Inclusive Education

Inclusive education aims to provide all students with opportunities to learn together regardless of their characteristics or needs. It creates welcoming schools for students who have traditionally been excluded, such as those with disabilities. This is done by making adaptations to materials, curriculum, and expectations to meet individual student needs while maintaining academic goals. The benefits for students with special needs include remaining on a path to participate in society as adults and achieving their full potential through having all their needs met together in inclusive settings. It also teaches teamwork and valuing diversity to all students.

What is Inclusion?
An educational approach and philosophy that provides all students with community membership and greater opportunities for academic and social achievement. Inclusion is about making sure that each and every student feels welcome and that their unique needs and learning styles are attended to and valued.

Putting it into our context


The Ministry of Education, Malaysia in its report entitled The Development of Education for the International Conference on Education in Geneva on November, 2008; stated that inclusive means creating schools which welcome all learners, regardless of their characteristic, disadvantages or difficulties. It is including the traditionally excluded or marginalized groups: such as disabled children, girls, children in remote villages, and the very poor. These invisible groups are excluded from governmental policy and access to education. So it is making these invisible groups visible in schools.

How is it done?
Adaptations are made to the materials, the curriculum and/or the expectations of the activities for the individual child, maintaining achievement of all individual and academic goals. The purpose isn't simply social or academic, but to meet all of a child's needs together where ever possible.

Benefits to children with special needs


Remain on a path that leads to an adult life as a participating member of society. Meeting all their needs together increases their ability to achieve academic and physical growth to their potential, and it enhances their overall quality of life.

Teaches all children team work and how to interrelate and function together with others of different abilities.
They learn to value diversity, see the ability of others to contribute, and it gives children a sense of unity.
