Chapter Active and Passive Transport

This document contains information from a biology class on active and passive transport. It includes definitions of active transport and passive transport. Active transport requires energy in the form of ATP and moves molecules against their concentration gradient, while passive transport moves molecules down their concentration gradient without requiring energy. Examples are given of active transport of sodium and potassium ions and passive transport through facilitated diffusion. Students participate in activities to demonstrate these transport processes. Comparisons are made between active and passive transport in terms of energy use, direction of transport, and location.

3.7 Answer

Active transportis the movement ofmoleculesorionsfrom a region oflowerconcentration to a region ofhigherconcentration across the plasma membrane with the use of cellularenergy. Besides using energy in the form of ATP that is generated during respiration, active transport also requirecarrier 1/18/13 protein.
