common characteristics possessed by the
individual members.

For example : during the population

family various other statistical information
on different characteristics e.g.
sex,age,geographical location etc. of all
people in the country are collected. The
total population is then classified
according to these characteristics.
Types of Classification

classified on the following four
basis:-
1)On qualitative basis.
2)On quantitative basis.
3)On time basis.
4)On geographical basis.
1) On qualitative basis.
Classification of total population of the country
on the basis of sex, religion etc. belongs to this
type.
For Example:- Classification on the basis of sex

Total Population Population in number

of India in 2001

Persons 1,028,737,436

Males 532,223,090

Females 496,514,346
For Example:-Classification on the basis of religion:

Buddhists 7,955,207 0.8
Jains 4,225,053 0.4
Other Religions & 6,639,626 0.6
Persuasions

Religion not stated 727,588 0.1

Total * 1,028,610,328
2) On quantitative
basis :-
Classification of total population
of the country on the basis of
age, income etc. belong to this
type.
For Example :- Classification of total
population of India on the basic of
the age.
Age Groups Persons
6 years and below 163,819,614
Proportion to total population 15.9
(%)
7 - 14 years 199,791,198
Proportion to total population 19.4
(%)
15 - 59 years 585,638,723
Proportion to total population 56.9
(%)
60 years and above 76,622,321
Proportion to total population 7.5
(%)
Age Not Stated 2,738,472
Proportion to total population 0.3
(%)
3) On time basis.

Classification of total population

of the country on the basis of
time belong to this type.
For example: Population of India
from 1901
Year Total

1971 548,159,652
1981 683,329,097
1991 846,302,688
2001* 1,028,737,436
4) On geographical basis
Classification of total population
of the country on the basis of
geographical region belongs to
this type.
For Example:- The total population
of a country is classified by States.
