Designing an Effective Listening Area

1. 2. A listening centre is one Important way to encourage and enhance listening skills. Material and criteria to consider in establishing the listening centre: a. Provide a tape recorder or a CD player with multiple headphones. b. Provide a variety of stories, activity tapes, finger plays, music, and listening games. c. Provide comfortable listening places such as beanbag chairs or pillows. d. Label tapes and CDs so that children can easily locate them. e. Encourage active listening. f. Keep tapes and props stored together in a plastic bag or basket. g. Provide blank tapes for each child so they can record their own stories or create stories to go with their pictures.

Special Considerations for infants and toddlers


1. The environment needs to provide comfortable and cosy places for interacting. 2. Places for toddles to read on their own. 3. A low canopy or childrens tent.

4. A small swimming pool or fishing boat with a sheepskin rug or pillows.

Teachers Facilitation of Learning in the Literacy Center


1. To assist children to meet their potential. 2. To establishing an environment that value childrens language. 3. To allow children to use literacy in authentic ways.

Provide Opportunities for Children to Gain Background Knowledge


1. The adult's responsibility to provide rich environment and experiences. 2. To increase vocabulary and background knowledge.

Expand Childrens Language


1. Increase childrens vocabulary acquisition by adding information to what the child has said.

Intentionality Use Rich Language and New Vocabulary Words


1. Children need multiple opportunities to hear a new word used in context before they learn it. 2. Teacher need to be intentional and preplan new vocabulary words they want to use with children.

Model Active Listening


1. Teacher must provide the needed time to listen to children. 2. Give the child your full attention. 3. Making appropriate eye contact. 4. Not interrupting or changing the subject. 5. Giving verbal and nonverbal feedback. 6. Showing our understanding by reflecting what the child has said. 7. Asking open-ended relevant questions.

Ask Appropriate, Open-Ended Question


1. Increase childrens language. 2. Tend to increase dialogue, and often ask for thoughts, opinions, or feeling. 3. Important to actively listen to childrens responses.

Support Peer Interactions and Discussions


1. Encouraging buddy reading. 2. Placing two or three chairs at the computer. 3. Encouraging activities that children coproduce.

Read Books to Children


1. Reading aloud to children. 2. Allow an intimacy between the children and teacher. 3. Interactive ways to read books to children :
Interactive reading before read the book. Make discussion after reading the book. Teachers need to scaffold childrens literacy learning as they read. Story times needs to be a pleasurable experiences. Teachers should pre-read books they plan to read, read the book with expression, set the stage, and show enjoyment.

Develop Interest in Books


1. Providing an engaging, enticing literacy centre. 2. The book has an interesting story.

Convert Words to Text


1. Creating class experience stories. 2. Putting childrens favorite songs finger plays into writing. 3. Writing down childrens individually dictated sentence and stories. 4. Record and then transcribe childrens oral storytelling.

Model the Use of Reading Writing and Storytelling Props


Verbally state what we are modeling. The use of props also need to be modeled.

Offer Individual and Group Instruction for Reading and Writing


Teacher should showed child what to do first. Teacher should also be a model for making the work. Teacher should show the correct way to do the job.

Meet the Needs of All Learners


1. Providing a wide range of developmentally appropriate, interesting, reading, writing, manipulative, and oral language materials and activities.
