Topic:-Printers: Presented By:RAKESH KUMAR (B.SC - IT) 1 Year

1. The document discusses different types of printers including impact printers like daisy wheel printers, dot matrix printers, and drum printers, as well as non-impact printers like inkjet printers and laser printers. 2. Impact printers work by pressing ink against paper using pins or hammers, while non-impact printers generate images without physically striking the paper. 3. Each printer type has advantages like printing quality, speed, and capabilities, as well as disadvantages such as noise levels and cost. Laser printers provide high-quality output but are more expensive than inkjet or dot matrix models.

Introduction Requirement of printers Types of printers

Introduction
Printer: A printer is a hard copy output device.A printer is capable of printing characters, symbols and graphics on paper.

Requirement
Printers are used to print characters, symbols and graphics on paper as a hard- copy output. A hard-copy is an output which is produced on a paper or some material, which can be touched and carried for being shown to others. They are permanent in nature ,and can be kept in paper files.

Types of printers
Impact Printers

Non-impact
Printers

Impact printers
An Impact printer makes contact with the paper. It forms the print image by pressing an inked ribbon against the paper, using pins or hammers to shape the image. The hammer presses the images of fully formed characters against the ribbon.

Types of impact printers

Daisy wheel printers Chain printers Dot matrix printers Drum printers

Daisy wheel printers :They has a print wheel with a set of print characters on the outside tip of the flat spokes. While printing the wheel rotates by rotator. The radius of the wheel is 65mm. Speed is measured in cps(character per second). Speed is 60cps-120cps.

Advantages:-

Printing quality is good. They gives clear printouts. They can not print graphics, only text can be printed. Only text with single type face at a time can be printed. The wheel has to be replaced when we wish to change the font. It comes with a single color. It is noisy

Disadvantages :-

Chain printers
Chain printers are line printers, which print one line at a time.speed is in range of 400-3000 lines per minute. Chain printers are consists of a metallic chain which moves horizontally at a fixed speed, on which all the characters of the character set supported by the printer are embossed. A standard character set may have 48,64or96 characters. In order to enhance the printing speed, the characters in character set are embossed several times on the chain.

Chain printer can print one line at a time. They have a good speed.

Advantages

The chain of the chain printer can be changed easily hence These printers allow the use of different font and different languages.

Disadvantages

Chain printers are noisy in operation. It can print pre-defined sets of characters. Chain printers do not have ability to print any shape of characters, graphics such as charts and graphs. If we want to change the font than ,we have to change the chain, this process is very expensive.

Dot matrix printer

These printers are also called as serial printers .These are character printers.speed is 70cps600cps. These printers have a small pins attached to the print heads in form of a matrix(collection of rows and columns). They form characters and all kind of images as a pattern of dots. A dot matrix printer has a print head, which can move horizontally(left to right and right to left) across the paper.

Advantages:These printer can print graphics and many special characters. They are cheap in cost. Able to print characters of different font and size.

Disadvantages
They are noisy.

Graphics printouts are not so good. To raise the quality of printouts, number of pins has to be increased

Drum printers
Drum printers are line printers.speed is 300 to 2000 lines per minute. Drum printers are consists of a solid cylindrical drum that has raise characters on its surface in the form of circular bands. Each band consists of all the printing characters supported by the printer in its character set. The total number of bands is equal to the maximum number of characters that can be printed in one line.

Advantages:-

Drum printers have a good speed of printing. They can print one line at a time.

Drum printers can be used to print multiple copies by using carbon paper.

Disadvantages:The drum of the drum printer is expensive and can not be changed often. Drum printers can only print a pre-defined sets of characters,in a pre-defined style, which is embossed on the drum. Drum printers are noisy in operation.

Non-impact printers
These printers uses other means to create an image. These printers do not strike characters against ribbon or paper when they print. These printers generate much less noise than impact printer.

Types of non impact printers

Ink-jet printers Laser printers

Ink-jet printers
Ink-jet printers are character printers.speed is 40-300cps. These printers form characters and all kind of images by spraying small drops of ink on the paper. In these printers ,pipes or nozzles are used instead of pins that throws droplet of ink on the paper to form an impression.

Advantages:Ink-jet printers are less noisy. They can print text as well as images. They are cheaper as compared to laser printers. Ink-jet printers have a good speed. These printers are available in both monochrome and colored form which can print 2,56,000 colors at a time.

Disadvantages:-

Its printing quality is not so good as compared to laser printer. Its image quality is 360dpi which is not so good as compared to the laser printer whose image quality is 1800dpi.

Laser printers
Laser printers are page printers which print one page at a time. Normally its speed is 4-12 pages per minute. It is used for desktop publishing. It basically uses 4 colors: 1.Black 2.Magenta(red) 3.Cyan(blue) 4.Yellow

Advantages:They are less noisy ,with a good speed.

Capable to print graph.

They provide us variety of font types , font style and sizes. Image quality is good. Comes in monochrome and colored both.

Disadvantage:They are expansive .
