How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Project construction:
Whilst we were constructing our A2 music video, we used several high quality DSLR cameras to films the majority of our project. As well as this we used several other different pieces of equipment to help create desired effects at particular locations. These pieces of equipment included LED lights for diverse lighting effects, imovie for the main editing of our project, SD cameras for the behind the scene footage and the hover head projectors in the faraday rooms. The over head projectors were the biggest help for us as the faraday room presented a room that was already set up and what we were looking for so we used the OHPs to create a secret base style background.

Project research:
With the research we used several different thongs to gather information. For a lot of the research for our actual product we used YouTube to look at videos of a similar genre to construct a music video that fitted the rock genre. In the end we devised a chase scene that we feel fitted the genre and the music of our video. To research what audience would be best for our music video we constructed a questionnaire and sent it out through facebook. This questionnaire aimed to discover what age group would listen to our music video. In the end we discovered that an age range of 15-30 years old would most likely be view our music video so that is group we aimed our video at.

Project planning
All of our planning had to take into account the fact that we had to work with no financial budget and we were limited to what songs we could use as copyright problems prevented us from using well known songs in our video. To overcome the financial budget problems, we had access to the school media equipment which included: cameras, reflectors, LED lights and tripods. To solve the copyright issues we could potentially face, we contacted local band and asked for permission to use one of their song. The band that we chose in the end was called Frontline Fire and the song they allowed us to use was called Nothing to Lose. For the planning stages we simply gathered the results from the questionnaire and constructed storyboards around the ideas that were perceived well and dropped the ideas that weren't. once we had came up with a solid set of storyboards we showed our classmates to see if there were any suggestions they could make. Once we had made minor alterations to our ideas we began shooting early clips of our project. Once we had a rough story filmed we once again asked our class mates for feedback, and once again we took in any suggestions and altered what needed to be. Once done, we continued to film our project. We made several copies in i movie to test out different effects and in the end we decided to simply darken the clips to give them a more shaded, shadow effect.

Limitations

Images too big to print on paper smaller than A1 paper and this could not be achieved as the A1 printer was inoperable. This situation was out of our control as it was a problem for IT support to rectify, not ours. We started filming the main band shots of our product in the school Faraday room as we first believed that this room would offer adequate lighting for our music video. Upon reflection of a few seconds of footage, we discovered that the natural lighting of the room was too dark. To solve this problem we used one of the school LED light projectors from the TV studio, which allowed us to easily control and manipulate the light of the room. After a brief stint filming we found this to be a more desirable outcome for this section of footage. To view our process of exploiting the Faraday rooms features please viewBehind the scenes: Faraday room One of the main limitations in equipment was the difference between our film cameras and the cameras used on large scale TV/film productions. Whilst the Larger scale film cameras can be used with multiple mounts, lenses and filters, we were restricted to using only 3 different camera lenses for our production. This presented problems with acquiring the shots that we wanted for our films. To overcome these problems, we either had to compromise with different shots or spend more time and effort in obtaining these shots. As an example, we needed to use a skateboard as a makeshift tracking device! Another problem we found that came about through the limitations of technology, involved the steadiness of some of our free hand shots as we didnt have access to the equipment which would help eliminate this problem, such as Steady cam. To overcome most of this problem we used a piece of software in i Movie which largely steadied the shots.

Project evaluation
As with our research, we sent the video out over Facebook to get feedback but as well as this we did a focus group to view our project. (The video for this can be seen in Evaluation question 3). With our focus group we got our classmates to watch the finished version of our music video and give their feedback.

Personal reflection:
I feel that throughout our video we have tried our best to create a rock genre music video. At time there were areas of the video that we could have filmed or edited in slightly different ways to get different potentially better results but other than that I feel that me and Matt have created an effective music video. Me playing two parts (four if you count the band singer and the silhouette man) was meant to help eliminate the need to depend on other people, which it did, but limited the shots we could do as we didnt have the resources available to have these two people edited together in one scene.
