What is new about New
Media?
Why are some media considered to be “new.”
There is a temptation to simply list down the
latest developments in media technologies and
call these new yet it is inadequate because of
the rapid change that renders a media outdated.
Instead of understanding the degree of newness,
What is new for society
about new media

What is new for society
about the new media
Miles 1997; Rice 1999; Barr 2000 defines new
media as those forms that combine 3 Cs

 computing and information technology

 communication networks
 digitized media and information content.
James Webster & Patricia
Phalen (1997)
Webster & Phalen viewed media in terms of:

 Diversity of content
 Correlation of content with channels
 Availability
New Media - Characteristics

New Media - Characteristics
 Channels Are Differentially Available
 Technological, economic & regulatory factors.

members of the audience.

Who say what?
“We are still learning. It is not easy to make this
transition. It is like going from sea to land or vice
versa, you are changing your medium and you
need to get comfortable with it. But we are
working hard at it.”
- PM Lee Hsien Loong (Channelnewsasia.com)
Who say what?
What is needed are young MPs who are
comfortable with the new media landscape.

Who say what?
“…we hope to highlight the wide range of media
choices available and foster pride in Made-by
Singapore media content, leading to a creative
and connected society.”
- Dr Christopher Chia, CEO of MDA
(www.straitstimes.com - Media Fiesta)
Who say what?
“New Media has dramatically changed how messages
are sent, received, and understood. An increasingly
"connected" audience means traditionally popular
advertising spots in mainstream media like newspapers,
magazines, and even television are losing eyeballs to
sites like hulu.com and Youtube.
