Tuberculosis in The United States: National Tuberculosis Surveillance System Highlights From 2011

- Tuberculosis (TB) rates in the United States have declined in recent decades but certain groups remain at higher risk. In 2011, the national TB rate was 3.4 cases per 100,000 persons. - Foreign-born persons account for a large proportion of TB cases, with over half of 2011 cases occurring in persons born outside the US. Certain racial/ethnic minorities including Blacks, Hispanics, Asians and Native Hawaiians have higher rates of TB. - While drug-resistant TB is still rare in the US, ongoing surveillance is needed to monitor trends and ensure effective treatment.
