I3nformal Hearing Test

The document describes several screening procedures and tests used to identify hearing loss in children: 1) Informal hearing tests measure a child's ability to hear and respond to questions from increasing distances. Difficulty hearing at 10-20 feet may indicate hearing loss. 2) Coin click and noisemaker tests assess a child's ability to detect different frequency sounds at varying distances, with shorter detection distances suggesting more severe hearing loss. 3) Psychological tests like the Weschler Intelligence Scale and Purdue Non-Language Test measure general mental ability using visual puzzles and shapes, while the Philippine Non-Verbal Intelligence Test uses familiar Philippine illustrations. These help identify other potential factors.

Screening Procedures

Informal Hearing Test

Conversational Live-Voice Test

1. Place the child 15-20 feet away from the

examiner.
2. The examiner asks simple questions
moving closer and closer until the child can
give the answer.
3. If the child has difficulty in hearing at 10-20
feet, he is a suspect of having hearing loss
and should be referred for further
evaluation.
Coin Click Test
1. Place the child 2-5 feet away with his back
facing the examiner.
2. The examiner tosses a two-peso coin and
asks the child to raise his right hand every
time he hears the clicking of the coin.
3. If he hears the coin ring as it strikes the
hard surface, his high frequency hearing
acuity is normal.
4. If he hears only a thud, he is presumed to
have high frequency hearing loss.
Noisemakers Test
a drum for low frequency
a medium-sized bell for middle
frequency
a whistle for high frequency
1. Mark off the room in one foot space
intervals from the child.
2. Keep the child busy with toys in one
corner or in the middle of the room.
3. While the child is busy, make the sound of
each noisemaker at the marked points.
4. Indicate the nearest point at which the child
responds.

The principle is, the shorter the distance

between the source of sound and the child,
the more severe the hearing loss is.
