Welcome to Media Studies!!

FUN TASK - You Have 10 Minutes:


In Groups of 4 - Grab a camera and create a short film expressing what you believe Media Studies will be about and what you think you will enjoy about it/what you may not enjoy quite so much - Basically your first impressions!!! Experiment with the cameras - you can film it in any way you wish!

What is Media Studies?


'Media' is the plural of medium (of communication), and the main media are: Television Magazines Film Radio Advertising Pop Music Newspapers Internet Media Studies involves the close analysis of the images, sounds and text that we experience via the media. It is the study of individual media texts (such as movies, TV shows) and: Who made them ("institution")? How they were made ("process")? Why they were made ("purpose")? Who they were made for ("audience")? What rules were followed when making them ("conventions" and "genre")?

The Next Year


Consists of 2 units: G321 (coursework) and G322 (exam!) Both are 50% weighting to your AS grade and 25% weighting to your final A level grade!
G321 coursework will take place from January 2012 April 2012

G322 study will take place from September 2011 till January 2012. The exam will be sat in January 2012!

G322 The Exam


2 hour examination 30 minute TV Drama Extract 45 minute analysis (representing something 45 minute institutions and audiences question

and using media language)

Miss Peacock and Mr Bluck will teach you both sections!.

Example of Question 2 Institutions and Audiences


How important is cross media convergence for institutions and audiences in a media area which you have studied?
You will do at least 4 in depth case studies on different film institutions and their films - e.g Vertigo Films, Film Four, Warner Bros and NBC Universal. Although it looks scary now by January you will know everything about this and other topics!!!!!!

G321 The Coursework


Create: The Titles and Opening of a new horror film, to last a maximum of 2 minutes. Planning and Research (20 marks) Construction (60 marks) Evaluation (20 marks) All work may be presented in groups (no bigger than 4 members) but all candidates will be marked individually for their contribution

You will get the most out of this course if you..
Are Independent Learners including researching and working outside of lessons. Always ask questions if you dont understand Always Meet Every Deadline Dont Blame the Equipment! Always come prepared for lessons ready to work and with notes See yourself as professional project workers NOT college students (especially with the coursework it is NOT a school project! )

The Next Few Weeks:


You will learn basic media theories with Miss Peacock and Mr Bluck.
After 1 week you will be doing a preliminary task with Miss Peacock and Mr Bluck At the end of September you will be looking at Institutions and Audiences/Film case studies as well as Representation in TV Drama.

Your Work
Store your work somewhere SAFE! You will need every single note you make - not just in this year but A2 year as well!!!
