ASSESSING SCHOOL WORKSHOPS

SPPE 1033: WORKSHOP SAFETY AND MANAGEMENT GROUP PROJECT

GROUP WORK: Guidelines


Form 8 groups with 5-6 members each. Using the knowledge and skills you gained from the course, assess or evaluate the workshops of the different schools/polytechnics/community colleges in terms of safety and management effectiveness and efficiency. Each group has to assess one workshop. Develop your own set of evaluation criteria, having in mind all the things you learned from the course (e.g., fire safety, electrical safety, workshop planning, organizing, controlling, etc.) Come-up with a 15-page report using the following format as a guide:

ASSESSMENT CONSIDERATIONS
Floor plan Ventilation Space allotment (e.g., learning area, storage area, space per student, etc) Lighting Equipment, tools and machines Safety precautions Electrical safety Housekeeping Organizing, directing and controlling

OBJECTIVES
The objectives of evaluating the welding workshop in Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan, Johor Bharu are to determine the actual situation of this welding workshop. The danger inherent in this workshop will be determined and improvement will be made after evaluation examined. Students also can get the prefigure about the workshop before entering the workforce. Besides that, students also can know the ways on how to organize and operate the organization of a workshop used according to the standard required for a workshop smoothen. This facilitates the lecturers and students to do work in the workshop.

ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE Assessment procedure is to facilitate the evaluation made at the workshop and workshop condition described in greater detail. The following are the required characteristics to facilitate the evaluation process: Spatial arrangements (pembahagian ruang)
Ventilation (pengudaraan) Fire prevention (pencegahan pembakaran) First aid (pertolongan cemas) Personal Protection Equipment Administrative controls (kawalan pentadbiran) Machine guarding (keselamatan pada mesin) Electrical safety (keselamatan elektrik) Housekeeping (pengemasan) Training (bagi latihan) planning,Organizing, directing, and controlling

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION


Spatial

arrangements (pembahagian ruang) Good workshop division space. Space for walking and to do work are divided for convenience when doing work.

Learning spaces are narrow and less guarded in term of neatness

Adequate storage space for equipment and materials put to work.

Division of space for the dump materials that have been used.

ELECTRICAL PLAN

Ventilation (pengudaraan)
Good

ventilation with enough exhaust fan

Roller door is used in the workshop to allow the flow of air

Sufficient number of windows to allow ventilation smoothly.

Fire prevention (pencegahan pembakaran)


The fire extinguisher is provided and is placed at the reasonable place.

No smoking sign placed to avoid fire.

First aid (pertolongan cemas)


First aid kit in the office. This will facilitate the lecturers to get it in case of accidents. The adequate tools and medicines in the first aid kit. Adequate medicines are important to give early treatment in case of serious accidents.

Personal Protection Equipment Personal protection equipments is sufficient for students to do work.

Administrative controls (kawalan pentadbiran) Provided bulletin boards bound to facilitate lecturers to put notices. The students also can get the information easily about the workshop. Time table provided to facilitate the teaching and learning process. With timetable, the risk of accidents can be reduced.

The warning sign is placed to warn students who use this workshop

Students do not follow the regulation have been prepared.Students do not wear jacket while doing welding work.

Machine guarding (keselamatan pada mesin)

The machine is been placed at the right place and work is proceeding follow the schedule. This machine can function well.

Electrical safety (keselamatan elektrik) Electrical safety good. Each equipment can cause shock well maintained and cared for.

Emergency switch is provided to enable the lecturers turn off all the switches that are available in the workshop if there is an accident caused by electric shock.

Housekeeping (pengemasan) Equipment that is not used stacked neatly in the space provided

Material disposal site provided by type of material. This is to facilitate the process of gathering material to be moved to the right.

Cleaning equipment for well structured work

Training (bagi latihan) Training given to the students before any work is done. How to use equipment and materials properly presented by instructors who are assigned. Monitoring done by the instructors correct manner as well as to avoid the occurrence of an accident. Planning (merancang) Involves devising systematic process of attaining the

goals of the organisation of the workshop.

Organizing ( pengurusan) Make sure that all activities and resources reached the target and follow what had planned. Make sure that effectiveness of the planned activities can help to achieve the goal.

Lecturers

Directing Involves cooperation from all sides and students. The authorities provide instruction and motivate students to ensure that the planned reach target. The authorities also as person that in charge to dividing the task, helping staff and students to perform tasks and provide information related to assigned tasks.

Controlling Cost of materials- managed by the admin. The budget will be divided to all the workshop there. The budget was provided by government. The material was purchased once a year. So the admin must be making sure that the material is enough to be used by student for 2 semesters. This ways will help to save the cost because buy in the large quantity.

Maintenance and minor service was done by supervisor once a weak to make sure the breakdown doesnt happen. For major service, it will be handling by contractor. The workshop will be lock at the end of class and the key was hold by lecturer and supervisor only. This will make sure that the workshop is safe from robbery and avoid anybody from enter the workshop without permission.

HAZARDS IN WELDING WORKSHOP AND WAYS TO IMPROVE

The

box is prepared to the recyclable materials such as electrodes and steel but the students throw the rubbish inside there.

Student not follow the rule because they need to wear leather jacket when did the welding

The location of this machine is not at the right place.

The sink was dirty and not been cleaned well. The house keeping consideration was bad.

Ways to improve. There are several ways to improve this workshop: Give the instructional to the student about how to throw the rubbish correctly. Make sure the students know where the dustbin to throw the recyclable materials is and where is the dustbin to throw their rubbish. The students must be told to wear the leather jacket. It is important to make sure that they consider about their safety when they welding. The machine must be placed at the right placed so that the students can easily find it and also to make sure it does not disturb the movement of the students in the workshop. The students also must take about the housekeeping consideration when they are in the workshop.
