Generic Access Network

Generic Access Network (GAN), also called UMA, is a telecommunication system that extends mobile services over IP networks. It allows for dual-mode cellular-WiFi handsets. Major companies involved in developing GAN include Alcatel, Nokia, Nortel Networks, O2, RIM, Rogers Wireless, and Siemens. GAN provides services like dual-mode handsets, femtocells, analog terminal adapters, and soft-mobiles. The most important service is for dual-mode handsets, which can use either GSM or Wi-Fi networks. GAN architecture includes network controllers and a call control system to allow secure VoIP calling over internet connections when on Wi-Fi.

Advantages : a.Less expensive. b.Less congestion. c.Easy connection through Hot-Spots. d.More affordable as compared to landline. Disadvantages : a.More battery usage and heavy devices. b.Will lead to increase in rate plans of VOIP.
