This document provides an overview of word processing as a tool. It discusses the basic functions of word processing like creation, editing, formatting, storing, retrieving and printing documents. It also explains how word processing works using features like the insertion point, scrolling, word wrap, menus and buttons. The document then covers various word processing features such as formatting, tabs and indentation, justification, fonts, squeezing/stretching documents, and printing envelopes. It concludes by discussing the benefits of using word processors for teaching and learning materials.

Word Processing as a Tool The ability to create documents using a word processor. Allow users to create & manipulate documents containing mostly text. The creating, editing, formatting, storing, retrieving & printing of a text document. A text document is any text that can be keyed in. E.g: memos, letters, reports E.g: Microsoft Word, Corel Word Perfect

Creation--- the original composing & keying in of the document. Editing--- making changes. Formatting--- adjusting the appearance. Storing--- saving it on the disk so that it can be assessed on demand. Retrieving--- bringing the stored document from disk back into computer memory. Printing--- producing the document on paper.

How word processing works?

The insertion point/ cursors, usually a blinking dash/ line/ rectangle, shows where the next character will appear on the screen after typing. Scrolling--- the process of moving different portions of the document on the screen into view. No need to worry about the right side. Word wrap automatically starts a word on the next line if does not fit on the previous line. Easy corrections--- use the Backspace key to delete characters to the left/ the Delete key to delete the characters under the cursors.

Menus & Buttons as commands - Menus --- a set of choices normally laid out across the top of the screen. - Pull- down Menus --- reveals lower- level submenus that pull- down like a window shade. - Toolbar --- a collection of buttons, shown across the top of the screen just below the pull- down menus.

Word Processing Features

Formatting Format- the physical appearance of the document - Vertical centering- adjust the tops & bottom margins so that the text is centered vertically on the printed page. - Line centering- any line can be individually centered between the left & the right margins of the page. - Margins- settings, called default settings. When the margins settings are changed, this software automatically adjusts the texts to fit the new margins.

i) ii)

Tabs & Identation- to begin a paragraph. Justification- the evenness of text at the side margins. Fully justified: has an even margin down each side. Ragged- right text: uneven appearance of the unjustified right side. Line spacing Bold, Italic & Underlining Fonts- a set of characters- letters, punctuation, numbers- of the same design.

Squeezing/ Stretching a document - Adjust the margins, both sides & top & bottom, making them larger to stretch the number of pages/ smaller to reduce the number. - Try different line spacing. - Experiment with fonts.

Printing Envelops - Find the Envelop command on pull- down menus. - Type in the recipients address. There is also space to type the return address.

Documents can be easily edited & updated, reflecting feedback & developing ideas about teaching & learning. Gives a professional & clearly legible appearance to teaching & learning materials. If distributes & viewed using a computer, documents can also include multimedia files such as colour photos, audio & video clips.

Modern word- processes enable saving a document as a Web page, ready to publish on a Web site. Can print directly from PC to OHP transparencies. (OHTs) Can produce documents that use colour, various of fonts and other features. Documents can include tables, diagrams, pictures, charts & equations.

Definition
Allows the presenter to bring together and present a variety of special effects and features. Presentation graphics program are excellent for creating on screen shows.

Why use Electronic Presentation?

It can give visual explanation of what you are trying to say. It can be used to reinforce important information.

It can be used to link complex ideas- themes, build up diagrams.

It can be used to summarise information. It can be used to give further definition of information.

Power Point
Meeting Power Point Creating slides Making changes Adding images and chart Adding motion Adding sound Timing & rehearsing Taking with you

AppleWorks
The presentation feature of AppleWorks allow the users to develop a slide show (presentation), which can include pictures, clip art, sound and movies. The presentation can be set to run on a mouse click or to auto- advance and play continuously.

Photo Story
Photo Story is a free program that allow you to create stunning multimedia presentations from digital photographs. You can add great effects such as zooming into a photo or scanning across a scene. Transitions between pictures can be added as text and special colour and texture effects. You can add music to your presentation either from an existing source or better still, make your own from within the program.

WHAT IS ELECTRONIC SHEET SOFTWARE?

A computer application that simulates a paper worksheet. It displays multiple cells that together make up a grid consisting of rows and columns

Contain a formula that defines how the contents of that cell is to be calculated

WHAT IS DATABASE?

A set of related files that is created and managed by a database management system (DBMS) including

text, images, sound and video.

Database and file structures are always determined by the software. A computer database relies upon software to organize the storage of data.

Summarizing

Is a collection of information or object which is used to arrange numbers and fact. The information are related with some objective or matters.

The Database

Types of database
There are 4 types of database :
Hierarchical

database

Network database
Relational database Object database

Hierarchical database
Database organization method that is structured in a
hierarchy. All access to data starts at the top of the hierarchy and moves downward; for example, from customer to orders.

Network database
1) A database that runs in a network. It implies that the DBMS

was designed with a client/server architecture.

(2) A database that holds addresses of other users in the network.

(3) A database organization method that allows for data relationships in a net-like form. A single data element can point to multiple data elements and can itself be pointed to by other data elements.

Relational database
A database that maintains a set of separate,
related files (tables), but combines data elements from the files for queries and reports when

required. The concept was developed in 1970 by

Edgar Codd, whose objective was to accommodate a user's ad hoc request for selected data.

Object database
A database that is managed by an object-oriented

database management system (ODBMS). Object

databases are closely aligned with a particular object-oriented programming language and enable the data in the objects to be persistently stored without requiring conversion to a relational

database. A fair amount of tedious code is

eliminated, and the object data are stored much faster.

FEATURES OF MICROSOFT ACCESS

As a database software related RDBMS (Relational Database Management System). It stored information and get it through connection

or communication which is set up by user.

And let the objects work without programming.

Example : MsAccess automatically opened when the form is opened by clicking a button to print or opened another file.

Module

Ms Access provide programming database language which is Access Basic. User can use it by typing with using Access Basic to do complex work which do not provide in the macro.

IMPORTANCE OF DATABASE IN TEACHING AND LEARNING

To make question for examination. To store student data. To make form.
