28.1 Intro.
The Renaissance was the rebirth and flowering of culture at the end of the Middle Ages that b/g in Italy and spread throughout Europe. Rebirth in classical art and learning in 1300-1500s. What was life like in the Middle Ages?

28.2 What Was the Renewed interest in the Classical World?


Renewed interest in ancient Greece and Rome. Where was this ancient knowledge preserved? Merchants and Crusaders brought back goods and ideas from the Byzantines. Renewed interest in art and learning led to the Ren.

What Was Classical Art?


Classic Period: 500 B.C. to 500 A.D. Greek and Roman sculptures, pottery, murals, and mosaics. Showed importance of people, leaders, gods & goddesses.

What Was Medieval Art?


Medieval Period: 500 A.D. to 1300 A.D. Stained glass windows, tapestries, paintings, illuminated manuscripts, and sculptures. What was the main function of Medieval art? Wanted to teach religion.

What Was Ren. Art?


Ren. Period: 1300 to 1600 Sculptures, murals, drawings, and paintings. Wanted to show importance of people and nature, not just religion.

28.3 What Happened to the Growth of Trade & Commerce?


B/c of the Crusades, the East and West (Europe) come into contact w/ each other creating more trade. Which European country is in the middle of the East and West? Italian cities b/c trading centers for traders & merchants. The increase in trade led to a new economy where people b/g to buy things with coins, creating a money economy.

As a result, guess who becomes more important Craftsmen, merchants, and bankers b/c more important. Why? Wealthy patrons b/g commissioning new buildings and art.

28.4 What Was the Influence of the Italian City-State?


The Ren. b/g in N. and C. Italy b/c of the prosperity of its city-states. Italian towns turned into independent city-states that were self-ruled. What do you need to control to be self-ruled? Conducted their own trade, collected own taxes, and made own laws. Who do you think governed them? The city-states wealth encouraged a boom in art & learning. Why?

28.5 What Was the Growth of Humanism?


Humanists believed in the worth and potential of all Humans. Wanted to balance faith with individual dignity, nature, and society. Guess which cultures they studied Petrarch was first Humanist that studied ancient Greek and Latin texts. In education, they stressed the humanities. What subjects are included?

Placed much importance on observation and experimentation. Separated church and state. Prized achievement over class. Who do you think these beliefs came into conflict with?
