Why work study is required ?

Techniques of Work study


1. Work study consists of following Two Major Techniques

a) Method Study: Systematic recording and critical examination of existing ways of doing things in order to make improvements

b) Work measurement: Application of techniques developed to establish time required for qualified worker to carry out task at defined rate of working.

1. Select: The job or process to be studied.

2. Record: All relevant facts and data about job or process.

3. Examine: The recorded facts critically and challenge everything that is done.

4. Develop: The most economical method, taking in to account all the circumstances.

5. Evaluate: The results attained by improved method, comparing it with quantity of work involved in it and calculating standard time for it.

6. Define: The new method and related time.

7. Install: The new method, training those involved as an agreed practice with the allotted time of operation

8. Maintain: The new standard practice by monitoring the results and comparing it with original targets.

Method Study Steps

1. Selecting The Work To Be Studied


a) Economical Consideration: Obvious choices under this consideration are as below

i.

Key profit generating, costly operations or processes with largest scrap or waste rates.

ii.

Bottlenecks which are holding up other operations downstream or upstream or operations with high

cycle times.

iii. Operations involving repetitive activities and requiring large amount of labor, which are going to run for longer times.

iv. Movements of material over long distances, requiring large amount of labor. One of the easiest technique is to apply Pareto analysis, to identify key operations or key products.

b) Technical Consideration:
i. Management may want to acquire advanced technologies in its operations.

ii. Before actual investment in newer technologies method study should be carried out to point out actual need of the enterprise for technology investment.

iii. Method study acts as scouting operation before introduction of more advanced technology.

c) Human Consideration:
i. Operations creating dissatisfaction among workers, such as those causing fatigue, monotonous activities should be obvious choices for Method Study.

ii. On the other hand if choice of a particular job leads to unrest or bad feeling to the workers, then however promising may be, it should be left alone.

2. Record, Examine & Develop


a) Recording The Facts:
i. To record all the facts related to existing Method. The most commonly used recording techniques are Charts & Diagrams
