Senator Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut was born in Stamford to a Jewish family with Polish and Austrian roots. He received his BA from Yale University and law degree from Yale Law School. Lieberman was elected to the Connecticut Senate in 1970 as a Democrat and later served as Attorney General of Connecticut from 1983 to 1989. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1988 and has been reelected three times. Lieberman was Al Gore's running mate in the 2000 presidential election. He is a supporter of gay rights, the Iraq War, and is strongly pro-Israel. Lieberman endorsed John McCain for president in 2008.

Senator (I), Connecticut

Born in Stamford, CT to Marcia and Henry Lieberman. Family descended from Polish and Austrian Jews. Observed Judaism in his youth and is still a practicing Orthodox Jew. Father ran a liquor store.

BA in Political Science and Economics from Yale University in 1964 First member of his family to graduate from college Attained a Law degree from Yale Law in 1967.

Elected to the Connecticut Senate in 1970as a Democrat, where he served for 10 years. Lost to a Republican challenger in 1980, where Reagan and the Republicans won in a landslide. Attorney General of Connecticut from 19831989.

Elected in 1988, upsetting Lowell Weicker, to the Senate. Won relection in 1994 and 2000 by wide margins. Was defeated in the Democratic Primary by Ned Lamont, but ran as an Independent in 2006 and won with 49.7% of the vote. Has announced that he will retire following the completion of his fourth term in Senate in 2012. His replacement is Senator Elect Chris Murphy

Lieberman was selected by Al Gore as his running mate. Although the Gore-Lieberman ticket won the popular vote by 0.5% over then Texas Governor George W Bush and Dick Cheney, but lost the electoral college and their campaigns calls for a recount of the Florida vote were denied by the Supreme Court. Floridas 25 electoral votes were awarded to Bush and with them, the presidency.

Lieberman is supportive of gay rights, having championed the repeal of the Dont Ask, Dont Tell policy in 2010-2011. Lieberman also defended Massachusetts 2003 decision to legalize gay marriage. Lieberman has also supports regulation of the Internet, having introduced a bill called Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act of 2010, which would grant the President emergency powers over the Internet. Liebermans opposition to Wikileaks has led to him being percieved as an opponent to Internet free speech and made him the target of cyber attacks by the group Anonymous.

Iraq War: Lieberman was outspoken in his support of the Iraq war, having been one of the few Democrats to sign the so-called Iraq Resolution, a joint-resolution which authorized military action against Iraq. Lieberman is also strongly pro-Israel and antiIran. Is a supporter of NAFTA.

Lieberman has supported the death penalty since running for Senate in 1988. Lieberman cosponsored, with Hillary Clinton, the Family Entertainment Act, which sought to protect minors from violent and graphic content in video games. Similarly, he voted in favor of the Communications Decency Act of 1996, which was the first notable attempt by Congress to regulate Internet pornography. Is also the chairman on the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.

Lieberman endorsed McCain for president in 2007, citing McCains stance on the War on Terrorism as his main reason for his endorsement. Lieberman spoke at the 2008 Republican National Convention on the behalf of John McCain and Sarah Palin. Additionally, it was reported by ABC news that Lieberman had been considered as a running mate by McCain but that McCain decided against Lieberman for fear of alienating the GOPs conservative base.
