Kenya Political System

Kenya is located in East Africa with a population of 36 million people. It was a British colony from the early 1900s until gaining independence in 1963. Jomo Kenyatta became the first president and ruled until 1978 when Daniel arap Moi took power and established a one-party system, ruling until 2002. Kenya has a parliamentary system of government with executive, judicial, and legislative branches. The 2007 elections saw violence after both main candidates claimed victory, leading to a power sharing agreement and expanded cabinet. A 2010 referendum supported constitutional reforms to reduce presidential power and create a senate. Key issues Kenya faces include unemployment, poverty, and managing political transitions.
