UMTS Network: Universal Mobile Telecommunications System

UMTS is a 3G mobile technology that uses W-CDMA and allows for multimedia access on phones. It uses a network architecture with Node B base stations, radio network controllers (RNC), and circuit or packet switching. UMTS enables various applications like voice, video, and data and provides different quality of service classes. Speeds can reach 384 kbps at long range or 2 Mbps at short range.

UMTS Problems
Requires more battery power Can handoff UMTS to GSM, but not GSM to UMTS Initial poor coverage For video on demand and other bandwidth heavy services a Base Station needs to be set up every 11.5km. Unfeasible in rural areas.
