front. A Class C RV usually provides lots of features for the money, and is a classic "starter" motor home.

Future

A transport network for future

The road network providing a more reliable and freerflowing service for both personal travel and freight, with people able to make informed choices about how and when they travel;

Making walking and cycling a real alternative for local trips.

Smart car
Self-driving car Solar car Underwater submarine car

Dual Mode Vehicle

Dual-mode vehicles are commonly electrically powered and run in dual-mode for power too, using batteries for short distance and low speeds, and track-fed power for longer distances and higher speeds

Ground Vehicles:

Bus replaced by tram to reduce congestion

Electric motorcycle Design of new car ( using electric power )

Self-Driving Car (google car)

Google's cars not only record images of the road, but their computerized maps view road signs, find alternative routes and see traffic lights before they're even visible to a person. By using lasers, radars and cameras, the cars can analyze and process information about their surroundings faster than a human can.

The Forever Open Road will tackle global challenges such as

climate change,

carbon reduction,
energy saving, increasing need for journey time reliability in response to rising demand both for private car travel and the delivery of goods by road.

At the same time, it will help meet European goals to provide transport infrastructure that is
-

safe and secure; cleaner, quieter and more energy efficient;

highly competitive and sustainable;

Future bus transportation

Intelligent Traffic Lights system

Intelligent Traffic lights (ITL) that programed to reduce congestion Built in with camera to sensor cars to controls the traffic. ITL work as police traffic to control the congestion

Velo-City

Velo-City is a closed-in, elevated network of paved tubes that serve as pathways for bicyclists and roller bladers. Though in the conceptual design stages, Velo-City may soon http://www.wehome.com/blog/2011/0 become a reality in Toronto, 2/top-bizarre-new-publicOntario. Enclosed and protected from transportation-ideas/ the elements, Velo-City would provide a safe, efficient, low-cost, and highly ecoconscious way for Torontos citizens to commute.

Flying car

UrbanAero anticipates the personal flying vehicles initial affect will be felt in rescue and military operations. What gives UrbanAero confidence in its expectations is its patented ducted fan design and 'steering' system. UrbanAero is currently making the 'worlds first FAA certifiable, VTOL [vertical-take-off and landing], multi-mission, aerial, utility vehicle capable of operating safely in complex urban and natural environments'.

Which country produces most cars?

China. 1 out of 4 cars produced in the world comes from China. China was the worlds third-largest car market in 2006, as car sales in China soared by nearly 40% to 4.1 million units. Soon thereafter, China took the lead and became the worlds first-largest car market, as low vehicle penetration, rising incomes, greater credit availability and falling car prices lift sales past those of Japan. Furthermore, vehicle penetration in China still stands at only about 40 vehicles per 1,000 people, compared with approximately 700 vehicles per 1,000 people in the mature markets of the G7.
